I worked underground in the late 80’s for a few years, and it was the best group of people I ever worked with. I was a surveyor, but I went to every heading in the mine, whether it was a stope, a raise or a drift. I loved it.

Very important to do. I lost a friend to a fall of ground accident.. Terrible stuff. Definitely one of the leading causes of death in the mining industry

we used to keep an eye out for rollers, then we used to place wooden wedges in the roof for movement in the cracks. If the wedge was on the ground after you had gone through you knew there was a problem. (that was in coal) the mechanical rockbolts used to turn inside out as we were tightening them up . micaf 11 orebody mount isa mines 1974 / 75. also you bar from good to bad and keep your eyes open and ears tuned.

I mined is the States during the '80's. Never heard of the one hole one bolt rule. We used a split set bolt with metal plates and metal "headboards," and "chicken wire" like is used in the video. Split sets would break a wooden head board as can be seen in the video. While not great, this video is not that bad. Baring down sucks, but it is a must.

Dont know much about mining in the states but here in Canada that video would never be shown. I seen numerous instances where different rules were broken. Improper lengths of scaling bars, no proper retreats while scaling and of course the guy bolting had 2 holes drilled before installing one bolt!! 1 Hole 1 Bolt I do believe is the rule. Maybe rules are different down there but wow I was suprised to see these basic mining mistakes made in a safety video.

@Ceecel - You are so right Ceecel. I have worked underground in the states more times than I care to mention and their rules are so much worse than ours are in Canada. 1 hole 1 bolt is the standard rule...anything else is just plain stupid.

at 12:24 those plates are under tremendous stress. They are "umbrella'ed" as a sign of being overloaded. That's a chute/pass/mill-hole/undercut and not the face of an advancing drift.

That JCI 125M needs a FOPS canopy. I wouldn't operate without one in ground that bad.

They forgot to mention looking for pretty rocks in bug holes.

My personnel best was in one day was 60 bolts with the long metal plates and 50 bolts with the chain link fence. Got paid $2 for a bolt with plates and $2.05 with "chicken wire." Not a bad days pay even now.

Im a bit late and I know almost nothing about mining (though not quite nothing for various reasons) but I think that they purposefully showed mistakes so as to make it apparent what to watch out for. 4 years late.. I know. Sorry :) Hope you're doing well.

these guys have beards. I've only shaved in my 55+ years when I worked underground and on gas and oil rigs. Masks don't seal on bearded faces
