fun fact since you mentioned the mixing: this album was basically entirely mixed and mastered by Mike Dean in his signature warm and blown out style. It actually took him so long to complete, he was still working on mixing the album up until the very minute of release, which is why there was a famous mistake on the original release of the album where NAV's verse on Yosemite was mixed WAY too quiet on accident. Although it was fixed in the same night, many reaction channels and other eager fans were waiting for the album drop and encapsulated the amazing moment forever in their videos.

Wow the censored version really butchers Sheck's "FUCK THE CLUB UP" chorus on No Bystanders haha. This album was momumental when it came out. None of the features are listed in the track titles, so when it dropped it was insane listening through and hearing all the A-list cameos! Up there with Rodeo for me as Travis' best, but certainly a different vibe.
@Zekew242 жыл бұрын
As a side note with the unlisted features, having all of them visible to me prior to listening to the songs would kill a lot of the hype and surprise behind them. A major example being Skeletons; I went in expecting it to be a solo Travis song. Immediately wowed by the Kevin Parker production, Weeknd backing vocals, Pharells contributions, they all add to the soundscape rather than truly "featuring". Just something I thought was interesting in comparing first listens!

btw the album is called Astroworld because it was heavily inspired by a theme park called Astroworld which used to be in Houston when Travis was younger but shut down. Ps. I don't like a lot of drake shit but most people agree the Sicko Mode feature is very good (including me). U should really do the project Without Warning by 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Booming. Metro is one of the best Trap porducers and this was a surprise drop with both rappers having some of their best performances in the songs, it is also pretty sure and would get u into some more Trap.
@Twofacex22 жыл бұрын
Drake’s contribution on sicko mode is kinda overrated ngl, obviously he helped the song a lot from a marketing standpoint but the only good thing he offers in the song is the intro (which is actually a very good verse), but his second verse is pretty average. The middle part of the song with Travis, swae, and the samples are what really make the song great in my opinion. I never get why people act like Drake carried the song.

Bob, you need to dive more into Houston hip hop. What people outside of Texas don’t realize about this album is how much Travis is paying homage to the city. Astroworld is the name of the theme park we grew up going to in downtown before it was closed in the 2000’s. The cover of the album with Travis’ head is a reference to the entrance of the texas cyclone, which was a rollercoaster in Astroworld that had a giant cowboy’s head with the mouth as the entrance (you can look at the photos online). RIP Screw pays respect to DJ Screw and the entire screwed up click. He samples classic houston hip hop tracks throughout the entire LP. He samples and/or references Fat Pat, Big Moe, Lil Keke, and makes references to Missouri City, the beltway, Barre Baby, etc etc etc. These are very specific, intentional references that are close to those from Houston but may go over the heads of the common listener around the US. This album is about home. With that said, Travis’ sound is unique to himself. It has similarities but does not sound like traditional H town rap. Houston hip hop is VERY distinct (especially DJ Screw tapes) and is extremely influential. Def recommend diving into it at some point on your journey I was born and raised in Houston so I may be a bit biased….

So in drake’s second verse on sicko mode, he was talking about kanye the whole time. They had a falling out at the time and they lived next to each other. That’s what he meant by “crept down the block, made a right” and stuff. Also i thought the “i took half a xan” line was really funny, since he’s literally describing the recommend use for people with flight anxiety, instead of the typical abuse in rap. Not a huge drake fan or anything but i thought that verse was decent.

Bob - the strings at the end of Coffee Bean were created by producer and artist Johan Lenox. He met Mike Dean years ago when Johan adapted many ye songs to Johan's trademark orchestral background. So "Yethoven" was created. This caught the eye of Mike Dean and Dean eventually brought on Lenox for the Coffee Bean strings outro. Brilliant stuff. Wish he was credited on the Genius page.

The song skeletons was originally intended to be on a Kanye album called Love Everyone after it was scrapped and it turned to ye. There is a version online where Kanye raps for about 4 minutes straight which was the original skeletons. You should check it out.

Well regarding the use of features on skeletons kanye did the same thing on all of the lights where so many artists were on the song but only had very small parts that elevated the song which I believe was what travis was going for in skeletons

It's a really interesting take with the Drake feature on SICKO MODE , I get what you mean with the comparison of his energy vs Travis' verse, but that song took over the world for a while and Drake's understated verse was actually the most well-known part any time that track was played. Man's just got a chokehold on the culture 😅
