Staind is an American rock band formed in 1995. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist and backing vocalist Johnny April, and drummer Jon Wysocki. The lineup has been stable outside of the 2011 departure of Wysocki, who was replaced by Sal Giancarelli.
14 Shades of Grey is the fourth studio album by American rock band Staind, released on May 20, 2003. The album continues to develop a post-grunge sound seen on the band's previous album Break the Cycle, though the songs on 14 Shades of Grey have fewer pop hooks, focusing more on frontman Aaron Lewis's emotions. #Staind #RegrettingThePast #Rocked #14ShadesOfGrey #SoFarAway #AaronLewis #AlbumReview

I love Staind I love this album, though it is not Staind’s best. I’m sad to see it on here, but I’m still going to watch. I just wanna say Dysfunction and Self Titled are Staind’s best albums. And as much as I would I hate to see you do a regretting the past on Staind I’m glad you have done this, however I would prefer it have been on break the cycle just because of the song selection and I am interested to see your thoughts on them. I will say there is no way you can talk bad on ‘Zoe Jane’ , ‘Layne’ and ‘Blow Away’.

Another thing post-grunge lacks from grunge, bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AiC, and STP sang songs that weren't about themselves. Yes, they made personal songs, but they just as often wrote songs about other people and/or topics other than "My romantic partner stinks" or "people pick on me." It comes down to this question; would Staind, Puddle of Mudd, or Saliva ever sing "Rape Me", "Polly", or "Jeremy?"

@@ECL28E "Can't Believe" is actually Aaron's reaction to witnessing a sexual assault. But, its no Polly, because he makes the song about himself, rather than sharing the victim's point of view like Kurt did.

I'll also add that I believe there is a difference between liking albums and liking songs from the albums. I could never listen to 14 Shades of Grey completely through as an album because it all sounds the same. But when I heard the tracks individually on shuffled playlists, I learned to appreciate them all. There's something to relate to in each of them, which is why there is no shame in loving the music.

@@neneargueta8332 if you enjoy something the whole world says is 'bad' in a critical sense, then please, continue to enjoy it. I unironically enjoy lots of bad music (this album for exapmle). I recognize that I am alone in this, and just continue enjoying what I enjoy. I always hated the term "guilty pleasure" when describing a piece of entertainment. If you like it, and it isn't created to hurt or discriminate against others, then don't feel guilty about it. Fucking enjoy it. You don't have to explain it either. You have your reasons, just as someone who dislikes it has their reasons. At the end of the day, getting mad and arguing with people over tastes in media is not worth it. It's good to acknowledge critiques and make something better. But getting hung up over it is just bad for your health.

I think Dysfunction is actually a solid album with some genuinely good cuts on it. Tormented, despite the awful mixing and mastering, and being exceedingly edgy, is honestly a big guilty pleasure of mine because of how different it is from the rest of their discography (The hidden track "Funeral" is VERY out of left field for fucking *Staind*, especially.) ...That being said, the rest of their discography is whiny, pitiable trite that's nigh unlistenable, and I have the great displeasure of sharing my 5th birthday with the release date of "14 Shades of Grey". I'd fight Aaron Lewis. Fuck that boomer.

I can easily relisten to all of the pop-punk songs of yesteryear. They were energized and either pumped you up or made you wanna tear your heart out. Aaron Lewis sounds bored in ALL of his songs while the musicians are picking up the slack.

I'm more into Heavy, Power and Symphonic metal with some Thrash and Melodic Death. It's one of the reasons why I don't like nu metal: man children being angsty, bitter, edgy, whiners wanting to be famous. But hey, if you like nu metal, fine, but in my eyes it's not really true metal because of how simplistic it is and constant drop tunings. I've burned my bridges of it and not looking back ever. This to show why I regretted the past when it comes to this. I admit I intended to get 14 Shades of Angst. I wasn't able, I then forgot about it and good thing.

I thought you were gonna do "Break the Cycle", but after hearing them all (once), they're interchangeable. So I'm okay with it.

I was a big Staind fan back in the day and if this video was about "break the cycle" (as I initially misread) I might have been a bit more miffed. But 14 shades was really less than stellar so I can see your point. Also i was unaware of Aaron Lewis' personality issues so there's that.

I think the best way to sum up this album for me is this... I moved out of my parents house at 18. I left 14 Shades of Grey there, rather than take all my CDs to uni. Aged 33, 14 Shades of Grey is still in the same place it was when I was 18, now covered in dust.

Funny story, back in 2013 I was in the army & my unit came back from a deployment to Afghanistan. The general of the base I was at was doing a outdoor hunting show special where ‘celebrities’ would go hunting with soldiers. Aaron Lewis was the ‘celebrity’ that went hunting with this general. So the general got Aaron Lewis to sing some songs & play a little show for us when we got back to the base. This was during his country music tour gig and he had released a new album so he played songs from that album as well as give us that had come back from Afghanistan a copy of the album. I heard the songs he was singing when I got off the plane and before I could get my bags and get to my family I was given a copy of the cd. I threw the cd away because I didn’t like what I was hearing when I got off the plane. I’m not a fan of Aaron Lewis the Dysfunctional album was the only one from Staind that had any songs I liked and I remember you couldn’t ‘go awhile’ without hearing that one annoying song from Break The Cycle. Go to Afghanistan for a year and the first concert you see is Aaron Lewis, few weeks later me and some friends went to a Amon Amarth show that was much better and way less bitter

If Amon Amarth could play a concert for out troops, the battlefield adrenaline would increase by 1000%

Geeky Metalhead I remember when the plane landed at the airport and we were all getting off the plane and getting on the busses to go back to the base someone said something about the base general having a welcome home concert for us. Me and a friend of mine were thinking ‘who could it be?’ We talked about it on the bus ride to the base and we were hoping it would be Ted Nugent, think ‘yeah the Nudge would do something like that’ plus hearing Stranglehold and Cat Scratch Fever live would be cool. Me and my buddy were very disappointed, I remember when we got off the bus his words were something along the lines ‘oh no not the singer from Staind that sings complaints.’

Geeky Metalhead we appreciated that Aaron Lewis did the concert/show. On the other hand however he did because he was filming a hunting television show with the base general. He reminded us between songs to ‘checkout the upcoming show that will be broadcast on the Outdoor channel and that it’s available on dish network.’ Also the show was sponsored by the Outdoor channel and dish network

2003 was also the year that albums like A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step, Motograter's self titled, and Mushroomhead's XIII. Also, Price to Play was used as the theme song for WWE's Vengeance 2003 PPV. That PPV introduced me to this album and, apart from Price to Play, I was massively disappointed when I heard it. 2003 was weird. Both for Music and for WWE.

Speaking as someone who loved the whole nu-metal post grunge rap rock scene back in my high school years... Yeah, even I didn't like Staind. I liked "So Far Away", but that was about it.
