I remember this story. That’s typical of Eddie. There was another story from when he had his Ernie Ball Music Man endorsement. He was up at the warehouse visiting Sterling Ball and there was one of Eddie’s guitars in the shop for repair. Not his personal guitar but a customer who bought one. Ed looks at the address and says that’s on my way home I’ll drop it off for him. And he does. Shows up at the guys house and spends a couple of hours with him, playing his guitar through his equipment and showing the guy how to set up his guitar. Imagine that!

That is so awesome. Got so sick of all the crap and click bait b.s on youtube that I barely click on any of the links anymore, just the songs. I saw an interview video where the guy was telling the story of how he became friends with Eddie, he gave Eddie a shirt and guitar pick when he got invited into their dressing room at a meet n greet type thing before a show.. Totally floored him. theyd just hang out, eat burritos drink some coca-colas. he got to ask alot about amps etc. and at times he got listen to Eddie just rip beyond full blast. Its good to hear the stories that shows his humanity. Thank you.

Funny story: the day after EVH died a co-worker came into work and said, check this out! He had a photo of his grandfather with EVH. They were both arm around shoulders and and each holding a can of Miller Lite. I asked him the circumstance behind the photo. The year was 1987. EVH was passing through Texas for some reason and stopped in to see a childhood friend. This friend was co-worker's neighbor. I guess there was a lot of garage hanging out in that neighborhood because his grandad was there when EVH rolled up but grandad had no idea who he was. He offered him a beer. EVH evidently said, "Thanks but don't tell anyone. I just got out of rehab." And then everyone laughed. I believe this was not long after Papa Van Halen passed away in December of 1986 and Alex and Ed wanted to make better life choices than be like their dad. I beleive rehab took for Alex. But as Alex stated in a recent interview, it's something Ed struggled with all his life. While the co-worker's photo was interesting and funny, it was also really sad. Pretty crazy that EVH just stopped in to Lancaster, Texas, one day.

I realize nobody will believe me but I was on AOL one night in 1995 and used to go into the chat rooms and strike up conversations with strangers ---- well one night I saw a username of "EdVanHalen" and I sent an instant message and the person responded --- I asked "is this the real Eddie Van Halen?" and the person said "Yes it is" and I was in shock LOL. We had a short conversation and I told him I was one of his biggest fans and he said "thanks, really appreciate that" and then logged off. To this day, I am still convinced it really was Eddie I was talking to on AOL that night. You can choose not to believe me, and I have no solid proof it was Eddie, but it just seemed too authentic to be fake.

I read this in Rolling Stone when it first dropped. Edward was a human being first. Guitar hero second. He was like all of us on planet Earth: flawed. But still human. I miss Edward Van Halen. I miss the prospect of new music and tours. But his family misses their brother, son, father, husband, friend. Edward and band represent the greatest times of my life: the 1970s and 1980s. Funny, my wife got me the Tone Chaser book for Christmas and I'm reading the introduction when this video popped up. Quick VH story. I see his guitar solo being reacted to on YT and think back. I was at The Salt Palace in SLC Utah where my uncle ran a security company. He got me backstage since my 1st concert Steppinwolf with Iron Butterfly. During the 5150 Tour I was sitting by a wall of speakers when he busted out that solo. Since I'd seen him before I was expecting to be blown away. I was sitting 15' away and could feel the spotlight heat on the back of my dumb head. That dude is responsible for the way guitar was played post 1978. Everyone took something from him. Everyone. You hear things like "I've seen a 10 y/o play Eruption" maybe so but if weren't for EVH he wouldn't know squat about that style. It's much easier to parrot something than it is cutting it from whole cloth. The dude was amazing.

He would answer his phone! I looked him up back in '05 via Yahoo People Search and talked to him. Anybody remember that? It was a common "3000" number. I really didn't think it would be that easy until he keeps talking about his screwed up answering machine. Hearing that high pitch voice oh his gave me chills as I was listening. Huge let down when he asked "If I was in town?" I think he thought he knew me. I told him I was from Ohio and he was bummed. Sounded like so much of a lie that I called the next night and talked to Wolf. You could hear Ed in the background yelling at him telling him to hang up. I was respectful both times and let them go with no issue.

I remember this story. So much of what Ed said to this guy contradicted what we now know was happening. For example, the whole thing about new music not being able to happen. Ed said this to Guitar Player also. The reality is that they actually wrote and demoed new songs that were to be part of the reunion with Mike. First there was to be a reunion tour with Mike and then the album and farewell. They actually started booking tentative dates and then Ed’s health went downhill. Who knows what was going on in his mind.

He played The Columbus Convention Center in Columbus Ohio and I remember taking my Niece and her BF. I’ve had kids since then,and seen many much better concerts. Including Van Halen at Buckeye Lake July of 1993. Much better and much more memorable. I’ll get back with a more accurate date. That’s an incredible story! Regarding Roth’s ego, you would think he would be grateful to Ed and Al for bringing him back into VH in 2007. He was a total has been at that point. Unless he realized that VH needed him back because they ran out of options. Gary Charone failed so no one was going to accept another new lead singer. In that sense, I guess he felt he still had the upper hand. I just compared it to KISS when they brought back Ace and Peter as hired guns. That’s how they should’ve treated Dave. Honestly, I would’ve paid money just to see VH perform as a three-piece instrumental band. But I’m a musician. The general public may not have gone for that. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to see VH live eight times starting in 1980 and closing with the appearance on Hollywood Blvd for Jimmy Kimmel.

I had Eds cell phone number in 2010. That year on Fathers Day Eve. I wrote a generic Happy Farhers day post so i could mass text it to all the Fathers in my contact list. I worked my way through my contacts and when I got to Ed I added him as well. The next day I was going through all of the return messages I had received. And there it was. Ed wrote me back. He wrote "Thank you so much. Happy Fatbers Day to you too!" And then he wrote by the way, who is this, only your number came up but no name." I kinda panicked and said we met through Chip Ellis. Which was a lie. And that was it I never heard from him again. In hindsight I really regret lying to him. Ive talked to a few people who were clise with him through the years and they have told me if I had been honest and just told him I was a fan that I had a real chance at befriending him... oh well you cant change the past. Lesson learned too late.

Finally some insight into what I think we all already suspected. What I can't really put my finger on now though is, why, is Alex pro Dave these days since his book release? I get that brothers disagree, I do with mine all the time, but the Van Halen Bros seemed to be linked and inseparable in what they thought and how they thought. I get the Sammy thing, after I read his book Red when it came out, I started to notice that he was all about brand(s) and therefore money. I really question now what Sammy said after Ed passed about he and Ed texting like it was some kind of brotherly love fest. As for Dave, I never liked the man, but I appreciated the energy and flash and attention he brought to the band in the beginning. I appreciate Sammy for the same thing in the second coming of Van Halen. I liked Alex's book Brothers, for the insight from his perspective. Though I'd still like to know his view and take and stories from the Hagar era as well. Just having no explanation as to why the book suddenly jumps from Dave leaving in 1984 to Eddie passing in 2020, seems strange to me. I can understand not wanting to speak of a time or person etc.. But at least explain why. It makes it seem suspect to something being hidden or an personal attack to Sammy. Which is Alex's prerogative. I just don't understand. I greatly appreciate the way the Van Halen brothers really stayed out of it and let those two singers dig their own holes. Part of me thinks that this is just how singers\frontmen are. That's their job. But then they just become the character and forget who they actually were. Lead Singer disease. It sucks that singer only get a few years to really show their stuff and get it recorded, because after the voice blows out and goes, they have nothing of worth it seems. The guitarist, bassist, and drummer all get to keep doing the same thing they've always been able to do. So I get how it is a potential psychological unhinging if you will to go through losing ones voice when you are the singer. Thank you for at least telling us this story. To help understand the kind of person Ed truly was. A gentleman.

But Alex and Dave were close at one time and Dave and Mr Van Halen were very close he and Dave would hangout and talk for hrs .. Dave had a lot of respect for Mr n Mrs Van Halen and Alex has never forgotten that as he gives credit to Dave for getting Mr Van Halen to play Big Bad Bill with them and that song was written for him.. Alex is that type that once a fool fools on you you don’t engage the fool for if you do then you become the bigger fool… That’s where Alex is now in life……

If you look at the histort of EVH, he'a true artist that had to have his muses. This is not a criticism. EVH used to take friends of his, unrelated to the music business, on tour. It's probable they were fellow coke friends. (Coke, as inz Escobar's finest) I think he needed that constant outlet of people outside the band and the industry. I have little doubt Sammy Hagar was also a writing muse for EVH. So it doesn't surprise me EVH makes an email penpal out of the blue to vent. And i don't doubt one single word about his accusations of Roth. Roth is a nutcase. Wolf has been very disciplined in not saying too much but he revealed Roth did not want to do an EVH tribute show or tour because Roth did not like how much attention was not on himself. I like Diamond Dave the showman and frontman for the greatest rock n roll band ever......but David Lee Roth the human, is a complicated study.

Eddie was innovative in so many ways. I really think they needed Michael Anthony on Truth. There were so good tracks. Iove "China Town," "She's the Woman," and "Stay Frosty" is fun. I thought "Blood and Fire" was cool. I still listen to that album.

@@RockNewsDesk totally. The flavor changed. I love wolf. He is amazing. Like a Dave Grohl who can play lead. He's so good it's sick. I mean his solos are like a back priority and he still can do it. Great singer. He defined nailed MA in tour. But it's about the original lineup. The chemistry amongst young guys who made it.

Mike is a real classy gentleman but what he did wasn't the SMARTEST thing even if done innocently. He essentially SIDED with Hagar and THAT'S why he pissed them off. It was an act of betrayal in the Brother's eyes, pure and simple. I agree. NO excuse. All I hear are stories from those AMONG US of how much of a BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING Edward was when they met him.

Mike agreed with the brothers about Hagar quitting and not getting fired . The VH3 album promotion issue of THE INSIDE MAGAZINE had an interview article with the three original members all saying Hagar quit . In the interview with just Mike , the interviewer informed him that Hagar told him he quit because he didn't want to do the greatest hits album .

Ed was a burnout stoner who screwed himself. He should have gone the instrumental album path, like Eric Johnson, Satch, or Steve Vai, but he didn't actually know the musical bones, and probably couldn't jam with those guys. just a few gimmicks and high volume

Ed didn't like weed,loved speed coke preferably and in articles he said he gets to do whatever he wants doing VH albums.but he had to put up with singers.i would've loved if they ever did album they thought about doing after DLR split with different singers for each song .allstar.
