I love rainbow obsidian. I bought about 10 kg of it off eBay a couple years ago and still haven’t done very much with it. Most of what I ended up getting might be better described as “banded” but there are some good chunks where the colors really do pop out. For the banded stuff, my thought is to make pendants and earrings from thinner slices so the transparent parts really stand out. Edit to add one thing I noticed when I used a metal strainer is that it can sometimes scratch up the finished pieces or otherwise leave metallic marks on them. I switched to using a plastic strainer that came in a salad spinner but a plastic colander would be another option.

Before I was born, my brother's favorite toy was a rock tumbler. I remember my mom talking about it. He was 14 when I was born, and your videos remind me of him. He's been gone for 26 years. Thanks for helping me remember.

Fairly new to tumbling and only done a couple runs using the generic tumbling grit. Can you please tell me what the powdered detergent is used for? Would soda ash work as well?

Do you keep your dirt like I do? I have been dry tumbling to crush up all my leaves in my years, so I can have some homemade dirt, creating it faster than nature would naturally.

You don’t need media in the first stage. The point of the first stage is to grind. The cushioning would slow the grinding process down. It’s best to add it in the in the later stages… 🙂

Why add detergent with grit? Also, why add ceramic media during stage one?
@si-gi-gi5174
@si-gi-gi5174 Жыл бұрын
The media is there so the rocks don’t just hit each other. It can help to prevent some breaking each other. Or at least to lessen the odds that they break each other. It also helps to fill the barrel more so there is less empty space. I am newer to tumbling though so maybe that’s not entirely correct

@@si-gi-gi5174it’s correct but in the first stage you want them to hit each other as much as possible to get a nice shape, cushioning them might slow down the process.. Usually you add media when you polish (in stage 3 and 4).

In the first stage fill barrel 3/4 full with just rock. This will allow the rocks to rub on each other with the grit between them, you don't want the to bang against each other and the weight of the rock does the work. In stage two the rocks will be smaller so you then add the media to cushion the rock. You may have to add a little more media in stage 3 but usually not much since stage 2 doesn't make the rocks much smaller just smoothing and removing scratches from stage 1.

The detergent softens the water as to make erosion less intense, creating a smoother surface. I use borax for this purpose, but detergent has the same water softening properties.

Oooo why add the soap tho?
@lenafay9189
@lenafay9189 Жыл бұрын
Grit is heavy and can kinda stay at the bottom. The bubbles cause by the soap helps the grit stay afloat to move between the rocks rather than at the bottom

Shouldn't you not be letting them dry out? Thought that increased chances of cracking

Softens the water, thus, giving a much smoother surface. Personally, I only soften the water at polishing stages. Borax does this job, as well.
