I just heard a drummer say that, when Bonzo started the drum intro to this, he was riffing on the beginning of Chuck Berry’s song Johnny B Goode. I just relistened to that (it’s been decades for me after all) and it sure is in that rhythm Check it out!

When this album was released I was 15. My bedroom was on the corner of my apartment bldg, so one window on the concourse and one on the ave. I put one speaker in each window and let it rip. Black Dog, Rock n Roll Battle of Evermore and Stairway. People were stopping in the street to listen to this. Over 50 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Zeppelin can do that to you.

I'd argue that JPJ didn't tbf, he's playing a rather straight-forward bassline. I would've loved to see John Entwistle give it a go with his Thunderfingers: he was the original lead bassist

Also, remember that the opener version on ‘The song remains the same’ is, for me, better. Way better. Marginally slower, but opens up space for Page. His duckwalk groove on stage? Wow. Simply wow. His swing and funk? Hell, Plant plays straight into that. And Bonzo and JPJ groove their way thru. What a band.

This song began as a spontaneous jam initiated by Bonham taking out his frustrations on the drums after they had difficulties with another song. Bonzo started bashing the drums and Jimmy Page jumped in with the guitar riff and the next thing you know Plant is belting out the atypical straight forward lyrics of the first verse totally improved. They jammed it for a bit and immediately decided to craft it into a real song.

@pauljones9061 Sorry, but you're incorrect. In the very earliest days of the Stones, Stewart was a genuine member, and he set up their gigs because he was the only person with regular access to a telephone (through his day job). It was Stewart that transported the band to and from their live shows. When Andrew Oldham became their manager, he told the group that Stewart didn't fit the visual image he thought best for the band; he would however continue to coordinate their itinerary and play piano in studio. He was never a member of the Faces. Their keyboardist was Ian McLagan. Faces guitarist Ron Wood joined the Stones in the mid 70's and is still a member. Sadly, Ian Stewart died suddenly at 47 in 1985. He still sometimes worked with the Stones.

Ahhh, the memories. I was the bassist & lead singer in a R&R cover band in the 70's & we did this song last every night. The reason was that we did it in the original key and it would blow my voice doing the Plant imitation. Some nights I would literally feel dizzy singing it & could barely talk afterwards. Years later I saw Plant do it live and he vocally dropped it down an octave on the higher levels. I just kicked myself mentally for not thinking of that but I thought it was cheating.

Led Zeppelin didn't do singles as they didn't want to be bound by the constraints and expectations of singles. They relied on touring/live performance, word of mouth and album sales. Their record company did eventually release some tracks as singles in the US but not in the UK. Their reputation was already made before singles releases though.

Great analysis as always, thanks guys! Great song, awesome band! 56 now, been a Led Head since I was 8. It was the 1st song I learned on guitar because the guy teaching me didn’t know Whole Lotta Love yet. I was patient and eventually learned more. What a great time that was. We recently had to put my dog down. He was a black lab named Zeppelin. He used to sit with me for hours listening to this music, a true fan. I will never forget him, miss him every day. R.I.P. Best rock album for many, and certainly one of Zeppelin's best songs and that is saying something! From the same album try deep cut Four Sticks, often ignored by reactors but well worth a listen. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

@@loosilu very cool atmosphere at that time!! They played in New Orleans a few times so they were probably there for a concert. They also made the pilgrimage to the famous “Crossroads” in Mississippi where the blues were born so they may have stopped by NOLA while they were down south.

Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. He responded with “I don’t know, you will have to ask Rory Gallagher". A fellow Irishman who died tragically young. Check him out if you want to,

This is 1972 hard rock blended with 1950s early rock and roll, even rockabilly, which is intentional and nostalgic, because "it's been a long time since I rock and rolled". You hear it in the repeated guitar riff. That's from Jimmy Page's early days, 13 years old, when his first band was playing skiffle on British TV and listening to Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode on the radio.
