An intelligent and entertaining movie, with a fast-moving plot, all spiked with a slice or two of humour. Film noir movies of that era are always so well-contrived, free of gimmicks and special effects which are not at all needed to get the required atmosphere.

"Truly a Crime collating, at times hysterical cinematic," Rock Hudson, those nestle crunch bars, Julie London, and Jayne Meadows together create the impression that an injustice noir can be compelling and laughable at the same time. Julie london was also innervating in that 1959 great, "The wonderful country," beside Robert Mitchum for others whom desire to see her different.

Thank you for posting that little, but pleasant, movie. And what a pleasure to see the beautiful Julie London, even if she's not singing! It's not a Rock Hudson film, literally, but he is still the key, the axis of the plot. And he is so young, so sweet, so good looking in that "tough guy" role... so tall too: when Julie London is hanging at his neck, she looks like a child trying to climb a tree... :-)

This was an unexpected treat. I remember as a kid listening to the radio program. There would be foot steps at the start, a coin dropped into a scale and a rich announcer's voice: the "Weight 232 pounds, who is he?...the Fat Man." All this with that distinctive tune. Nice to see a young Jayne Meadows and Rock Hudson. This film was made only a few years after the war when there was optimism and plans for the future. Anyway, the film is done very well for what it was given to do. Hard to believe it's been almost 70 years. A different America in every way.....

I really enjoyed the characterizations and mix of humor and suspense. it's almost a film noir comedy. The story-line developed logically, which is unusual for many detective pictures. I'll have to listen to some of the radio play episodes of "The Fat Man", which Smart appeared in from 1946 -51.

Had to add "What a treat to see Emmett Kelly as the bad guy in clown make up and out of clown make up. Always remembered him from the Red Skelton show..1950's and 1960's .

Shifty sounds alot like Joe pesci. The phrase, "tall, dark and handsome" was thought up with Rock Hudson in mind.

Impeccably dressed, wry sense of humor..Being a former fattie, I'm watching this one to see how J. Scott is attired in every scene. He's very charismatic. The plot is the typical 50's noir pot boiler. He passed away in the 60's. It's easy to understand why.

The actor who played the role of Pinkie (Marvin Kaplan) had a similar bit part in 1963's blockbuster It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He was 36 at the time. When he played Pinkie, he was just 24. He lived to be 89.

The "Fat Man" character comes from a radio series, which is in turn based on Dashiell Hammett's "Continental Op." Hammett doesn't get a screen credit; he was jailed during the McCarthy period.
