Eastern rock blackfish are a prize from the coastal waters of NSW. They provide fantastic sport and quality eating throughout the cooler months.

Thanks Ron, I tried to balance enough info and fishing so people can either watch, learn or both. Only cooked imported prawns are allowed as bait due to viral disease. Biosecurity Australia regulate and control this.

Best to use raw peeled prawns, just from coles or woolies. Cost about 20kg. Salt them so they last on the hook longer and also if you have left over bait, just chuck it back in the freezer.

Andrew, the rod is a discontinued G-Loomis SUR1266 SP. I now use a Penn Prevail 5 - 10kg rod. Not as good but a third of the price of the Loomis.

Thanks The Wagga Bloke, (I was born in Wagga) I use Penn Battle III 5000 reel now and Penn Prevail rods with 30lb braid. I find it feels bites better and with no stretch the fish seem to pull harder. It is great fun. Hooks are Owner bait keepers or SSW in 1/0 or 2/0 if they are big fish. I used to use a 700 Alvey and a 9144 but I'm too old to carry it now. Ha Cheers Dave

Leader is between 25 lb and 40 lb. Generally because of the numbers of big groper around.

DLMedia cheers mate, I also got some Black Magic KS size 2, someone mentioned they are a double strength hook and they had been using them with no complaints. I'm going to run 30lb mono straight through with a small ball sinker, I bought an inflatable life jacket to be safe too.
@kcheong00

Size of hook shouldn't be too big, I normally use a hook about 1cm wide and i've also landed them on hooks about 0.5cm wide. The important bit is to use good quality hooks small hooks. You will also find you get a few more hook ups. However, if you are targetting 45cm+ i'd get larger hooks.

hey seamo what lb line are u using.I normally run 15-25 just curious whats the best.as there's a fine line between to heavy and to light
@dlmedia2111
@dlmedia2111 6 жыл бұрын
Clif, I use 30lb braid only because it doesn't sag and hang up in the weed as much as heavier braids when it gets wet. Leader size will depend on the water clarity. 25lb if it is clear and 40lb when the green murk happens after a southerly. After the southerly is when the big girls move in around here and my best is just over 6kg. I also couldn't stop 2 others. My leader is around 2 metres long and I find I can detect bites better and even what fish through the braid. The braid adds to the bare knuckle fight too, no stretch and you can make no mistakes.

I just read the comments.surprised you use braid seamo.would have picked you for old school mono.I've used braid for pigs and hated it.being to direct I was getting good hits but hardly would they load up the rod and if u did hook one half of em would break of from the no stretch factor and fishing in so close.I find using mono and 2 rod lengths of fluro and even a heavier fluro tippet off about 2ft does the best job.

how to prevent snagging? how is your hook and sinker setup?cheers
@dlmedia2111
@dlmedia2111 7 жыл бұрын
The rig is a simple running No1 ball sinker onto the hook. The secret of snag free is to feel your bait through the line. I use 30lb braided line.

What rod are you using for such big pigs? I heard a 7-15kg is the go although there's this general perception that soft action rods are always the go. I see from the action of your rod, it's got a lot of backbone but loads up in the top 3rd.
@dlmedia2111

Have a look at the PENN Prevail II rods. They are the ducks guts for swinging pigs out of the wash. 20lb braid and 15 - 30lb leader for the big ones.

Good catch and definitely an experienced fisherman, however I give a dislike cus standing on that piece of rock is a very bad demonstration to beginners, some might have the wrong idea thinking its 'perfectly normal' to stand on rocks like that if they want to catch pigs, but guess what? when the wave hits them to the ground, if they are lucky, they could get themselves badly cut, but if they are unlucky, their head might hit the ground before their hand can grab anything, yes that could get themselves killed! (look at the intro video, there is a gap between the rock you are standing and the next piece of rock,, guess what could happen if the wave smash them and their hand gets to where the gap is? yes their head could hit the rock!) Please always demonstrate SAFETY first to the young fisherman so they dont get themselves into difficult situation! This video would've been so much better if you stand on a Flat ground (similar as Avoca beach or most of Terrigal) and if the wave drags you to the ground at least its less likely to get badly injured (or chance of getting dragged back to the water) PS: I am a 15+ years hardcore fisherman from Syd too :O

Hi, While your concerns are noted it isn't encouraging anyone to model my fishing location or how "safe" it is, if I sanitised the video to accommodate "what ifs" there would be nothing to film. The fact, is people need to take care of themselves and demonstrate good judgement. There is plenty of tips and hints on proper rock safety out there and I wear an auto inflate life jacket every time . The sad fact is, where I live there are no flat rock platforms to fish from and, in my 45 years of rock fishing, flat rocks are the ONLY rocks I've ever been knocked over on. 100m behind me is the beach, the reef in front absorbs most of the wave's power, so it is safer than you think. Besides I don't want anyone else fishing my spots. ; )
