This video is so true! I lived in Rochester, NY, for 12 years ending in January '96 when I left Rochester forever and relocated to Miami, FL. The move was the best thing I ever did until I immigrated to the UK in September '98.

Rochester is unfortunately a textbook example of a city that went to hell; I know, I lived there 30 years. The only thing left is the "attitude" of old Rochesterians!

this makes me so sad brought a tear to my eye. I was raised in the 80 went to midtown EVERY Christmas so see Santa at Magic Mountain! LOVED downtown! Went to Visit my grandma on Emerson St. until she moved out in the end of the 80's I lived on flower City Park until 86 . Now I wouldn't drive to Emerson for nothing...

ufohead, I recall Rochester pre-NAFTA, when everything from cameras to pianos were manufactured there. In the 60s, my dad owned the barber shop in Midtown Plaza. I recall Midtown always busy with middle-class shoppers having plenty money to burn. Today, Rochester's manufacturing base has been destroyed by cheap overseas imports. Wanna put Rochester back on the right track? Re-institute stiff trade tariffs on imported goods and let's get back to work.

I was raised in Henrietta, and will say that must people in the suburbs consider the city a cesspool. Go to any Rustbelt city and you get the same story..the city itself is horrible but the suburbs are livable. It's sad to see that part of the country go downhill, but what else can you say given how the State government operates?

I lived there twenty five years ago .I really wanted to move back after I retire in 2026 but the property taxes are very very high. My home I own now is currently worth 300,000 and my property taxes are 120 a month but to purchase a similar home in rochester the property taxes are 700 a month .That is to rich for my blood .I looked into why the property taxes are so high and it would be half of that if it weren't for the high concentration of people on Medicare there . It turns out all those people who are gaming the system by claiming permanent disability when in fact they are able to work the property owners have to pay a higher property tax to pay for the con men and con women's free healthcare. I know so many people there gaming the system but I will not be back to pay for their healthcare. Good luck to all the homeowners who are paying those high property taxes so that all those lazy people can con the system.

You're not missing anything. I moved from there, to SC, last year. Upstate cities, save Albany, have all met the same fate, generally. Rochester fell victim to state laws/regulations, high taxes, high cost of doing business, and a general decline of local manufacturing, which employed over 300K people, in 1980. Kodak employed 60K, in '83, now they have around 9K, or so. The city has seen better days. Not much new industry has come along, to replace what's been lost.

2009 was the 3rd best year on output in human history for a single country. The other 2 years were 2006 and 2007. Our consumption is what is out of control. Employment in manufacturing jobs has been in decline sense the 70s. That is due to automation and it is a good thing. We need more farmers and we need to stop "buying" so many imports. Thats it. Our manufacturing sector could enter the 3rd industrial revolution if it was unleashed into the free market, but its still very healthy as is.

nackeria, hmmm... I fully admit I derived/developed those particular skills at nearly every store in Midtown Plaza, circa 1965. Such a daily task was easy for me. Dad owned the "No Waiting Barber Shop" at Midtown's terrace level, so I was always wearing my BIG pocketed shoe-shine smock when roaming McCurdy's, Forman's, Sibley's. After I conducted my daily deeds, I didn't have to run down the usual exits like a common thief. PEACE

I read a lot of the comments and I can tell who knows what they are talking about and who doesnt. First of all Both Rochester and Buffalo have neighborhoods that rate as the most dangerous in the state as well as the country. They both have the same problems and are almost the same city except Buffalo is just bigger. I have always called it western new york. Not Upstate. And as far as NYC it was bad, now its generally safe with pockets of bad areas. Upstate cities need to unite.

First of all, unless that kid was hanging out on Ave D (all you true Rochesterians know exactly where I am talking about), he was not involved in a drive by shooting. As every city, there are bad parts of Rochester. Yes, our "thugs" seem to think they are the toughest, but as long as you dont piss them off or walk down any dark allies alone (which no smart person would do anywhere), you wont get mugged (like his "smart" friends supposedly did). Though I cant wait to move. I do love Rochester.
