I'm 67, from Texas, and saw (and knew) a lot of the great guitarists in Texas - Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, and many others. From my teens on, Jeff Beck was always my favorite guitarist and I've sought out, and seen live, most of the great guitarists because they all played Austin.. I saw Beck live 6 times over the years and always walked away feeling like I had seen something other-worldly beautiful. I had just gone through a divorce after 20 years of marriage when Jeff died and his death hit me far harder than my divorce. It's stil a hole that will never be filled. He was still so vital at 78 - I just assumed that I would get another chance to see him. For me, he will always be the goat. To Jeff - R.I.P. and thanks for the soundtrack to my life.

There is no doubt about Jeff Beck's talent and mastery of the guitar, but what I love most about him is the joy on his face when other musicians take their turn in the spotlight. He seems to get inspired by what they do, it never seems like a competition, just a celebration of great talent. It takes a real master to set aside ego and just enjoy the playing of other musicians.

Still hard to believe he is no longer with us. He was one of the only guitarists that I couldn't wait to see what he was up to as you were guaranteed to hear something new and never done before. Jimmy Page when inducting him into the R&R hall of fame said something along the lines that Jeff just keeps getting better and constantly evolving. Most guitarists have a 10 year peak then will always be great, but that was their peak. Jeff was better when he was 75 than when he was 30, 40, 50, and 60. That is SO rare.
@robbiedaugАй бұрын
Being a long-time "lead" guitarist, (now 63), i think Beck's unique style was developed around the errors he played while playing outside the box. Make a mistake, play it twice and it becomes a "cool" lick. What Jeff first liked about the guitar was the "tricks" he could do with it - his words. One, like Jeff, doesn't initially sit down and work out such solos, they are jammed on first until he finds something good and then it begins. Tricks are found through making errors. A genius makes the errors work in his favor. So, kiddies, don't be afraid to jam with your eyes closed with your camera focussed on and recording your fretting hand. You might find some gems.

What makes Beck stand out is, who else can have such a long career on major labels while playing almost nothing but Rock instrumentals? Several guys make great albums of instrumentals - Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Danny Gatton, Yngwie. But because they weren't in bands that produced hits, they don't get mentioned among the greats. But Beck does get mentioned alongside Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Van Halen, and SRV.

We both got to see him live together when he toured with Paul Rodgers a few years ago. It is a moment we will both cherish for the rest of our lives. He was amazing beyond the definition of amazing. This is a testament to how little the public reveres Jeff Beck. Nothing but comments of negativity here. Despite all the praise from great musicians in this video or what great guitar players have said in interviews, both written and video, or things they have posted on their Instagram Account (and the list is very long and comprised of other top level guitarists) Jeff Beck will never get the respect he deserves. I have seen JB in concert 11 times over the span of 5 1/2 decades. I always left with my jaw on the ground. And I have seen a long distinguished list of guitarist in concert: Jimmy Page(Led Zeppelin era) to Michael Hedges, Allan Holdsworth to Paco de Lucia, Tommy Bolin to Gary Moore, John McLaughlin to Eddie Van Halen, Al Di Meola to Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan to Alex Lifeson, Joe Satriani to Robin Trower, Steve Vai to Lindsey Buckingham, Eric Clapton to Zakk Wylie, Mark Knopfler to George Lynch, Roy Clarke to Slash, David Gilmour to Randy Rhoads, Brian May to Richie Blackmore and I could continue on and on. No one has had a sense of melody, the way to bend notes, the sense of space, the unreal technical proficiency, the ability to move from one genre to another, manipulate a note with pure emotion, and when he felt like the song called for it- shred. If we were discussing Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen there would be nothing but praise; praise they in some cases did not deserve. RIP Jeff Beck there are people on this planet that appreciate everything you did and if there is a Guitar GOAT it is you.

@@jerrytoro4739 according to Kenny Vaughn when Hendrix came to England he want to see Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. Hendrix wanted to know how Jeff was getting the feed back sounds from his guitar. Also, Billy Gibbons was asked by Hendrix how was Jeff Beck was getting the sounds from his guitar! Confirmed by Kenny Vaughn that these guitar techniques were used by Jeff Beck way before he arrived in England. What Jeff wanted was a telecaster but they weren't readily available in England at the time of Jeff's early development. Hense his use of Les Paul guitars. So, when Jeff finally started using a telecaster, he could get the elusive sounds he'd been wanting from telecasters. With his finger style technique and his mastery of the Wammy bar and volume control techniques he developed a style of playing that NO ONE else could copy. So when Jeff initially commented on Hendrix affect on him it was mainly because of his inability to purchase a telecaster like Jimi was using. Jeff always conceded that other guitarists like Hendrix had something unique about them but he would learn from them and praise them for it. BUT, through Jeff's pursuit of excellence in guitar techniques he overtook them all. The biggest shame was that Hendrix passed to soon. Neil from Sydney Australia

Could have fooled me he was fighting his guitar ! ! ? 😳 Never mind the films - Saw him 3 three times live up close - 😮 Mindboggling , and he was relaxed - Ridiculously technical and making it look super EASY ! ! Channeling from somewhere else - just flowing out Mr. EARS ! ! Seriously UNTOUCHABLE ! ! ! 🌝

Jeffs Belaro was excellent, 1966, however Purple Haze , 3rd Stone, 6 were 9, Voodo Chile ,Machine gun...primetive equipment.... All unserpassed by anyone, even, SRV, or Eddie...come on now...did Mr Beck sing or even write lyrics? Mr Beck basically walked out on the Yardbirds when touring got tuff... Jimi lived the Chitlen Curcuit, and did approx. 600 shows from 1964 to 1970. come on now..God Bless Jeff Beck live his work...thanku

Uhh I don't think so. SRV surpassed Hendrix by a lightyear in tone, technique, soul/feel and improv. It was no big deal for Stevie to do Hendrix stuff better than Hendrix.

An amazing guitar player without doubt but a better guitarist than Rory Gallagher? No way.

Jeff Beck was one of the best. But Jimi completely changed how a guitar could be played and sound. He also had an electric scene personality AND wrote a lot of music that didn’t sound like anything else.

There was no one that could approach his abilities. He could hit 1 n I te and systain it fir as long as he felt like. He could pkay hard rock riffs one minute and mellow songs that were absolutely beautiful the next. He akways made ut look effortkess. I saw him live several times and he was on another kevel. There will never be another like him fir sure

Doesn't matter, making good albums is what it's all about, Roy Buchanan, Robert Cray make great albums.

I saw him in concert once in the 1970s. Wasn't impressed.

Yeah…I saw Hendrix twice……he was sloppy and repetitive….terrible sharp tone…I didn’t even stay to the end of the 2nd show…

There is no "best." Different music, styles, etc. If there was a best, it would be Stevie Ray Vaughan as per Clapton, B.B. King, and me. :)
