Great video! In California, we are only allowed have two hooks per line. So, I'd like to put a heavy jig at the end of a the line, weight depends on the depth and current. Two feet above that, a dropper loop for a Bucktail or a white Berkley Gulp, place some slice of fresh squid on those hooks and you're in business. No need to reel up to check if your baits are good, you know you will always have two hooks ready all the time.

Solid loved it! And I love rockfishing! One thing I’d like to mention is the difference between mono and braid when rockfishing...don’t use mono because with the stretch you can barley feel a bite...braid to flouro is solid for sure. Keep em coming guys!

Great reminder. We always use braid tied right to this rockfish rig. You'll need less weight and you will feel even the slightest bite.

I just went rock fishing, found a high speed reel (6:1 ratio) will work awesome if your using a dropper loop with a circle hook. When you feel the bite the fast wind will set that circle all day. (I found using a 1/0 mutu circle was really effective) 6-10oz weight is awesome in my arsenal. Squid strips, live sardines was the ticket. Hope this helps!

WE like high speed reels when fishing lighter weights. Once you get over 16oz we prefer a normal gear ratio. Great tip on the fast wind. Thanks!

You should try shrimp fly rigs with squid we use them in the sf bay area and they work REALY WELL also they will still get bit when your bait falls off.

I'm in Northern California and a trick I use on rockfish is to find the drift direction get uphill of it then I start my trolling motor (Honda 9.9) put it in reverse at an idle or a little more RPM if needed. It will slow my drift down enough that I can go 200 feet or more with a 1 1/2 oz lead head with a 5 inch Big Hammer swim bait. With a steelhead rod with a Abu 5000 series spooled with 30 pound PowerPro is a fun way to rockfish. We pound them this way.

We call that "stemming" the tide and it's a deadly technique. Keeps you on the spot way longer. We also love fishing these rockfish on the light gear when we can get them shallow. Down here we have to fish 200'+ and sometimes 450'. Amazing how hard they pull in that shallow water.

back when Cambria (Hearst Castle area) still had a pier, we had good luck w/ yoyo jigs (16 oz. maybe?) that we cast w/ scrap pieces of melted lead and a ringed treble hook. being cheap to make, it wasn't too much of a hurt on the wallet

This works great as well! We prefer this technique in shallower water since the yoyo iron isn't that heavy. Companies like ProMar and Pitbull make some heavy jigs just for rockfish that work awesome at the deeper depths.

You're absolutely right. They probably like squid more than any other bait. The only problem is EVERYTHING likes squid. You end up catching a lot of small fish and less desirable species. That's why we focus on these larger baits. They get just as many bites but the fish tend to be the kind we want and usually much bigger!

I too run a 60 pound mono leader, it's the heaviest line I can still break off from a boat. I run 65 pound braid and the mono breaks off before it.

Perfect. You can also go to 80# and just use a 2 turn clinch knot to your sinker. The knot will slip if you get hung up bad. Good luck!

I use 80 lb mono for main and 60 lb fluoro for braid then connect my 16 oz weight to a short 30 lb mono attach to the 80 lb main so when I get hung up it breaks easily.

Trying to find a reel that does it all... if I have to buy two that aren't super expensive what do you recommend? 1 rod and reel for rock fishing (conventional?) and 1 rod and reel for tuna, bonito, yellowtail, etc. (spinning?)

A PENN slammed 3 5500 will catch just about anything in SoCal. For Rockfish and bigger yellows I’d suggest a fathom 25N. Great all around reel.

In my opinion you can get away with mono because it tends to be so dark down there the the rock fish won’t be able to see the difference between mono and flouro.

No doubt. Rockfish aren't picky. We like to use a little 60# flouro because it's stiffer and prevents tangles. But mono will work fine as well.

The reason I use braid to fluorocarbon is the sensitivity and feel compared to full mono.

We call them shrimp flies and they are deadly. Only problem is little fish like them also. Try topping them with a bigger profile bait like a Sardine, Mackerel strip or big old Gulp Grub.

Very similar rig. We would use a PENN Fathom lever drag with 80# braid and 50 or 60# leader and a live bait. Those LA Bay yellows are strong and mean!

We use 80# Seaguar Threadlock on both. On the 80's we need the heavier line as they do double duty for medium size 60-140# tuna. On the smaller reels like the 25, we use 80# because it casts better (has more body and "jumps" off the reel) and we don't need to use a lot of line to fill the reels.

It is called rockfishing because in California, Oregon and Washington you have to go on a boat to go for deeper waters and fish on rocky structures at the bottom of the ocean where rockfish and Lingcods are.

Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

Use slow pitch or Colt Snipers and you will kill the rockfish too. Boccaccio can't resist the colt snipers and tend to eat the jigs at 50 to 100 feet from bottom. The reds are close to the bottom. They all love the jigs.

@@hectorrodriquez8785 Bocaccios are easy to limit out. They love the sardine. You just need to fish about 50 feet above the bottom. The big reds like sardines too. If you have squid they love that. Colt snipers are deadly if you know how to use them properly. I use a slow pitch rod and the flexible tip gives the jig the right action for the fish to strike.

Those reels are way too big for rockfish. A smaller Lexa 400 or Komodo SS on a 6' 6" Ugly stick tiger or Shimano Trevala with 50lb braid gives you plenty of line and power for deeper rockfish.

You are correct and that's a great set up. We prefer to fish a little deeper and with mulitple hooks. The heavier rod allows for a heavier weight and the ability to horse up multiple fish. Different strokes...
