I see I left a comment 5 yrs ago. If I may Id like to add a few lures here that were very productive this season. Spro makes a 1/2 oz & a 3/4 oz buctail jig in a gold chrome combo. I put 2 on a double dropper loop rig with squid head or strip on the hook & they get smashed. Another is actually striper softbait - Tsunami holographic makes an imitation eel about 6" long paddle tail. Black back & green back they come with a great hook that is weighted. I put these on a double dropper loop also & a 12 oz torpedo below same as with the bucktails. Same squid set up too. These things got absolutely clobbered 4 of them cost like 6 something! Cheap! & strong hooks & hit hard by all the rock cod biting that day. I bought like 4 pks of 4. They also survived a whole day of rock cod gobbling them up so theyre sueprisingly durable. I hit em w scent bloody garlic tuna. Hope this is useful.

I am quite new in rock fishing so of course i went through the wormhole of youtube and online forums doing research on what rigs to use and what not. You made an easy video, simple, explained the jigs and soft baits used. Thank you brotha! Keep it tight! Fish on

I was never a fan of artificial baits/lures. some are pricey and it's annoying as heck. most time the jigs I used are trash after a fishing trip. Ling cod will bite the tail off and it doesn't work like it suppose to. for $less than $4 you can get a box of squid and it catches variety of fishes. No need to swap colors and stuff like that.
@TERRORIZERRRR6 жыл бұрын
You're doing it wrong. Using a Stinger hook is key and very critical to landing those tail nipping Lings.
@koogleyou5575 жыл бұрын
Agreed but we like our toys. My tacklebox may be my retirement. Hey get yo your local asian mkt and buy a couple trays of baby octopus. Cheaper than squid and you get like 14 per tray - like 4.00! They work well - unless u r lucky enough to have your fish cough 1 up - nothing beats that. Hk it and drop it down. I watch the deck for them when ppl start landing fish. Never fails.
@mega_game_play5 жыл бұрын
Koogle You I tried using the octopus vs the squid head-to-head. I was rock fishing near Morrow Bay, California, about 2 miles offshore, at about 180 feet deep. My findings were that the squid has a greater scent/smell, and the octopus has a tougher skin and thus stays on the hook better. The squid can be ripped from the hook so easily. I caught fish from both, however I got more hits with the squid. I think perhaps because of the brighter color and greater scent? Edit: The octopus I was using were about 2 to 2.5 inch diameter.

@@CookedByAlexander sorry just seeing this. Lingcodjigs.com but dont blame me when you blow alk your cash like I did. I got 3 different types but get the copper brown 1 at 6-8 oz and skip the others. Find a bag of lg scented gulp brand grubtails in a color close to lure color slip that on the hook in the skirt and be ready. I always try to hit bottom b4 anyone else on the partyboat at every stop. That 1st bang inevitably bags a ling. I jig from bottom to about 4 turns up and drop back down, repeat. All the gd fish are on the bottom. Schoolies dont taste as gd either.

I have some tips for you now, 1. Party boats are trash, buy your own little boat/dingy, party boats 1. Follow other boats 2. Go to the same spots 3. Sometimes too much people not enough fish. 2.add a little bit of bait to the hooks it might be expensive but worth it.
@ditchxr4437 жыл бұрын
mark minnis why do u say party boats are trash
@davecornett77747 жыл бұрын
For Marc Minnis: Here’s something for you, my clueless friend. Buying your own boat is easier said than done for most. Owning one to go out on the ocean, especially the Islands, must be reliable, seaworthy, and you darn well better know what you’re doing when you’re at the helm in a boat 20-plus miles off of the coast. You’ll need someone on board with you so they can attend to the helm while you fish, and vice-versa, so you have to be a responsible individual. Party boat captains know their craft, the ocean, they’re responsible captains, and well-seasoned sailors. They provide a quality experience for relatively little money for the amounts that they have invested in their boat, crew, gear, and their time so you can catch a fish or enjoy a crab. I don’t know what party boats you have been on for you to develop such a low opinion of them, but you OBVIOUSLY haven’t experienced the boats out of Emeryville or Berkeley. If you have, and you had a bad experience, I would bet you were part of, if not THE PROBLEM.

Just encourage your friend to get a boat, then they can maintain it. Kayaks are pretty dope though. Small dingy style is cool too for some inland stuff, but make sure you have all the safety stuff.
