Sammy Hagar has undeniable by far better vocal range, it's unbelievable the notes he hits in When it's Love, I can't stop loving you, Dreams, etc... On the other side, Lee Roth has a unique harmonic high notes and personality not only in his vocals but on the stage, a showman. They're just worlds apart equally good in different ways.

But as I said he knows how to use his harmonic vocal notes super well in many early hits such as You’re No Good, Bottoms Up, etc… As a showman Dave is unbeatable (but not on the range) agree or not the records prove.

I’m a fan of both as well. It’s seems like Sam has made an effort to get along in the past when they toured together in 2002. But Dave’s massive ego and persona prevented them from performing together during that time. I think Dave is by far the better Lyricist, But Sam is the better singer, even though I preferred Roth on vocals. Roth was a great front man - performer.

All you have to do is look at the charts for each of the Van Hager era, to see just how popular they were! Not saying that the Van Hagar stuff wasn't good, just the writing is better with Dave and not all watered down ballads. But do I think they should put differences aside to pay tribute to Eddie? WTF??!! Dave dedicated everything to the band. And VH’s former late manager Noel Monk of blessed memory and producer Ted Templeman said VH would not exist without Dave. Even the late Great iconic uber talented Ed VH said that Dave was a better songwriter. I saw them perform with Dave in their prime. I saw Dave kick his ass jumping, strattles in the air, dancing and he kept us on our feet the whole time. No one sat down. We were part of the Panama video and I was extremely young but I knew they were magic. Sam wrote a damn song for VH called “Up for Breakfast” and it was all about his junk and food “She put butter on my biscuit, berries of my melon”, what kind of lyrics are those?! It’ gross, stupid. When Ed got clean he publicly said “how did I let those lyrics go?”. Dave had them sell out arenas in every city and they played 2-3 shows in each city, with Sam it didn’t happen and the great VH opened for Bon Jovi!! Van Halen open for Bon Jovi?! I think you all need to to listen to the 1st 6 albums. Dave was on fire and Ed was on fire. They were a team that embraced creativity. And how many times did Sam produce videos where he's sticking out his middle fingers and saying "F U Eddie Van Halen!". Nonsense. Plus Dave NEVER exposed anything about Ed's personal life. Sam did it in order to sell books!!! Half the crap in there isn't even true!! Sam cant STFU about his "love" for VH. There is no reasonable argument of Hagar vs Roth. I don’t view the separate eras as the same band with different lead singers. That comparison is reserved for bands like Journey and Foreigner. Bands exclusively performing the music,created by the original lineup and lead singer responsible for the bands hits, meaningful music, and legacy. They are simply bands, that may be entertaining to some, yet warrant no comparison to the original. that may be entertaining to some but pails in comparison to the true band. The 2 Van Halen eras are 2 different iconic bands. Both with paramount success individually with original music, different lead singer each with huge contributions to the writing, recording, and success of each. The Roth Van Halen and Hagar version are each, on their own, on the list of greatest bands of all time. The argument shouldn’t be Dave vs Sammy. It should be equivalent to the long time argument of the Beatles vs the Stones.

You can't deny Roth's impact on the industry as a whole, and the Roth Era albums are incredible. But the Van Hagar era ushered in a new standard for rock bands, and music in general. We saw a band of four virtuosos in their own rights firing on all cylinders from 5150 to Balance. Roth was great. He took the band to a height never reached before. But Sammy took them to the stratosphere.

Liked Montrose, even liked some of Sammy Hagars songs but neither of those bands or songs really hit as big as DLR era VH or had as much influence. Hagar would had went the way of many performers if he didn't land a dream gig with VH, his previous music wasn't ground breaking nor did it ever hit the heights that DLR era VH was putting out. DLR might not be a great singer but his whole approach, attitude, stage presence and the context of what he wrote in his songs along with EVH playing is what propelled VH over the top nothing Hagar could had done if he was the original singer, it would had been a good band with a great guitarist and there are many bands like that. Dave was VH, Hagar was just a replacement carried by the name of VH that saved his career.
