One of the most important figures in the history of science fiction, as editor of "Astounding Science Fiction" which became "Analog", John W Campbell introduced to the reading public Isaac Asimov, Robert A Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke, Lester Del Rey and Theodore Sturgeon.
But before he was an editor, he was a writer, and that is the focus of this video.

In a way this discussion is mind-opening to those whom aren’t big readers of Sci-Fi. I’ve listened to your video a few times thru and decided to go ahead and look into him some. I can definitely understand what you mean about Campbell. Instantly, at least for me, is: the ability or the willingness to separate the art from the artist. It’s a challenge to do that, but in the end the Truth is what matters. Now, after learning what I have about him- I agree as to maybe putting a spotlight on him… I’m not going to limit myself (and I’m glad you aren’t, either) I’ll take your recommendation in reading ‘The Moon Is Hell’. Also, great video intro to a thought-provoking video! Thanks as always.

You are right. There would be so many authors off limits if you did not separate them from their work. I’d be honest and say that his prejudices have more impact in his role as an editor- he once rejected “Nova” by Samuel R Delany because he could not conceive that his readership would tolerate a black main character…in 1968!

This was very interesting, Gavin. It does sound like he may have been a gifted scientist-or at least a student of science-and surely a talented editor, but maybe not a great writer. It does sound like he wasn’t very good at characterization if all of his characters are almost interchangeable. I sense you struggling with the idea that you don’t like his writing. You’re allowed! This was a really thoughtful and balanced discussion. 😊

Thanks Pat, I’m not usually comfortable being negative about something out loud! I suppose I had better get used to it with Campbell, as there are plenty of personal faults and professional misjudgments to add to the writing :)

@@GenreBooks23 I was in the middle of responding to your comment, and my screen sort of jumped and I lost the whole comment. Very weird. I do understand what you're saying. I don't like making very critical reviews in this forum. I'm having very serious second thoughts about judging the Book Tube Prize books going forward, but that's complicated too. I'll explain that to you another time. I don't know anything really about Campbell. I guess I should read more about him.

I love this discussion. Have not read this but it does sound pretty flawed 😂. Can’t deny that he introduced some pretty big hitters to the world though, even if he wasn’t that great at the storytelling. Fascinating video Gavin 😊
