Another great episode. I had this album too in college, but I had the jacked up physical release and as a result, I always had a hard time getting into a lot of the songs, save for L'via & Widow. When I get a chance, I'm spinning Frances again to get a fresh perspective on it. No joke, these Favorites episodes are some of your best work. Your passion and knowledge of the artists and music really shows through in these. Speaking as someone that went to religious schools and got a lot of weird looks for being a rocker (I even had one professor call me a Philistine!) I can totally relate to your story here as well. Music was sometimes an only solace in those darker times. But again, terrific work. Seriously, I'd love to see more of these. Keep it up, man!

The jacked up physical release is why I just own the album as a digital release. It's a shame the label execs didn't just release the album as a double album and if they really had such an issue with Cassandra being long, they should have cut it by the movements and not the messy 8 pieces.

The Mars Volta has always been an intimate favorite of mine ever since I stumbled upon it in high school. It's a hard band to talk about, for sure. Their work oozes talent and creativity from every imaginable angle, and I'm so glad I watched this review. Excellent breakdown of Francis the Mute. This review made my day. To those who haven't heard TMV yet, put it on your music bucket-list asap. Once you've listened to them, it's IMPOSSIBLE to forget them.

We're the same age and this album will always carry us through life way beyond the nostalgia. Cygnus... Vismund... Cygnus makes me laugh out loud in how awesome this "track" actually is. The start of something creative, beautiful, disastrous, chaotic and hypnotic. The Mars Voltas two first debut LP's will and SHOULD be remembered until the end of time. I know, you know it...

This is one of two albums (the other being Welcome to the Church of Rock and Roll by Foxy Shazam) that I can listen to twice in a row and not be tired of it. The music is so dense, so involved, so complex. It's incredibly fun to drum to, and it introduced me to my drum hero Jon Theodore. This is my favorite album of all time, and I'm so glad that you made this video. Initially, I saw this video and was like, "WTF is this." I didn't like it at first, I'll admit, but something kept drawing me back to it, some intangible quality to the music that fascinated me. Slowly but surely I warmed to it, and eventually I liked it enough to purchase it on iTunes. I listened to it on a long car ride and was blown away. The combination of the imagery of the woods and small towns we passed and the freak-out that is this album was almost a religious experience and I've loved it ever since. I can't thank you enough for introducing me to my new favorite band. Hats off, dude, hats off.

I've never heard of anyone who actively dislikes The Mars Volta, but I don't think I'd heard any of their music up till this point. They seem to be something people that become sick of one or any genre over the years seem to really appreciate, that being said some of these clips definitely had me thinking "calm down" or made me feel like these guys brains are made of cocaine. I did KZbin At The Drive In once, but wasn't particularly blown away. As long as I've been making my own music choices I've identified most strongly with punk or at least punk influenced/derivative music. I think at the time I just wondered how far from punk The Mars Volta might be, like former skramz kid Steve Aoki.

Oh boy, i remember when i discovered TMV, it was almost 2004 i was 13 and at the time i was struggling to define my identity as everyone did, and i back then nu metal was beginning to fade away and the emerging garage/pop/punk was on his way, i've heard a number of new bands at the time, figuring out what was new, and then, one day i was surfing trough the tv channels, and then a video starting playing, it was Inertiatic E.S.P from de-loused, and after that i knew that i was listening to something exceptional, a few days after that, with my savings i bought DLITC and after that my musical perception of popular music was never the same. they influenced so much in my own persona, in the way i acted, my thoughts, i used to write weird stories all the time, inspired by music, movies, or whatever event i heard happened. they were one of my favorite bands back then (and my favorite new band at the time) and i am sure that it'll will take a long time before we get something so amazing and visceral from any new band. I really loved this video, you made me go back to some of my favorite memories

I love Omar, but I can think of someone who's been even more active than him, up until recently. Buckethead is a force in music, and truly a guitar god. Dudes been playing professionally since the 80s. I believe he's at 251 albums, including a "Pike" series of 30 minute albums that start at "Pike 1" all the way to "Pike 234". That being said, Omar is still a beast. He's pretty unmatched in songwriting for our generation. I love the Mars Volta I hope they have a reunion some day. Great memories listening to Frances the Mute, one of the best albums of all time imo.

Hi man, great video, this is for me one of the best albums of all time, but it is a shame that you never named the great drummer that The Mars Volta had have at that time, Jon Theodore. I think that his departure of the band marks a inflection point, and they lost something on the music that they never got it back.

Man, not only is this a great dissection, but a totally relatable story as well. The Mars Volta damn near shaped my music taste in high school. I was big on nu metal bullshit and I remember hearing Tetragrammaton for the first time, unknowing that music could sound like that. I was really sold on Bedlam, it's the album that got me into them and then I moved backward in time toward their first album. They quickly became my favorite band, and I agree, Cassandra Gemini is a damn masterpiece. Easily my favorite song of all time.

I too got into TMV with Deloused in high school when I discovered prog music. I thought they were one of the most unique bands at the time, loved that album. When Frances the Mute came out, bought it day one, and I didn't get it. I was disappointed because it didn't sound like Deloused pt. 2. Didn't listen to it for a while until when Bedlam came out. Went back to listening Frances and the more I heard it, the better it got. Frances is one of my favorite albums now. I didn't "get it" until I was older and now I appreciate this album in all its glory.

This one, along with the first song of "The Bedlam in Goliath" were my introduction to the Mars Volta. I thank a great friend Jose who showed me the band, especially since he said my hair was like Omar's. It took me a long while to get into the album because of the long interludes but I was able to manage, and hell, it's probably the reason I'm able to listen to lengthy songs.

If you did one about The Bedlam in Goliath...pretty sure no one would be upset. Metatron...Goliath...and collaboration with John Frusciante? What is to hate about that album. While you made great points for this earlier album, this one about sitting around a Ouija board and dealing with evil spirits... " I am legion said the pen"....What?!?!?!?! People even gave it a new label "Funk Metal" (being a senior in high school just figuring out my own style on guitar, I remember many bands riding on the backs of this new moniker ) Just another great album by this experimental band! Would love to see a video on your thoughts on that album.

Cedric and Omar are currently now in the band Antemasque. Have you heard their debut album? If so, what are your thoughts? I just rented it from the library and I can't stop listening to it!

I love the Mars Volta. I was actually introduced to them with the Frances the Mute album. I remember being so excited to play L' Via L' Viaquez when it was on one of the Guitar Hero games since I can't play the guitar in real life. Great review! It was informative and fun to hear how it played a big part in your college days.

My intro to Mars Volta was actually L'Via from back on Guitar Hero: World Tour, the song is so insanely diverse (as is the album as a whole) and the song goes from heavy rock to laid-back and chill and it's fucking fantastic
