Shout out to my friend Alison who introduced me to Jane's via this live demo back in high school, senior year, 1989. Went out and found my own copy, then bought Nothing's Shocking, and spent the rest of my days in that place playing them in my ears as I walked the hallways. I don't think I would've made it out of there if I hadn't. After high school, I went to as many JA shows as I could, and connected to so many amazing people along the way who also felt the band in their soul. Idk where Alison is today, but many thanks, babe 💜

I first heard this song when watching the science fiction movie *Alien Nation* way back in 1989. It had a scene in a bar in which Janes Addiction was up on stage singing _Sympathy for the Devil_
@Ironhandjohn2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it was a female Newcomer doing a strip-tease to the song. She was spinning around poles while the gauze she wore unraveled behind her. Not that the teenage me would have rewound the scene to watch it a few dozen times back when it came out on VHS...

This live cover of Sympathy for the Devil caught me up to the point of consider it even better than the Stones original or the one Guns and Roses did. Of course one can't forget to mention those bongos and their rythm. But then there is the decading point Perry Farrell and his voice give to the whole. Kind of a brilliant theater, would I say he does. He really goes within the character he personifies. If had to imagine the devil way of being or behaviour and his voice, this is it. Got the record and it also made me look for more of the same quality in Jane's Addiction cds. The David Navarro guitar is also so good, that I had to look for more of his guitar playing too. The whole cd is worthy be it only for this cover. And it seems quite spontaneous, as if they were just playing for a bunch of friends and fans... ❤️👍🤗

I HATED the Guns & Roses version of this song; Axl Rose’s vocals ruined an otherwise solid jam.

True story. I saw them in 1991 at Lollapalooza. They were the last to play so it was at night when they hit the stage. It rained most of the afternoon at the fest but the bands still played. By the time Janes Addiction played, it stopped raining but the dance area was two feet of mud. Nobody was out there, but in stead, they were crowded in front of the stage like cattle. When they busted-out their song *Summertime Rolls* my girlfriend and I walked out into the mud with our combat boots on and slow-danced, holding each other. We were the only ones out there and the spot light shined on us. Perry gave us props in the middle of the song. That night was dope. I miss Heathur. I should've married her, but back in those days we were fancy free.
