That burst practice tip will be the golden egg for some people. That was exactly how I learned to play the intro to Cowboys from Hell, learn it as 3 parts, (1-4 twice on top string was part 1. 1 on A string and 4 on E twice was part 2, and 1-A, 4-E, 2-A, 4-E was part 3.) And I played until I could do each part isolated at quite a bit faster than the actual song, and once I had those down, put them all together at the tempo of the actual song, which was technically slower then what I could play them isolated. It's a super useful way to do it in my experience.

Great post! The licks are great. I’ve never had a name for it, but I use the speed bursts regularly. Even just trying to attach a shift from one position to another. Pick the 4 notes and nail the shift. Then work on the next four or whatever. Great technique

Awesome! for me, if i play the first note from the next beat, it helps putting the positions together. then i like to put together 2 beats at a time, and keep increasing the length of what im playing until i have the whole lick. like i said, full video on this coming soon :D

Thank you for the exercise for increasing speed. Speed bursts are something I've tried and heard of. But most of the time when I try to improve my picking speed, I'm mainly practicing riffs/ solos or songs a lot slower. Whereas I have seen quite a few lessons explaining that you actually need to push yourself past what is comfortble ( within reason) to actually speed up when you reach a certain level. I don't want to be stuck around 110 / 120 bpm for all of time. Excellent video, thank you for the tabs and for explaining everything so clearly. I appreciate that you give tabs for free and don't ask me to join or sign up to anything. I'll be subscribing ! Anyway , this is an incredible lesson to make for free. I hope your channel continues to grow, you deserve it! :)

As a few people said, PG picks everything and is a master picker. This is more a hybrid between picking and legato. But it’s still good. I prefer to pick everything if I can.

oh boy, i spend WAY too much time on my lights and other aspects of my production quaility than i probably should as a guitar channel haha. I have about 10 different lights: i large godox 100 watt light with a soft box, small LED panel lights as the fill light, as well as another for a teal backlight and teal on the wall behind the guitars, then some small pocket LED lights on the guitars and whiskey bar, and some cheap LED bar lights one 2 of the shelfs behind my whiskey collection. and dont get me started on my cameras, lens, and colour grading haha

In the original cut of this video i had a whole 2 mins going through that scale/shape. KZbin retention is brutal tho lol, and you are right it needs its own video. In short, its a mixture of mostly minor blues and dorian :)

When we say Shredding on guitar, usually we mean playing lots of notes really fast while soloing. and then the techniques are the things i talk about in this video, such as note divisions, note choice, alternate picking, legato etc. Hope that helps :)

I remember buying RacerX first album 1986? - i was like ok he's my age let's hear it. Fffkk. And then later seeing them live in LA. I was a already a minted YW freak a few years before RacerX, and after the last decade of Ulis and MSG and Iommi, VH and Blackmores. I literally hated PGs tone. Hated it. And i didn't even understand what tone was, but i hated it. Live it was shrinking piercing pain. Great player though i kinda leaned Bulliet, but my accolades go to PG for being the most humble gracious and effective teacher. I had all those VHS, or copied them from friends. It made me a fan of him as a musician and as a person way more than anything. Saw Mr Big open for Rush a decade later por something, people were throwing sht at him ( at a Rush headline show..lol what) But you know what. He smiled dodged and quite literally shredded as Mr Paul Gilbert can do ( better tone too ) :)

Hi! thankyou! i'm not sure which part you mean by Line 1 and 3. But try playing the video back at half speed and watching my right hand for the up/down strokes. they are pretty intuitive for these licks :)

i think in lick 2, i start with a down stroke on the high E, then and up stroke on the B, 2 pulloffs, and and upstroke on the G. same for all the positions and speeds @@qpdband

Tired is good. Do it again next day as long as you can and you go a bit longer. Next day longer and soon BAM all day. Fingers are weird - you MUST put the time in but you DO notice real soon like next day when you put the time in. I do p-offs with ring and pinky now - and those 2 fingers couldn't do SH*T before I decided to try - 1st day nada, 2nd day got about 3 clean reps, next day about 6 good p-offs and all of a sudden the easy fingers 1st, 2nd and middle could do pull offs a lot faster and stronger and the "dumb" fingers felt like newborn damn fingers in about a week. Like gaining 2 new weapons 40% more fingers. The thing is to just do it for a couple days and you FEEL the diff right away. The pinky could literally only do ONE weak ass pull off first day - would've given up but next day the damn thing did like 3 so on we went !!!

first off, thanks for watching! There is a lot of reasons why our notes might sound different. But for getting nice clean hammers and Pull-offs, a great exercise is just to trill between different combinations of fingers. my video with randy Rhodes on the thumbnail shows this. and your endurance and efficiency will improve over time :)

It's a Rif, that's kind of like what I started back in 2013 and it works well on stage jumping around, but my guitar tuning is completely off from the norm, and a mix of 10#gage drop D mids 9#Gage, B and last E are 8#gage, but that Orange astronaut suit cracked me up. You are second person to say this, and to be fair, Paul Gilbert is famous for his alternate picking and i maybe should have mentioned it at least once in the video so thanks for pointing it out.... that said, if you watch the tokyo solo, or the solo for scarified, its like 80/20 these types of licks vs pure alternate picking. DW i will be covering alternate picking a LOT, its one of the most misunderstood techniques in modern rock guitar IMO :)

So? It's the same thing just with different technique. Legato/economy picking is a good skill to have. Just alternate picking everything sounds stale and robotic, using all of them together makes good phrasing and a better sound imo. Seen tons of guys that can speed pick perfect but can't bend a note in key, be humble.
