Augustus Toplady wrote this brilliant old hymn. First a fan of Wesleys, he ended up becoming their enemy! And yet his classic hymn was probably influenced by a Wesleyan hymnal.

1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me wrath and make me pure.
2 Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All could never sin erase,
Thou must save, and save by grace.
3 Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless, look to Thee for grace:
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

You should do Praise ye the Lord the Almighty, the King of Creation. It's German 17th century, by Joachim Neander. The Neanderthal man fossil is named after him, this is an interesting story. This icon of evolution is named after a creationist hymn writer preacher. The Neanderthal man is a perfectly normal post-flood human who lived to a great age. It is also the world's best hiking song. If you find the history you will realize why I say that. I love that hymn it is my favorite.

Me too. This "rock" version sounds a lot like Jerry Lee Lewis came up with the melody. I won't name the title of the particular song this sounded a lot like, but I go for the original hymn as it was sung. IMO, I think we don't do these great and profound hymns any favors by messing with them. It's like we deny the power of those hymns and the holiness of God to try to be "relevant" to an unholy world. If you want to give it a "modern" sound, then write your own lyrics.

I sang Rock of Ages this week. One of my al time favorites. The simple yet deepest of biblical truths: "Not the labor of my hands Can fulfill Thy law’s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone." "Oh, the blood of Jesus"

On our way to Ontario from Alberta, Canada, in 1977, we came to a wall of beautiful rock, and stopping in a small look out space, my husband and I got out and burst into this wonderful hymn. The sun shone on the rock, and the hymn gave a further definition to the words that we sang, What a Saviour, hidden in His love, safe in Him the Rock of ages cleft for (us)!

It was a small country church…. maybe 30 of us were there on Sunday night when service was merely an hour of picking songs from the hymnal at random by those attending. My grand aunt’s voice would soar above all as our voices in unison sought to chase her praise to her God. Aunt Neene now has a perfected voice to go with her quiet personality and that wonderful smile behind which an amazing voice stood ready to soar with praise the her Strength. I so miss those Sunday night services. They still soar in my ears as I hear these lyrics.

Thank you Luke for this excellent clip. I grew up in a Methodist church enjoying the riches of their excellent hymn book. My parents had good voices, my mom with a rich contralto and my dad a solid bass and when my voice broke I had the wonderful privilege of being able to sing the bass parts with my dad. For Rock of Ages we sang the alternative tune which was a bit more sonorous but equally lovely. I miss the gravity of the great old hymns and find most of the "cut and paste" songs currently popular rather anaemic and uninspiring. But that's me I guess. Please keep doing what you're doing!

I'd have to say these hymns are the bedrock of my praise and worship from the time Christ saved me until now well over four decades later. The hymn writers have given the church a rich heritage. Hi Luke, thanks for the story, we enjoyed it. Well my aunt died of cancer last month in S.A. She refused treatment and had ended up with open weeping painful sores. so this is for her. Believe it or not, I only came across the hymn last week whilst reading by chance a report about the SS London in 1866. So few of us get to where we're going in life, so here's what the journalist said: 'Before the ship sunk her fate was inevitable, and on the captain announcing that there was no hope a marvelous resignation pervaded both passengers and crew. There was no frantic excitement or utterance of despair. A calm heroism, which ennobles and hallows the catastrophe, was shown by everyone, and these 200 human beings, who but a few days before had left England for their new home full of hope, met the death which stared them in the face with a spirit which disarmed it of all its terrors, and which will make their memory dear to their countrymen through all time.' (From a compilation by John Mayhall 1874.) They were heard singing 'Rock of Ages' by the 19 survivors in the lifeboat until the sea silenced them.

I first heard this song later in my Christian walk because I didn't grow up in church. But, when I was studying in the Bible where Moses asks to see God's Glory. So God hides him in the cleft of the Rock and His glory passes by. I felt like the Lord put on my heart that the Rock is Jesus. Because of our sin, we will die in the face of God's glory. But, because of Jesus, our Rock, by His blood, we are hid in Jesus and our sins are washed away, so we can enter into the presence of the Lord. So when I hear, let me hide myself in thee, it is a picture of how God hid Moses in the cleft of the Rock & does the same for us✝️🙌
