In 1967, I found myself in Salt Lake City. I could pause my journey & get on a later bus with my ticket. I thought that I’d like to visit the Mormon Tabernacle. When approaching the building, I heard voices singing. I went in, made to leave again & a woman at the door stopped me, said that I could stay. It was a truly uplifting experience. The Tabernacle is huge. The voices reverberated around the building. An experience that will stay with me until my dying day.

An amazing piece of hymn music. Takes me back to my childhood days in the 1970's when schools were closed on recess & a local radio station played hymnals in the late mornings. I looked forward to the beautiful popular hymns. The music then would be playing in almost every house in the street as one walked the streets. Unforgettable.

Same as me, my parents were the Methodist Religious ministers. But I was converted to become as a LDS member when I married to the LDS member man. Even though, I'm not attending to the methodist but tunes of the methodist hymns still reminds me I'm a truly methodist.

Thou must save,, and Thou alone. Though my zeal, no respite know, all for sin could not atone. Out of all the wonderful hymns given to us, Rock of Ages touches my soul the most, My beloved Grandmother Emily ( my mothers mother) was laid to rest at its call. 1893~1973 A woman of deep faith in the Lord, a life of hard work and very little means, she never once complained of her lot, but rather rejoiced in it. So devoted to her one (William) husband that when he passed in 1948 she rode with his casket via steam train car the 125 miles back home from hospital. The very rails on which in life he was an engineer for many years for the Northern Pacific R. R. I would hope and pray that my Dear Lord has found an extra special place for such a woman.

I find it interesting that they left out the two middle verses. Here are the missing verses. Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's commands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die. Romans 4:5, Ephesians 2:8-9

You are right Fonzi, Mormons don't worship a cross, they worship Christ and His Father Jehovah (God). When they baptize people, they do it in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit...not in the name of the cross. They also focus on Christ's atonement and resurrection, not his grisly death.

Sometimes I feel like the Mormon Choir sounds too perfect. Don't get me wrong it's fantastic, but sometimes I just feel hymns like this need to have a bit of grit and imperfection. Gives it some character and humanity...coming from the heart of sinners crying out vs people up on a pedestal perfecting every little detail.
@arnie36315 жыл бұрын
Mr. Extreme who says it’s perfect? The women’s voices are not properly placed. Their soft palates are not raised enough so there is a raspy quality to their singing. The brass section also drowns them out. So there. They are not perfect. But they sound very spiritual, which is what is more important

Poignant and moving, but... something is not quite right about this choir's version. I swear there are two important joining verses that are missing; I've gone back to the hymn book of my school years to read it through. The hymn sung by the choir also seems much longer with verses omitted.
