#90s #ClassicRock #Story
Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 90s vinyl songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community.
If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
It’s time for another episode of our series revelations where featured artists go deep on their biggest hits.
1990 was a transitional year in music. We’ve talked about it before, the 80s had ended but even though we were in a new decade, things hadn’t really changed. It would be a good year or more before Nirvana completely chanted the landscape with Nevermind. and the charts were all over the place as New Jack Swing was in full effect, as well as Dance records, With College Rock knocking on the door and Hip Hop mixing it up. Glam Metal was still in heavy rotation while pop was going the route of Mariah Carey and Abdul, In the middle of all of this a band of brothers were readying their debut album for release.
Mathew and Gunnar Nelson, the sons of the late Rock Pioneer Ricky Nelson, or Rick and the grandsons of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson would become the first and only act in the history of rock and roll to chart a third generation #1 hit with the rock ballad Love and Affection. Not even the Jacksons have done that, although, it could still happen. as Janet and Michael have offspring but I digress. Mathew and Gunnar’s debut album had three top 15 hits
After Love and Affection hit #1 on the hot 100 and #20 on the rock charts, the songs After the Rain went to #6 and More Than Ever went to #14 They even had a fourth hit form the record, Only Time Twill Tell that went to #28. Not many albums that year had four top 30 hits outside of the Janet’s and Mariah's. What follows is a recent zoom session that I did with both Mathew and Gunnar live from their studio in Nashville where they take us through the creation of the aforementioned #1 hit Love and Affection with hands on acoustic song telling, as well as some insight about their late father Rick Nelson and you’ll find as I did that the Nelson are two of the nicest guys in the business. I remember the first time I read this song, I loved the harmony’s, Ear candy for sure, As we go into this interview I want to thank our sponsor Zennie Eyewear, who support our mission of keeping the music alive. I’m wearing a new pair today, I customized them, I chose the color shape and style, I added a pari of sunglasses and put and have blokz on them that protect me from digital blue light. I love them. Go to Zenni.com and give it a whirl. You’ll dig it and for less than the price of a vinyl record. Here’s Mathew and Gunnar with the story of Love and Affection.

@@ProfessorofRock and Thank you for putting out the great content. My sentiment here has applied to other artists you’ve covered. Often at the surface I’m like eh Do I really care that much about this song / artist...? But in part because of my own love of music all around & in no small part your own passion for the art, it gives you the insight to ask the right kind of questions and or just have a nice dialogue flow that elicits the subject to share details or connections that transcend the specific initial topic and are just, very interesting & compelling. Wrote a couple great songs with them. Talented guys who can still deliver live to this day! Their ongoing story is so good. Matt gave me such a great memory cuz the first time we wrote at his place in Studio City, I told him that his dad's Garden Party was one of the first songs I learned how to play, front to back. He handed me a guitar and said, "Play a little.." as he sang harmony to my vs and chorus of Garden Party.. Then, as I handed the guitar back, he said, "That's the guitar it was written on!" Goosebumps.:))

I'm so surprised. I know these guys. We've been friends for over 20 years now. I'm glad you had Matt and Gun Nelson on your show. Their music is so much more than those "long haired blonde guys". Their music is uniquely their own sound. They are so great to their fans. I have seen them stay after a show for hours to make sure all their fans got their autographs and photos taken with them. Not too many people do that these days. They are always so up beat and happy most of the time. Matt has a son named Ozzie. So now there is a 4th generation to pick up the family music and run with it. Thanks again for having them on your show. Stay safe and take care.

The first time I heard the song "Love & Affection" it grabbed me. The guitar intro and the "Here she comes" blend of Gunnar and Matthew's voices just blew me away. I didn't know who the song was by at the time. I just thought it was a terrific song. When I found out who it was by I went right out and bought the CD "After The Rain". I can say that it was probably my favorite CD put out that year as nearly every song was stellar, especially L&A, the title track and "Only Time Will Tell". I remember first seeing them on SNL shortly after their dad passed away. I'm 10 years older than they are and I was a fan of the Ozzie & Harriet Show and an even bigger fan of their dad when I was young and I was very upset when their dad died. Thank you for this wonderful interview that shows how these two talented men took all of the things that life gave to them, good and bad, and turned those experiences into well-lived lives. They could have become jaded and bitter but they are positive, intelligent, hard- working, down-to-earth and extremely nice men. Nothing was "given" to them. They have earned their successes.

When it first came out, I used to get crap from my metalhead friends for liking this song. They were always saying, "Why do you like that girly assed song?" Being a musician myself at the time and a member of the high school jazz band, I was picking up on the nuances that they talked about in the video. In response to their silly ribbing, I would slow the song down (thank God my step-father had a stereo that let me do that) and say "listen to this shift change," "Listen to how they vocally harmonize this part," or "Listen to the note progression here." Slowly, they would start to hear what I already heard in the song and came to appreciate the musical talent on display here, even though they pretty much still thought it was a song to make the girls happy. It really is a great song that hasn't always gotten the credit it deserves.

That is saying something and this interview is still telling it. I'm so greatful for this show and the memories. God!! This takes me back. I graduated back in 1991. Live and Affection was a fresh breath of air. I was raised on so much music that its insane. From the 50s thru at that time back in the day. I grew up as a teen for most of the 80s. So of course I loved mostly the LA rock scene. Nelson gave a heart to music with several different layers and harmonies. My younger sister Amy and I both got the tape. I remember mixing it in with bands like Def Leppard, RATT and so on. 1990 I remember music was all over the place. My mom Connie recognized the boys right off and made the connection with there dad and grandparents. They came from such a rich lineage. There music couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I actually lost my virginity in 1991 a week before my 19th bday going through firefighter school in Illinois while I was in the Air Force. Ill never forget that. Thank you Sharon from rocket school. Never shared that memory before. So, thanks to the Nelson twins for resurrecting an old memory. Leaning back in a chair at home at 625am with a smile now. Thank you for sharing the interview and may the Nelson boys keep rockin. This married man has an awesome wife of 14 years that needs to get out and go make money now. Greetings from Oregon!! 3 chords and keep it honest.

At 14 there was NOTHING I liked about these guys - the hair/clothes/love songs - just cheese - not even sure why I watched this episode - but after listening to them talk I have so much respect for their struggles and path they’ve taken in life. They seem to have genuine positive personalities. If I saw them in person I’d want to buy them a round of beers.

In the month before the After the Rain CD was released I had a LOT of "young adult tragedy": got dumped, massive paycut, walked away from a record deal memo, DJ job fell through, car broke down, etc. Bought the CD because Love and Affection was awesome, but the lyrics of that album hit me where I was. It was one of the CDs that really helped me get through. Fast forward to last year. We see (and sometimes meet) celebs here in the TN town I live in all the time. I don't usually care. My wife saw the the brothers when we walked in a store while knicknack shopping and said "They look famous." (lol) While Gunnar was busy with the sales clerk, I approached and said "Thank you" to Matthew for that first album. He was gracious, friendly, and had a genuine response. May be the nicest celebs I've met out here, and most of them have been very nice.

I was SOOO excited when I saw you were interviewing Nelson! Back in the early 90's when they were touring on this album, I got to see them in concert as they actually came to the town where I was living in our remote part of the US (which I have always referred to as the Outer Rim Territory). I got tickets for me and my younger sister who was also a super-crazy fan of theirs. It was her first rock concert. What an amazing show! We screamed our head off. These guys are amazing musicians and entertainers. Such a treasured memory for me with my sister now, as she has since passed away from cancer in 2007. We also liked their music when they were in the band Power Tool (they had a song on the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure soundtrack "Two Heads Are Better Than One"). These guys are really cool human beings!

What an awesome interview Adam! Thanks for getting Nelson on your program, I too fell in love with this song the first time I listened to it , the whole record is really good. They are such humble, everyday guys in personality and complete musicians on the stage and in the studio. Interesting that Ozzie was also with a #1 hit too. I liked these guys at 15, when it was really uncool to especially for a guy lol 😆. Thanks Professor for arranging this awesome interview, absolutely love what you are doing here, keep it going, you and me coulda been brothers lol we share the time frame of life and we both love many styles of music 🎶, that's just kick ass!!

I have to say I wasn't a fan at the time, but I love this interview. In part because of the actual story behind it. I was a psychology major at the time and was always being asked to help women in bad relationships, but I was always in the friend zone. I was actually told I said all the right things, but... But Adam is right that it all works out because this June 1st I celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary. I'm going to have to give this song another listen in light of this interview, so thanks!

I loved watching "Ozzie and Harriet" as a kid, and couldn't wait until the final minutes of the show to see if Ricky would sing a song...loved seeing those slow-blinking eyes as he sang! lol I was fortunate to see him with the Stone Canyon Band at Knott's Berry Farm's John Wayne Theatre back in the day. My brother was crazy about Tom Brumley (on pedal steel), and I was there for the whole musical experience (still watching for those slow-blinking eyes, of course...lol). This was a wonderful interview, where I learned so much about the twins and their musical maturation and evolution. Thank you so much, all of you, for sharing it all with us! 🧡

I didn't know of this group or this song, when I was a kid in the 80's I shunned the music because my sister had control of the radio and I was into classical music. But I love this interview, these guys, all of them here, and since about twenty years ago, I've been playing catch up, and still haven't caught up. I apologize for dissing 80's music, and early 90's. This is one of the most well written and arranged and played fantastic by guys who are incredibly talent. Its great knowing that they started writing and playing so young. All of the musical parts individually are not easy to play and are unique yet are mixed together perfectly. The harmonies are some of the best ever in rock on par with the Eagles. Its a song you want to play again after you hear it. It stays on your mind and probably ends up on your playlist immediately
