So... I accidentally recorded to the censored version, y'all. I noticed about 2 or 3 tracks in and kept going rather than starting over. L on my part. I did say I was gonna focus on the production and not the lyrics, so mission accomplished? Be sure to leave your rage in the comments 😂😂

I think that’s what added to the overall better listening experience to the album, I remember the night or day it dropped Travis dropped the track list with no listed features and I was confused as hell, then about 5 songs in I realized he did that to add to how unexpected each feature was which made the listening experience better personally

fun fact since you mentioned the mixing: this album was basically entirely mixed and mastered by Mike Dean in his signature warm and blown out style. It actually took him so long to complete, he was still working on mixing the album up until the very minute of release, which is why there was a famous mistake on the original release of the album where NAV's verse on Yosemite was mixed WAY too quiet on accident. Although it was fixed in the same night, many reaction channels and other eager fans were waiting for the album drop and encapsulated the amazing moment forever in their videos.

I remember when that album first came out I took this girl on a date and I played that song while we were driving there and I was explaining to her how it was about Kylie Jenner because I was trying to make it relatable to her seeing as she didn’t know who Travis was, but obviously she knows Kylie. Anyways, she proceeded to bash the song and then turn it down. Needless to say that was our last date. 😂

Bob, your assessment on the production being the forefront of the album is completely true. A lot of people say that out of any artist there is, Travis is the most able to use his voice as an instrument even when giving full on verses. The sound and vibe is all that matters in Travis's albums.

Wow the censored version really butchers Sheck's "FUCK THE CLUB UP" chorus on No Bystanders haha. This album was momumental when it came out. None of the features are listed in the track titles, so when it dropped it was insane listening through and hearing all the A-list cameos! Up there with Rodeo for me as Travis' best, but certainly a different vibe.

As a side note with the unlisted features, having all of them visible to me prior to listening to the songs would kill a lot of the hype and surprise behind them. A major example being Skeletons; I went in expecting it to be a solo Travis song. Immediately wowed by the Kevin Parker production, Weeknd backing vocals, Pharells contributions, they all add to the soundscape rather than truly "featuring". Just something I thought was interesting in comparing first listens!

btw the album is called Astroworld because it was heavily inspired by a theme park called Astroworld which used to be in Houston when Travis was younger but shut down. Ps. I don't like a lot of drake shit but most people agree the Sicko Mode feature is very good (including me). U should really do the project Without Warning by 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Booming. Metro is one of the best Trap porducers and this was a surprise drop with both rappers having some of their best performances in the songs, it is also pretty sure and would get u into some more Trap.

Drake’s contribution on sicko mode is kinda overrated ngl, obviously he helped the song a lot from a marketing standpoint but the only good thing he offers in the song is the intro (which is actually a very good verse), but his second verse is pretty average. The middle part of the song with Travis, swae, and the samples are what really make the song great in my opinion. I never get why people act like Drake carried the song.

Bob, you need to dive more into Houston hip hop. What people outside of Texas don’t realize about this album is how much Travis is paying homage to the city. Astroworld is the name of the theme park we grew up going to in downtown before it was closed in the 2000’s. The cover of the album with Travis’ head is a reference to the entrance of the texas cyclone, which was a rollercoaster in Astroworld that had a giant cowboy’s head with the mouth as the entrance (you can look at the photos online). RIP Screw pays respect to DJ Screw and the entire screwed up click. He samples classic houston hip hop tracks throughout the entire LP. He samples and/or references Fat Pat, Big Moe, Lil Keke, and makes references to Missouri City, the beltway, Barre Baby, etc etc etc. These are very specific, intentional references that are close to those from Houston but may go over the heads of the common listener around the US. This album is about home. With that said, Travis’ sound is unique to himself. It has similarities but does not sound like traditional H town rap. Houston hip hop is VERY distinct (especially DJ Screw tapes) and is extremely influential. Def recommend diving into it at some point on your journey I was born and raised in Houston so I may be a bit biased….

Bob - the strings at the end of Coffee Bean were created by producer and artist Johan Lenox. He met Mike Dean years ago when Johan adapted many ye songs to Johan's trademark orchestral background. So "Yethoven" was created. This caught the eye of Mike Dean and Dean eventually brought on Lenox for the Coffee Bean strings outro. Brilliant stuff. Wish he was credited on the Genius page.

smiled when i clicked youtube on my bookmark bar, and the first thumbnail in my 8 recommended vids is this. Was a senior in college when this drop, went to the Astroworld tour, the whole story arc and auteur-like vision on how detailed he wants his re-imagined world to be presented. The crew and retail workers all had Travis Scott "STAFF" shirts to work in, like a carnival or astroworld would have, even suspending a rollercoaster above the crowd. In true Cudi and Kanye taste, Travis conceptual vision is unique/fresh/real to him/doesn't stray for the "it" sound.

Bob u need to keep in mind that the purpose of this album is to hop in a ride with travis. Astroworld used to be an amusement park during Travis’ childhood wich closed and reopened again some years ago with the help of Travis Scott. So with that being said, when listening to this u feel like you are in a rollercoaster and the transitions are impeccable. Hope with your next listens you will enjoy the album even more than u did! Thanks a lot for the reaction, definitely one of my favs(and thanks for reading this essay if anyone did:))

Sicko Mode may be one of the biggest hip hop songs of all time in terms of popularity, also about expensive clothing, there are some brands where you buy an expensive piece and it will last you a lifetime. Obviously that's not what is really going on in hip-hop culture, but you can definitely buy a $3500 coat and it being a worthwhile investment

That checks over stripes line on sicko mode refers to the nike check over the adidas 3 stripes. That line caused drama between Ye and Travis when it came out because Ye was representing adidas at the time, Trav was supposed to be Ye's friend, but had Drake on his album dissing adidas

Hello Bob, I've been watching you since WLR, and I need to say that I love your reaction videos. When watching these, I get a feeling that we're sitting in a room together, and reacting to the music. Love your opinions about the music, even when its really experimental (WLR, Die Lit...), or it tells a story (TPAB, GKMC..). I feel like we're sharing thoughts, and sometimes i even catch myself talking to the screen. :D I've been awaiting this video since Rodeo, and it's finally here. Thank you for your great content. Sending love from Czechia!

Drakes verse was a diss to Kanye..talking about seeing Kim and looking around for Ye in the valley. Also a dis to Adidas which Drake was gonna be on until Kanye told Push about Drake Adidas roll out with his son. So that filed and he signed with Nike instead. Lot of subliminal stuff.

He needs to go through NWTS first because IYRTITL is all braggadoccio. NWTS is the pinnacle of Drake's songwriting and rapping. Its also his most grounded record. I think Bob will appreciate that Drake. Much like Jon Denton did. JD used to meme on Drake until that album.
