No one really mentioned that the shock value of this album was off the charts at the time. He started the trend of not listing features throughout whole album and initially no one knew who was on the album except for the singles already released. He changed this album around 3/4 times post release for the sake of his perfectionism which people had not seen done with a hip hop album. He had a lot of buzz around the Yeezy brand at the time as well. Hearing certain artists who were difficult to get hold of (Frank Ocean, 3stacks), new artists (desiigner n.b everyone thought the sounded like Furture) and big producers who he had never worked with before (metro boomin) was massive and it created a crazy party atmosphere at his listening party. For listeners and longtime fans this was a rollercoaster experience which I think is best captured around time of release.

YESSSIRRR LETS GOOO EDIT: loved your reaction!!!!! enjoyed hearing this album from fresh ears again. It's such a different but interesting album and you just had to be there in 2016 when Kanye took over. It was a fun time. I went to his Saint Pablo tour in LA where he had the floating stage and I was there on the floor. One of the best nights of my life!!

Best reaction I've seen in a hot minute. I've understood this album but so much more was revealed as I listened to each breakdown. Also came up with my own opinions, had some small disagreements with what you had said, and then the answers were revealed to you through further listening. Great experience for the viewer to see your own growth of understanding as the album progresses. 20/10 album reaction.

amazing video man. along with what i think is Kanye’s best album to date. the albums cover art and it’s aesthetic, the timing, the era, where the hip-hop culture was at the time, the constant changes to the album, the tour and its merch, THE ROLLOUT, the madison square garden listening party / his yeezy fashion show. Kanye was in HIS PRIME with this album.

You missed the meaning of the pablo lines on No More Parties in LA. Pablo is meant to represent 3 aspects of Kanye: the artist life, the superstar life, and the family life. These 3 aspects are presented in those lines, in that order.

It took me an acid trip listening to this to get to an understanding that you got to on your first listen…makes me wonder how cluelessly and superficially I approach music, probably because I have access to such an excess of it. Great breakdown as always bro, love hearing your thoughts on these!

Man, I didn't think I could love this album any more. I thought it was a bit too long and there were some things that could have been cut. But you made me appreciate everything about it more, and realize it is perfect just the way it is. Including Lowlights, Facts, and even the second verse on 30 hours.

Really LOVED this reaction and commentary. I have to say this was the album of 2016 (imo). The eccentricity of this album really reflected the state of where I was in my life. I was 18 and confused about what path to go after graduating high school. I was so confused, often mad which was different from my usual self, and chasing/wanting the wrong things. After 6 years this still holds strong and takes me back. Luckily, I saw got to go to his concert before he cancelled the tour. I was in the pit and let me tell you the energy of that night is something I have yet to experience at another event. I remember getting goosebumps throughout the entire night, especially from freestyle 4.

Bro. When this album came came out it really was a crazy time to be alive. All the hype. Was in highs school at the time about to graduate. Kanye literally helped me/give me confidence to quit school as it wasn’t the thing I wanted to do. I took a leap of faith and now am in a good company with really good benefits/retirement. Kanye helped me believe in myself and my own choices. Thank you Mr. West 🙏🏽

The title is very important because it’s not even a duality he goes through in this album. It’s three experiences all represented by a Pablo (Saint Paul, Pablo Picasso, Pablo Escobar).

Bob, thank you for taking the time you did to reflect on "low lights". It's probably my favorite track to come back to off this album and I'm not even religious. Was so glad to see you had a similar response to the song and that you could explain why it was so powerful within the context of Kanye's narrative. I hadn't given the track much thought aside from the sound and the way it makes me feel, but you really added to my appreciation of it by contextualizing the message. You're the man, Bob! Cheers

such an amazing album front to back, i’ve been heavily into kanye since 07 and this is by far my favorite kanye album. to this day i feel like i haven’t heard something so futuristic with a gospel tone like i did with this album. i’m glad someone took the time to actually look into the lyrics, themes, and give a great reaction!

Kanye isn’t necessarily “distracting himself from the pain,” but he’s more-or-less distracted BY the pain and anxiety surrounding his mistakes and feelings of not being sure about himself, especially while he’s in private. I wish he would release Slave Name so I can continue to preach my Slave Name Theory. It’s the third part, the conclusion, to a trilogy of songs, including New Slaves, Saint Pablo, and Slave Name.

Awesome video! You should look up some of the backstories of the album's release. It will help explain a lot about the message and lyrics you might have missed. For example, in saint Pablo, in the last verse he talks about Apple and jay z because Apple wanted exclusive album rights for the release of the album, and they were going to pay him a ridiculous amount for it. Still, Kanye ultimately decided to release the album on TIDAL, which was Jay-Zs streaming service. Kanye gave up money to stay with his real friends even though he was in debt at the time.

I think I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again, your reaction/reviews to albums are something I greatly look forward to there’s an honest tone throughout every video I’ve watched (and I’ve been watching for a while now) but what gets me the most is that you can tell there’s an effort to understanding the music sometimes some albums don’t need to be understood rather than just listened to personally I’d say like Igor, but this is the first reaction/review to TLOP where I’m satisfied which is disappointing in a way because others listen to the album but they give little to no insight even if it’s a reach the attempt is still there. Anyways I’m excited for you to reach donda, personally I hate it, but I think it’s an important album in terms of why it was made, how it was made and what is going on with Kanye at the moment. As a Kanye fan thank you, and as your fan keep up what you’re doing a lot of us appreciate what you do.

Every Kanye album has a story behind it and this one might be my favorite. I won’t go super in depth because that would make this comment too long and there’s plenty of video essays out there that explain it better than I thought ever could. Anyways, Kanye going through a mix of all time highs and lows is perfectly represented here musically. Yeezy is off the ground and very hype yet he had to go into debt to get it there and he has no idea if it will sustain (I’m sure he thought it would but things were not looking good from the outside looking in). He finally had a wife and kids but he realizes that the lifestyle he grew accustomed to doesn’t mix well with the family life and he must try to fight to protect both. I’m sure by now you know about the 3 Pablo’s concept and him describing the album as a “living and breathing experience” instead of just admitting that it wasn’t finished upon release. The most interesting component in my opinion is the addition of the final song “Saint Pablo” months later. As this felt like him letting everyone know which “Pablo” he would choose to be going forward (or at least focus on the most). This album is not the first time his mental health seemed to be at a somewhat low point but it’s the first time it went from “this guy is pretty sad” to “I hope this guy gets the help he needs”. Also him being severely in debt during this album triggers laughter these days when considering his 7+ billion net worth today (according to Forbes)
