To remove the first-goal advantage and stop it from always being a 4-player game after any team scores 2 consecutive goals, you could make it so that if you score the whole enemy team comes back. That way after dropping to a 1v3 it would become a 3v2. That would allow a team to take a lead of more than 2 goals without winning automatically, or to come back from being down by 2 without only winning via a 1v3. EDIT: In general, the problem is that any time you score the ball without the other team being able to gain a player, you gain effectively a permanent buff ("up a goal and down a player", which translates to "tied but up a player"). This can only happen twice in the game; if the same team gets both (games 1 and 3), the other team can only win by winning a 1v3 or holding the 1v3 to OT (if that rule is in place). If each team gets one (game 2), then it's effectively just a 2v2 most of the time, with it occasionally switching to a 1v3 when one team scores, but usually quickly re-balancing (usually). Changing it so that a goal brings back the entire opposing team breaks the permanence of the buff, allowing the game state to vary more.

Start the game as a 2v2, with the third player on each team already in reserve. This begins the match with the post-goal state already in place, preventing the advantage. Then the total number of players in the game will always be 4, with everyone cycling in and out unless the instant win condition is met. Solves the problem without significantly changing the nature of it.

Proposal to help mitigate first goal advantage and make games more dynamic: when you get down to a single player, you can gain back a second player if you survive for x seconds (maybe 15?). This makes the 3v1 actually important and makes lead swings possible. (You could also be tactical with whether or not you want to bring in your second player since you'd still retain the rule of scoring as the 1 resulting in a win)

The first one to score in a 3v2 (as the team with 2 players) also gets an equal advantage as scoring first - if one team scores both of those, then they're at a huge advantage, but if both teams score 1 of them then it's an even game.

@@11342nh I think its a little more complicated than that but you will notice that in the first match that anytime they are in the 2v2 leth's team is up by a point.

It's every time a team scores while the other team still has 3 players (so the first goal, as well as the first goal in a 3v2 when you're the team of 2 players). The reason for that is that if the opponent's team is missing a player, you both lose a player and the opponent gains a player - but if the opponent already has 3 players, then you're only losing a player without giving the opponent another player, which makes those goals a lot more valuable.

If you ever do this again start as a 2v2 so that way the first goal doesn't offset the entire game. As is, the first team to score is at a huge advantage. If the other team ever ties the score, they will be down a player. Starting at 2v2 mean the first goal goes tot he 3v1 and then if the team of 3 scores it will be an even 1-1 and the teams will be even at 2v2 again.
