we used their dvd to build our rmh over two winters ago. it works fantastic and we love it. we use maybe a fourth of the wood we used to with standard wood stove. but the house is warmer and the "bench" is really nice. if you are considering doing it i recommend you do it !

It would seem that the fire is sucking warm air from the room.Cold,oxygen laden air could be brought in,from outside, through a pipe to feed the fire,reducing heat loss and increasing the efficiency of this nice setup.

Weaton labs tried that and Paul Weaton didn't speak too highly of the outside air intake. I was surprised, because I thought it would have been a good idea too.

Preheating outside the air might give an advantage. Outside oxygen intake, somehow, would improve the air quality inside.

Informative video--I enjoy your instructions and the time you have taken to learn and teach by trial and error. Can you explain why I haven't seen one person out of the very many people building these stoves using chimney flue pipe to build the heat riser? It must be my ignorance for lack of experimenting for not being able to figure out why no none is using the chimney tiles. They are fired (so they are better at heat resistance) so they should be able to handle the rough environment inside the heat chamber.
@village_video
@village_video 6 жыл бұрын
The gasses coming out of the stove aren’t very hot. Having a thin exhaust tube near the burn barrel helps warm those gasses and help them rise out of the chimney. We talk about this in the full length DVD.

I'm a filmmaker but my understanding is that you want the barrel close to the heat riser and the heat riser made of metal so it warms quickly and primes the hot stack effect that makes the whole heat pump system work.

ours is on a wood floor over a basement. reinforced floor and mass raised off of floor thickness of brick. our steel barrel can reach over a thousand degrees in 20 minutes or so if we want, but the floor never gets too hot. it seems to work very well
@michaelcee8348
@michaelcee8348 6 жыл бұрын
we do not run our stove at a thousand degrees. it "idles" at 500 to 750 or so on the top of the barrel. i have measured over 1700 degrees in the "burn chamber" tunnel. so not much ash and very little if any smoke it measures no more than 150 degrees where it goes thru the ceiling and usually less than that. the surface of the "bench" can be from 90 degrees at one end to 150 at the other

I am very interested in one of these and will be purchasing your DVD. I am concerned about the weight and if my floor will support it without some sort of foundation underneath. Was something like that done for this build? How much does that weigh?
@village_video
@village_video 10 жыл бұрын
They are very heavy. This one weighs about 6 tons. We do talk about that in the video. I think that section of video is on youtube. Just browse the channel. If you have a suspended floor you may be able to brace it, or you may need to pour a concrete slab. If your house is slab on grade (a concrete floor poured on the ground) then you're probably good to go. We recommend working with a contractor for a couple parts, this is one of those parts.

Considering that 1/3 of Americans don't have access to broadband internet, and those are the most likely to build these stoves, we opted to create a physical media. It's encoded at the high end of the data rate, so the MPEG2 compression is pretty low; it probably looks better than streaming a highly compressed "hd" netflix movie. Sometimes compression is more important than pixels. If there's enough interest we might consider a streaming version but the DVD is currently pretty menu driven. Honestly, we'll probably put our money into making a PAL version before a streaming version. Thanks for your interest! You can stream almost half of the DVD on our youtube channel for free.
@alexandreian
@alexandreian 10 жыл бұрын
Village Video You've got a great product, but maybe you are a little confused about your market? The people that don't have access to broadband internet are actually the *least* likely to pay 47 $ (+shipping?) for a DVD. Your target is young, semi-urban people, who own laptops (most of which don't have optical drives anymore) and handheld devices. If you don't have a streaming version available, they'll probably reluctantly buy the DVD and then rip it on their hard drives (further decreasing the quality) so that it can be viewed on devices without optical drives. Thanks for sharing this interesting knowledge.
@village_video
@village_video 10 жыл бұрын
alexandreian Thank you. You are absolutely correct. Our intended market are the people who are longing for meaningful transformation, the ones who are well equipped to consume media. At the same time, it is important for me to not technologically cut out those who have already taken the red pill, who are already building RMH's that often have issues, or are not operating at full potential. An initial print run of DVDs and establishing digital distribution cost about the same, but most digital sellers take a large percentage. We went with DVDs. How do you purchase your video content? Itunes, google play, amazon prime, vimeo, other?
