Another one I did in high school in 1974. This rock is like a book canted up at a 50 degree angle with a spine that narrows down in the center part to 8 feet. The spine is easy to climb but there's not always good places to put in your protection. The scary thing is if you are leading this climb and you fall, you might peel over the edge of the spine and there it's dead vertical for about 300 feet. Hard to ascend back up to the east face spine in that case. Kinda spooky when you're in the thick of it. You have to make sure you fall down the spine for however long until your last protection.

You tell this like it was yesterday. Amazing how adrenaline enhances the memory. Good stuff!

Good description. Yes, rock climbers and mountaineers seem to have vivid recalls of their most intense adventures. It's true for me. Karl

Nice to see you produce this video with your lovely wife! Fantastic quality as always. Easily had me until the end to see if you'd locate your phone! lol!

And it was POUNDED, actually bent. No touch, no plug for power and no working screen, mag safe charged it and the actual phone worked with “hey Siri”. It was high time to get the wife in there, she gets a little jealous so, that move kept me out of the dog house! And came out nice!

Funny I just passed by this rock today while hiking S Boulder Peak :). Great to see your wife in the video Karl. Climb on

It one of the best. The is only one cooler and we’ll be visiting it at some point. Those peaks are no joke, I assume you did shadow canyon. That is my favorite front range trail, especially during a moist spring. Cheers Jun!

Yes, great to see more of the personal side, including Mrs. was a nice idea. Please consider a couple workout segments, would love to see how you train. And would be a great way to build a bond with us viewers as well! Thanks again 👍

Great idea Eric, my channel will be changing, I’m hearing this more and it will be more fun! My subs are my friends and I’m going to move forward with that style of communication in mind. More engaging my audience and less, reporting/documenting, still maps and such of course. I have also been asked to do a gear guide. I’m trying to come up with some unique ideas to cover both gear and fitness in separate videos. I’m not going to point at specific gear/products too much, more of a focus on specific gear attributes I find to be most useful in various situations, ie shoe types on various terrain, pack features I use most. On the training front, something similar, some workout recommendations for sure but more on the theory of what body/fitness attributes make the most versatile, efficient and strong mountaineer. See you soon Brother

Hey Karl. Great video as always. Nice to see “The Mrs” in this one. She’s a braver lady than me!
@KarlDeckerPresents3 жыл бұрын
She is a very strong gym climber and has been training for 10 years now. She says, “Hi!” Honestly, we are not too brave, just properly trained and experienced. True bravery is feeling scared and pushing through the fear. We can all be brave, hopefully just not foolish,like myself on occasion. . . Glad to hear from you Paul

I would be glad to run up a flat iron with you next spring or something cool. I do envy some of the stuff you climb, I think cranking up some super giant antena would be great fun! But. . .

Love this, I remember base jumpers parachuting off there on a hike up bear peak one time up shadow canyon. Strange in I would expect some crazy vids of you up lumpy ridge in rmnp like batman behind, bowels of the owls and some sundance sneaks. Some things name this feature the moon tower or the matron but whatever it's very cool.

There was a time when my main focus was trad in the “Park”, being older and less patient I have grown more to love moving faster with lighter loads scrambling and hitting peaks so I can see more every trip

great video Karl super cool your wife came with you. i think I started following you on a video you did last year soloing this climb I definetly had to do this one.
@KarlDeckerPresents3 жыл бұрын
I’ll take you if you want, could be just your video. Mine is done 2x. That solo was sketchy, it was cold, north side start, on-sight attempt, and that first pitch is not 5.6, easily 5.9 the way I did it in this video but there are somewhat easier ways. . . My wife is a killer in the gym, been training 2x a week for almost 10years, since we met.

IMO it is the second coolest flatiron of them all. The Maiden is 1# and it is wild. I did shoot some video of it last year with my wife but was not satisfied with it, camera issues. I’ll be doing a video of it eventually. The insane rappel off the top is completely free hanging! Thank you for your support

What length rope, size cams, and nuts do you.recommend? Thank-You for another great video brother!
@KarlDeckerPresents3 жыл бұрын
I used a 60m, and small cams up to .75 or 1 and a full set of nuts. Really the best pro was the double size slings. There’s a nice horn to sling 1/2 way up the first pitch and why I decided to Huck it over the overhang at the top instead of going right on an easy ramp. That pitch is more like 5.8 min and while the rest is way easier maybe 1-2 5.6 moves I think I only set 8 pieces of pro for the entire climb and only saw a few more places I could have set gear. Really the gear was mainly for anchors.

The Flatirons are boring, and not very interesting. Plus there's a ton of poison ivy, sharp sticks, and no good views. I recommend never going here, ever!

@@KarlDeckerPresents Yes, I forgot to mention, there's more gravity there too, just bad all around.
