Had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman about 10 years ago. I worked on a Mr. Big music video in a recording studio in LA. It was a small crew of about 4 people and the guys were all top class musicians and wonderful people. No egos, great sense of humor, and very approachable. Legends. RIP Pat.

yea, oddly enough, many young talented shredders are bad at phrasing. they basically try to go and hit the notes really really fast and ignore the phrasing. speed isn't everything

Maggy Frog that’s why Angus Young was always one of my favorites. He never shredded, but that man could groove a guitar solo like no other. Everything he plays sounds so simple, but when you learn his stuff the feel is just awesome.

He taught Brian Carroll. If y'all know, y'all know. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but hearing Buckethead talk about his parents driving him to guitar lessons with Paul, and how much he changed his life, is pretty fuckin heavy. Hearing Satchel from 'Steel Panther' talk about living in the spare room when Paul went on the road with 'Mr. Big' is epic as well. Just a great man, who happens to be one of the greatest and most inspirational guitar players/guitar teachers of all time.

I love Paul Gilberts "think like a drummer" approach to guitar. He references this in many of his videos. And when you listen to him play, he really treats the guitar like a percussion instrument just as much as a melody instrument.

When I was a teenager I saw Racer X in Hollywood and was able to get on to the back of the stage and actually sit on top of one of Paul's cabinets with my buddy beside me for about 3 songs before we were kicked off! I think it damaged my ears but it was totally worth it! Paul is amazing. One of the most mind-blowing guitarists ever and now I see he's an amazing teacher, too. This makes me smile and want to play along with all of his lessons. Thank you, Paul. You're the best!

I'm clapping my hand with applause as I watch this lesson about the bongos as rhythm, rudiments. As I try to explain this to other guitarist they are perplexed....The is the way I've always though of my way of creating melodies in my solos, also with the use of my "giant finger" the "feel" of the sound, unexplainable, are tone and vibrato, but the very essence of a beautiful guitar solo....

Great lesson. Too many musicians, myself included, just take rhythmic content for granted. We practice hours a day learning our scales, arpeggios, chords, etc., but if it doesn’t have a rhythm you can’t make music. I had a guitar teacher that had me use flash cards. Each card has a one bar phrase written on it. He had me shuffle them and randomly lay them out in a sentence. First tap out the rhythm, then play notes in a phrase to match the rhythm. Very helpful in getting the creative side working.

Back in ‘89 I think it was my band did a show with Racer-X at a place called The Mason Jar in Arizona and it was a pleasure to see him play then and it’s even more so to see him play now. I’ll never forget right before they went into their David Bowie cover of ‘Moonage Daydream’ the singer said “My mom wrote this... on acid.” And of course ‘Scarified’ rocked my socks off.
