I own several 1911s including an RIA CS Tactical 1 and I have put several hundred rounds through it and it matches or outperforms my more expensive models and is the one I carry daily. It’s never failed to fire or feed no matter what kind of ammo I put through it. I trust it with my life.

Rock island armory 1911 slides are forged 4140 steel, and the frames are cast 4140 steel. they can last as much as any other cast slide 1911 manufacturer like Ruger etc.

After years of study I have developed the mathematical formula to find the number of 1911 pistols that you need . It is remarkably simple . Take the number you currently own and set that to" X" . As X is your current number the number you need is X+1 . That is the simple part . But once acquired the +1 becomes part of X and the equation resets . So X+1=X and then you start over with X+1 . Glad I paid attention in high school math class so I can figure these things out .

I have the Mid sized model in 10mm and it has been 100% reliable out of the box, so I don't buy into the break in period. My gun is also very tight, no rattles at all. The price was $650 and for a 1911 in 10mm that is pretty reasonable.

Glad the firearm is functioning well out of the box however the break in period isn’t fiction. It’s of course, more like friction. Quality metals wearing into other quality mating steel. It’s what one wants over time. I’d be interested in seeing molecular studies on Philippine steel vs 🇺🇸 gun manufacturers “tool-grade” steel. Just my 2¢. ✌️

I'm not saying I own any guns, not saying that at all! I do, however, have a friend who owns four Rock Island M1911s and loves them. This guy carries his compact model in his front pocket at all times, fits right in a pair of Wranglers and is fully concealed. The RI logo did wear off the slide after a few years, but that makes no difference, this guy is VERY smart and absolutely loves his RIs! Good review.

I have the base model of this one great gun! I am continuously impressed by RIA very high quality. I own two 1911s and a shotgun by them, only thing you have to remember is CLEAN them of their packing grease because there will be metal shavings mixed in and can cause extraction problems but once it's cleaned it's good to go.

I've owned one Rock Island, a basic GI model. It shot about 5" off to the right. Got to looking and not only was the front sight canted, the slide and frame was canted slightly. This was an earlier one than the billboard logo sides, so hopefully their machining has improved a bit. On the positive, it ran flawlessly right out of the box. Rite out of the box, with zero cleaning of packing oils, it ran over 600 rounds with no malfunctions. When it did start to have failure to feeds it was Lee Alox build up on the feed ramp dragging on the old cast bullets I was shooting up. I've no doubt with FMJ it would have easily ran forever. As long as I kept it reasonably clean and run good ammo, it never jammed.

I picked up one of these little babies in 9mm. I NEVER thought I'd even consider a 1911 for concealed carry but that's all changed now. Wear it almost as much as my Glock 23 lately. Liked it so much I picked up the same model in full sized 45ACP- also excellent. If you are considering one of these just do it and buy with confidence. Sweet smooth shooting and love the sites.

@cmj20002
@cmj20002 6 жыл бұрын
It feeds any ammo I give it, but you are better off running the full power 10mm if that is what you are getting. Mine came with a 24lb spring so it does well with heavy loads. I shoot Underwood and buffalo Bore 180 gr JHP's that are rated at 1350fps at the muzzle and I have some smaller 135 gr JHP's that scream at 1600fps. Fun gun to shoot and a nice fireball comes out as well. The only issue is follow up shots can be a challenge with full house 10mm. If you go with 9mm or .45 ACP then that will not be an issue.

RIA gas come a long way. My lady up in AK has the regular CS tactical, 1 step below this. Good dovetailed regular sights, the modern hammer, trigger, and beavertail, regular rubberized plastic grips, no mag well funnel and a single sided standard safety. It shot just fine, no issues at all, and good accuracy. I was pleased when i saw what it was and the features it had, and that she had some McCormick mags for it. I also noticed the quality of the machining and assembly when i cleaned it the day before our range day. I was very pleased. I have a few 1911's, both 5" and commander length, but i have never had an officer's. I will probably get one of my own. Just need to have an ambi safety installed, and i would probably get some nice wood grips, but that is just me. I can certainly live without a mag well (i have my whole life, lol), but at least this one is low profile. Of course, for the added cost of grips and ambi safety, i could probably just buy this one. If the milspec one has dovetail sights, i might just get it. Anyway, they also make a CCO model with the officer's grip frame and the commander length barrel and slide, which is a nice way to go. I think they have an alloy frame version too, which would be nice, and save 6 or 7 oz. Anyway, hard to go wrong. Good review and excellent points.

Headframe Hunters Any issues with Flat nose rounds feeding or lead fowling with lead cast? I have a sig commander size and wanted to try both but was apprehensive. The 1911 gets a bad rap for feeding anything other than ball which I know was a problem with bad GI feed ramps and mags.

After this review , i looked and found one in a near by pawnshop for $429! It was a neglected tool (rust on the barrel) and not functional. I talked them to drop it to 350 because they were unfamiliar with the brand and me complaining about the wobbly grip safety, a quick fix and it would not fire (saw the trigger adjustment was screwed all the way in and is probably hitting the mag release, rendering it useless, my theory) I believe they (previous owner and store) were unaware of this pistol life time warranty. Thanks for everyones lack of knowledge on these 1911s in this situation....380$ out the door for this pistol is a steal! Got it on layaway getting it out on march, im itchin to break it down and do it right! Thanks sootch for the convincing review. Will report back after i take it to the range (woods out back).

I've got the full size version of that pistol and it is fantastic and shoots like a dream. The only thing I did to it was take a dremmel to the pointed edge on the safety (bothered me while shooting) and round it off a bit and reblued, made a difference.

In the past (like 9 years ago) armscor (Philippine name), made them a really tight fit. The understanding was that if you really liked guns they could save some money on elbow grease and let you mate the barrel and slide yourself. Shame they've gone mass market in that sense. I also love the wooden grips on mine. I've since swapped out all the mim parts (I got the one with the billet frame), but I kept the beautiful wood handgrips. It's just gorgeous. Tempered flare and rugged elegance.

Guide rod bull tappered barrel officer size stainless ( high viz sights ! 2 /8 round mags getting 2 /10 rounders !!! Going to gold dura coat with a clear coat ! No beaver tail ( don't like them ) or extenred safety don't want anything dropping the safety ( I use it hunting and I don't want anything bumping it ) Did the mag well extended mag release and slide stop ! Had to put the old hammer spring ( more lbs ) all on my old essex frame before there was paper work ! Had to fit each part ! Don't do it unless you can do it ! Take it to a smith and save yourself the heart ace ! Don't let this gun be your learning curve !

I would replace the full length guide rod with a Wilson Combat Sentinel flat wire guide rod with Wilson Combat 22 lb. Flat wire. I have done this with my Colt Officer's 1911 Lightweight. 45 ACP. It has functioned flawlessly and is easy to take apart for cleaning without the use of the paperclip. Great option and Wilson states that the spring would last 40,000 rounds.

There are some inherent issues with compact 1911's They jamb often. You really have to work the pistol in and do a lot of internal polishing, especially the feed ramp. They are ammunition sensitive, so you will need to hone in on a specific brand and specifications and stick with it.

This is discussion of that very thing... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYLIZp53aJt7hKM On my Colt, the only issue I had was the gun didn't want to feed the last round out of the magazine. If the magazine spring isn't on point (like has been sitting around loaded for a long while) this happens. Wilson Combat 8 round mags fixed it for me. shopwilsoncombat.com/1911-Magazine-45-ACP-Compact-8-Round-Lo-Profile-OM-Steel-Base-Pad-Black-Fluoropolymer-Finish/productinfo/47DOXB/

@@joelsys_75 i have a kimber ultra carry. Plain jane ol black pistol and seriously never had an issue....wait,,, I had one magazine where it wouldn't lock the slide back after the last round, and several other mags it locked back every time. Sorry you're having all that trouble man because dang i enjoy my girl. Miss Kimber always got my back

@@nateand3 Once I tuned them, never had issues with either pistol. One can have similar issues with a Standard frame 1911's. Ammunition related with some. This is all part of shooting, analyzing problems when they arise!

Bought my RI FS-TACTICAL 3 years ago, shot 2000+ rounds through her in that time with out one problem. When I go shooting this 1911 is usually the one I grab.

Wilson Combat makes an 8 rnd mag magazine with metal spacer designed for officers 1911's in either stainless or black. I highly reccomend them. Their polymer followers make for positive feeding.

I have one of these. I like it well enough, but: 1. a piece of the grip safety broke off. Low quality MIME part 2. it came with what felt like a 9 pound recoil spring. Needed replacement 3. you will find that the grip dimensions are not to spec for a 1911 Officer. Which means you can only use Rock Island parts such as main spring housing. Of even 3-leaf spring. 4. build quality can vary on the frame Overall, if you like to work on your 1911s, this is a decent starting point. If not - get something like a Ruger

I agree with you. They're decent. If you like working on a pistol, this is a good price point to start at.

I am really looking at a Rock Island Armory as my first 1911. I have always wanted a 1911, but the price tag of $1,000 has made it difficult with other brands. I just can't figure out which model I want. Thanks for another awesome video, Sootch.

Richard De Leon I'm curious.. why get a 1911 in 9mm and not .45? capacity? It was built around the .45 Please explain why you would go 9mm and not .45 thanks!!

I have a full size tactical, it's an older one with plane wood grips and the billboard logo and I've never had a problem with it despite so many people saying they are crap guns. The one thing I can think of was some bad machining or something for the grip safety so it would stick because of a little burred spot on the frame. Other than that it's an excellent 1911 for the money I've noticed a slight price drop in other 1911's since ria has became more popular.
