Phil Harris as Patou, a Basset Hound who is a good friend to both Chanticleer and Edmond, and plays the narrator character of the story. He despises the Grand Duke and is dedicated to Edmond's cause to bring Chanticleer back home. He is brave and reasonable, but somewhat temperamental. His endeavour to find Chanticleer is hampered by the fact that he does not know how to tie his shoes ( which he wears because of bunions). However, in the end, he finally figures out how to tie them right, after Edmond teaches him. This would be Harris's final acting role; he died four years after its release, aged 91.

Glen Campbell as Chanticleer, a rooster who lives on the farm with many other animals, who are fond of and love him. When the sun rises without is crowing, his friends, believing he was lying to them about his crowing bringing up the sun (a fact that he himself thought was true), reject him, leading to the adventures of Edmond and the others. In a miserable state, he goes to the city and becomes a popular singer. Through his manager Pinky, he meets Goldie and falls in love at first sight with her. Soon though, his friends come to the city and apologize. He and Goldie are then brought back to the farm, so he can save it. He is also based on the superstar Elvis Presley.

Charles Nelson Reilly as Hunch, the Duke's pygmy nephew and lead henchman. Hunch enjoys rhyming words with "aggravation" and humming "The Ride of the Valkyries". He is dimwitted, but extremely aggressive. He carries an all-purpose Swiss Army Knife in a lidless soda can strapped to his back and uses its various bladed objects (such as a flyswatter) as weapons. A small running gag in the film was whenever the Duke would breathe on him, his magic would transform Hunch into a randomly different creature. In the end, Hunch gets the upper hand, and chases his uncle away with his flyswatter.

Toby Scott Ganger as Edmond, the son of a human farmer who is being read the story of Chanticleer by his mother, Dory. He is transformed into a kitten by the Grand Duke as punishment for trying to summon back Chanticleer, and is the one who organises the farm animals to bring Chanticleer back to the farm after the flooding starts. He slowly begins to learn the errors of his ways and stops being afraid

Man, I haven't watched this movie in so long that I actually didn't remember it when I first saw a picture of the rooster on KZbin. It rang a bell, making me wonder "Where have I seen this before?" After this trailer, a lot of it came rushing back to me. It's times like this I realize how old I am now, compared to when Don Bluth style films were a big part of my childhood. I'm still young, mind you, but these memories hit home on how fast time flies. Hard to believe there were days when Land Before Time, American Tail, Pebble & the Penguin, Secret of NIMH, All Dogs go to Heaven and those many other classics were all new to me.

Sorrell Booke as Pinky, a fox who favours golf. His job is to ensure that Chanticleer never feels the compulsion to return home by convincing him that his friends hate him, making it easy to profit off of Chanticleer's singing skills. He secretly works for the Duke and lies to Goldie about Edmond being a "bad kitty". Chanticleer and Goldie, who have fallen in love with each other, escape with Edmond's friends, foiling Pinky's plans and destroying his limousine simultaneously. This was Booke's final film role.

Sandy Duncan as Peepers, a mouse. Because of this, she is initially terrified of Edmond, but he tries to convince everyone that he used to be a boy. She was willing to accept him for being a cat if he took her and the others to the city. It is not until the very end of the film that she believes him and comments "oh, he was a handsome little boy..." She has a lisp and very round glasses, and is constantly arguing with Snipe's chauvinistic views.

I remember watching this as a kid. I liked it for several things. As a kid there was a decent amount of suspense and honestly the Grand Duke was a pretty fun villain. I also felt it had a fairly powerful message against bullying and making fun of your friends (I occasionally got bullied as a kid so I could relate). You never know when you may regret doing something like that in the future.

Eddie Deezen as Snipes, a magpie. He, Edmond, Patou, and Peepers travel to the city in a toybox floating on the floodwaters, with Snipes more interested in exploring the city and its sights then actually helping his friends. Being claustrophobic, this poses a problem when he pokes holes in the box trying to escape and reach open air. He despises garbage and dirt, but loves the food served in the city when they go inside a restaurant where Chanticleer sings, particularly lasagna.

Ellen Greene as Goldie, a pheasant and singer who is in Pinky's employment. She is initially jealous of Chanticleer for stealing her spotlight, but falls in love with him upon becoming more acquainted with him. Pinky initially tells her that Edmond is a bad kitty, but when Pinky has Edmond and his friends tied up, she realizes that they are actually Chanticleer's friends, and tells Chanticleer that they tried to get a message to him. Atfer this, Chanticleer manages to escape the set of Pinky's new movie, and returns to the farm with his friends, Edmond, and Goldie. Goldie stays with Chanticleer on the farm, and they presumably get married at the end.

Christopher Plummer as the Grand Duke of Owls, a magical owl who despises Chanticleer. He overhears Edmond's call for Chanticleer in the real world and transforms him into a kitten as punishment, planning to eat him. The Duke hates his nephew Hunch and threatens several times to kill him if he fails to annihilate Chanticleer's friends. The Duke is a malevolent powerful creature of the night, with a penchant for eating smaller animals as meals and commanding other villainous owls to do his bidding. He hates sunlight, like all owls, and recoils when light shines on him. Also, he possesses magical breath that can transform anyone into any creature, as exampled when he turns Edmond into his kitten form. He is chased away by Hunch near the very end of the film atfer being shrunken to a size smaller than that of Hunch and the mice and chicks on the farm, driving the both of them far away from Chanticleer's farm. In a deleted scene of the film, he nearly eats a skunk that he has stuffed (live) into a pie, but thanks to Hunch's clumsiness, the skunk escapes. In the final version of that scene, however, it is unknown what kind of pie the Duke is baking.

Some people love this film. some hate it. I love it. It's a Don Bluth Film afterall, I love all of them, even his..."not so good ones", but then, this is Don Bluth we are talking here, Anything is going to Pale and badly when compared to "All Dogs Go To Heaven" (his best IMO), "An American Tail", the "Land Before Time 1", "Anastasia", etc, even his "off day" movies ("Rock a Doodle", "Thumbelina", etc) are Fantastic movies in their own right with Gorgeous Animation, Great Voice Acting (this trailer shows some with Christopher Plummer showing, once again, why He plays so many Badguy's...he , like Jeremy Irons, Alan Rickman ,and the late great Tony Jay, just has a perfect villain voice!), and Songs that Out Disney, well. Disney!, it's just, compared to when He is Really "on form", you can tell his "off day" movies were made on an "off day". Still, even his "off day" Films are about 1000 Times better than the live action remake tripe that Disney is pumping out now its gone into another Dark Age (lets just say I basically Exploded when I read they are Remaking Pete's Dragon with 1. A CGI Dragon (Elliot was Animated by Don Bluth in the original...probably why hes so gorgeously animated..CGi just is not going to be anywhere near as gorgeous). 2. No Songs and 3 no Jim Dale. )...heres hoping his "Dragon's Lair" movie (please be Hand Drawn, CG would be inferior!) has him Absolutley on Top Form like He was in the 80's so he can, once again, show Disney how to make a Movie!

Whitney Elizabeth Sorry that this post is a bit long. I get rather "involved" with discussions about Animation! Indeed, its rather sad that some people think they are poor films.. because they most certainly are not. They are absolutely Lovely films and genuine Disney-Beaters IMO!! , Especially now Disney, Sadly, seems to have entered another Dark Age :(. Either Live Action Reboots that fail to capture the Magic or the beauty of the Originals, or Dumbed Down, Fart gag filled CGI fluff...Bluth's classics are beating Disney's current stuff hands down in my view! Still, even accepting Disney is in another Dark Age, I Still think "CARS 2" (Disney-Pixar) is a better "James Bond" Movie than the last 3 Daniel Craig ones put together! I can understand that you get frustrated, as these films are your Childhood Treasures, they played a big role in my Childhood too, and it does make me pretty sad and angry when people look down on them. I know I personally use the term "not so good"..when I use it, I am Using it in comparison to Don Bluth's finest movies...even if these are are an "off day" for Bluth, they are still an inculaculable number of times better than what pretty much anyone else makes! it basically shows just how truthful the "Master of Animation" tag the trailers give him actually is, very!. I think some people mostly look Unkindly on "Rock a Doodle" "Thumbelina" and on "Pebble and the Penguin" because, they do pale badly compared to Bluth's finest Movies, this is a shame as, taken on their own regards, they are still absolutely Brilliant films! they have everything a great Disney-Beater (and, as said, I do consider them as such, especially "Thumbelina"!) needs, Great Songs, Gorgeous Animation, and Superb Voice Acting, and they all have those elements in Spade fulls!, they are still exceptional Children's Movies, and by being "Lighter and Softer" and more "Disney-ish" than some of Bluth's older work, they are probably much better films to watch with Younger Children (say, under 6) who might find some of Bluth's older "Darker and Edgier" work a little Too Dark and Scary in Places. Don't get me wrong, I genuinely Adore "Rock A Doodle" (Especially scenes with the "Grand Duke of Owls", Christopher Plummer is just such an Awesome Villain!, that "Rrrrrock Ah-Doodle...PAH!" he delivers here at the end of the trailer is pure Scenery Chewing Villainy at its grin inducing best!!) "Thumbelina" and "Pebble and The Penguin", heck, "Thumbelina" genuinely has me Tearing up more than once in some scenes, like any truly great Family Movie Should! They are all wonderful films!, it's just that some very closed minded, very "stubborn" people have a very definite image of what a "Don Bluth movie" should be (Dark, Scary, Sad, often quite Adult! ("Secret of NIMH "actually got quite Bloody in places don't forget) basically, his Earlier Indipendant work) so his "Lighter" Movies get wailed on by those people as they don't fit that image and that's a shame for those people, as they are missing out on some properly Lovely Films and Genuine "Disney-Beaters" by ignoring his "Lighter" Early Nineties Work! We know how good these movies are though, and have known it since Childhood, so that is all that really Counts :) Movies are Subjective, Personal things, its our own opinions that count the most, not those of the masses. If You Love those Movies and they are your Childhood Treasures, then nothing else Matters. "Anastasia" I have noticed is something of a "Marmite Film", some people (myself included) love it to bits, considering a return to Bluth's 80's form (being Dark, Scary and quite Sad among all the Humor and Songs) others hate it, either for the Liberties it takes with Russian History (it's a Fairy Tale, it doesn't need to be Historically Accurate!), or for the fact it gets pretty Dark at times, Especially with Rasputin being portrayed, basically, as a thundering great Demon! (that one is mostly over-protective parents however), others, they like it, but prefer Don Bluth's other films. Truth is, as much as I Enjoy "Anastasia", I rank it among Bluth's best after all, it only gets watched if it's one of the first of my Don Bluth DVD's I come to, But if "All Dogs Go To Heaven", "An American Tail", "Secret of NIMH" "Thumbelina", and of course, some of the Stuff he did when he was at Disney, Especially the original "The Rescuers" (it really upsets me that people forget about that film, it's an absolute childhood treasure of mine! and yes, even at 28 I still Tear up in the "Someone's Waiting For You" song!) etc comes into my Hand first..Anastasia gets left on the pile.

Simeon Yves it isn't that I have anything against Anastasia. I just have a special place in my heart for the other three. Anastasia is an interesting movie in its own right. Personally, I've only seen the All Dogs movie once (wasn't a huge fan. I'm sorry!) & I've never seen the Secret of Nimh. But compared with Land Before Time (which is fantastic, but I preferred the sequels, which I don't think he had anything to do with) & Troll in Central Park (scary beyond belief to me as a 4 year old), I think these three also deserve a spot in his better films. I know people aren't going to like this, but I honestly enjoy those three movies over All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Whitney Elizabeth I understand, and indeed, Childhood Treasures always hold a very special place in our Hearts, our earliest memories are always the most precious. Indeed, its a very interesting movie, but I can understand why you place the other Movies before it, as I stated, as much as I love Anastasia (its plot really appeals to me, as, with me being a bit of a Romantic, I still beleive she Escaped in Real Life as well), there are many of his Movies I Love even more. To be Fair, its actually pretty easy to have never Seen "The Secret of NIMH" it is very, very rarely shown on TV, and on the Blue Moon it does come on TV, usually on Cable, its most often on pretty late at night! DVD and Blue Ray versions of the Original on its Own are not that easy to find either as most are Bundled with the Godawfull Sequal (I hate it when they do that..), and I dont think it's on any of the PPV services such as Netlfix or Amazon Prime either..though I could be wrong on that last part...theres probably a lot of people out there who have not seen it either! Nope, Done Bluth had no Involvement what so ever in any of the Sequals to "The Land Before Time", He also, IIRC, had no Involvement in any of the Sequals to his other Movies. Which were all produced with neither his imput, nor even his Permission, probably why most of them are not as good as the originals, and some can even be downright Awful IMO,!! With what you pointed out on "A Troll in Central Park" scaring you as a Child, that is actually a very common theme with all of Don Bluth's movies, they, even the "lighter and fluffier" ones, can still be pretty scary, especially for younger children, and some of his "Darker and Edgier" 1980's work actually had to be Toned Down in places from his original Vision to prevent the "Horror and Emotional Elements" resulting in the films getting a "T" Certificate! (MPAA "PG-13" /BBFC "12A" nowadays), which is very high indeed for a "Family Film"..after all, T/PG-13/12-A is most often associated with Superhero Movies and the Lighter Action Films, not Animated Musicals! Most notable for being "dialled back" is actually "The Land Before Time", the main reason that Film is only 69 minuites long was because it had to be cut to ribbons compared to Don Bluths original vision to get it down to the "G" rating Speilberg Wanted..and it is still a very sad and moving film all the same!!, but, thats all to do with His personal view on how to make "Family Films" , and what I think makes Him so brilliant because it means His films don't "talk down" to Children "you can make a Children's film Dark, Scary, and very, very Sad, and very Clever, so long as it's got a Happy Ending, the Kids will take it fine" I wish more companies would remember that!... even Disney of all companies followed it pretty much to the letter for some of its "Renaissance" era Films "Basil: The Great Mouse Detective" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Especially...! Shame so many Family Films seem to insist on really "talking down" to children and being Purile nowadays. You know, I genuinely think, in the same way as it is Impossible to compile a definitive list of "The Best of Disney", it is also impossible to compile a List of "The Best of Don Bluth" as we all have our Childhood Treasures, resulting in us having Films some other viewers maybe didn't find so good, or maybe can't even stand, right up there in our personal "very best" lists, after all, look how many people downright Despise "Pete's Dragon"...for me it's right up there in Disney's best for its an absolute Childhood Treasure of mine... Subjectivity is a pain when it comes to making lists, and you dont get much more Subjective than Entertainment, be it Movies, Games, TV, Theatre, Whatever. What I think makes it truly Impossible to make a Definitive Don Bluth list is, basically, All his Films are utter Masterpieces...and that makes a Definitive list Impossible,it's like trying to chose the best paintings of Van Gough! so, we can only go on our own, personal, subjective lists of what we think are the best Films. Each to their own, as I have often repeated, Movies are subjective, personal things, I know that I personally rank "All Dogs Go To Heaven" as Don Bluth's absolute best film (probably because 1. its just so moving, 2 I love Dogs, and 3. Gosh its just gorgeously animated) but I am not going to hold it against you, or anyone, for not liking it! anyone who does hold it against you, basically, is just being a Selfish Idiot. Movies are Personal, and at the end of the day, our personal opinion is all that really matters to us.

See, I was also a fan of Fievel Goes West and the TV show and I know he had nothing to do with that, as well. I've actually never seen the original American Tale, either. Maybe my opinion really isn't valid for not having seen his other "great" movies, but dark and scary really isn't my thing haha

I'm in a similar boat, I have to read Canterbury Tales again and in one of the stories a woman has a rooster named Chanticleer. The only part of this movie I remember is them chanting that name so I did some googling and found one of my fondest childhood memories.

Oh my goodness! I haven't seen this movie since I was five and I've always had this vague memory of it but no one was able to tell me what "that movie with the giant rooster? I remember a lightning storm?" was....Twenty years later, here it is!
