I don't know if this is common, but when I'm down by 1 or 2 with under 30 seconds left in Rocket League, I push my defender up to offense to try to force a goal. Basically the "empty net" in hockey. Also, the retro stadium in League is literally a hockey rink, with the goal pushed out away from the wall. The goal horns / songs in League are much more similar to hockey celebrations.

It's still very impressive to see just how quickly the goalie reacts to a puck appearing around a player in front of them when they have no clue that the shot even happened, even if they miss it, you can still see how quickly they recognized the puck and got moving towards it

@ryan I played goalie for many years, when there's a screen, your reaction time happens from when you first see the puck past the last screening player, often times only a foot away from you. It's basically just make your body big at that point and hope it hits you. You often don't have a clue how good of a shot was taken or where the hell it's going

Indoor soccer is probably most like rocket league tbh. I play a bit of indoor soccer as well as outdoor and the arena for it and rocket league are both very similar, prob more similar than hockey bc both of the goals are inside the wall instead of in the pitch. Also, theres no offsides, much more physicality, and faster gameplay as well as more vertical play with long clears and long passes. Just thought you should know :)

Adding to the rotation point, the three forwards rotate almost exactly the same way you should in rocket league. You’ve got one forward on the strong side, battling in the corner for the puck, while also looking to feed a pass to the forward in the slot for a shot down the middle, and another forward on the strong side but up the wall a bit, as a backup in case the corner forward loses their battle or they need to rotate. In the event of a rotation, the corner forward goes to the slot, the slot forward goes to the wall, and the wall forward goes to the corner.

I've always thought rocket league is more similar to hockey because of the average scores of games, soccer you see games that end 1-0, and 2-1 all the time, while in hockey there is a lot more scoring in each game just like rocket league

I think that's actually a region thing. Having watched both regions in RL you do get 2-0 matches quite often. Maybe European teams are better defensively and the US opts to focus offensively I'm not sure if it's that black and white. You do get football matches that end 4-3 etc every fortnight almost in England in one of the leagues but yes it is rarer. One thing I would like to see in RL is the hockey penalty system if overtime hits 10mins 👍

This is exactly why I am improving so fast at rocket league. I played hockey since 2nd grade and all of the moves and strategies were completely natural to me (like the passing to myself using the boards(walls)). I find that dribbling using the same exact faking strategies used in hockey, where you wait for them to change momentum and attack, and at that moment you adjust your momentum and position to fake them. A looooot like hockey. Rocket league feels so natural to me because hockey feels so natural. This is what I've been telling my friends but I'm glad i found this video

One of my favorite “mind games” in hockey would be Nikita kucherov’s no shot goals. The dude will come barreling down the ice at full speed, then instead of going top shelf with a nasty slap shot or doing something fancy like putting the puck between his legs to get the goalie to overextend. He will keep the puck moving laterally to confuse the goalie then fake a shot and pull the puck back then move his stick out of the way of the puck and fake another shot to get the goalies eyes to move and then all he does is just let it slide in between the goalies legs without him knowing what happened.

Hockey is my all time favorite sport, it's the only sport I can even stand watching, and I've watched over 1,000 hockey games, I've always played Rocket League like I'd play hockey, It's probably why I love RL so much. Edit - San Jose Sharks have been my team since their inaugural season, wasn't expecting to see any SJ Sharks clips in this, but thanks for showing the Penguins vs Sharks clips, out of anything else you could have possibly shown... Actually, there’s a version of soccer very common in cities called indoor soccer, where the pitch is inside a hocker rink. So soccer with walls. It makes it extremely fast and physical, so making it closer to rocket league than just regular soccer. Still think it resembles hockey, but wanted to point that out at least

Hockey is my favorite sport, and I used what I knew from it to improve my game early on. It's like having both goalies pulled most of the time (unless you're in Gold/Early Plat and people are still staying in full time in some games). My first crack into Diamond was in Snow Day.

There’s actually a thing called indoor soccer. There are circular walls surrounding it and people a lot of the time also use the walls to “Pass to themselves.” There are only about 5-7 people on the field, and since the the field is so small, the offsides rule isn’t in play unless the other player is really far down the field with no defenders in sight.

One thing you forgot though, rocket league isn't similar to 11v11 football, but 5 a side or 7 a side football played in 'cages' in the UK, of which rocket league almost exactly resembles

i mean to be fair a lot of plays in soccer can be used in callouts in rl, triangles and such. but indoor soccer if anyone else has a league like it, is basically soccer in a hockey-like environment, but unlike both sports there’s no offside edit: also in indoor soccer, it’s subbing is just like hockey, you can sub during a play

It's funny I played this game a little when it came out and loved it but I suck so i didn't keep up with it, but recently I somehow stumbled onto RLCS and i've become obsessed with it. I've never cared about any esports before and I assumed it was just because it was a sport video game, but then I realized what it was. It's hockey! Hockey is my favorite sport and for some reason I guess because RL is always referred to as car soccer I never really thought about it. Awesome video this really shows everything that was going on in my head.

5:23 in regards to rotations, there's actually a tactic called "cycling" when in possession of the puck which would be much more in line with the philosophy behind rotations.

In hockey you can dump the puck from a certain distance but you can't shoot it across the ice cause it will be icing and there is offside in hockey
