The exhaust sounds too blatty to my ears, sounds cheap. The British car industry relied for many years on an American V8, the Buick 215/3.5 aluminum engine found in Rovers etc. Back in the day it was popular to put Ford 260/289 engines in Volvo P1800, there was even a book published on how to do it. Even Rolls Royce was not immune to American V8s, for many years they used what was basically a large Buick V8. GM used to have a 60 degree V6 2.8/3.0, a compact engine that would be right at home in a MX-5 engine bay. Racers could get them with aluminum blocks, I doubt they would be any heavier than a Mazda engine, mate them to the Mazda NC transmission and you would have a pretty good package.

@@3ducs the Rolls Royce/Bentley 6¾litres L-series V8 (1959-2020) was designed in-house by RR, not by any American company. It's sheer size and displacement may confuse other people into thinking of it as an American big block, but it was completely designed and developed by RR.
@3ducs3 жыл бұрын
@@subarnosinha8042 My research bears out your assertion, I fell prey to the earlier rumors. The only American connection seems to be with hydraulic tappets. RR came to America and bought machine tools to make them, but in the process improved metallurgy to make them more reliable. The American 215ci/3.5l V8 did turn out to be very popular with British manufacturers, it is a sweet little V8, the Oldsmobile version was thought to be the best of the American variants. @giulioposenato93323 жыл бұрын
Actually the engine came from the 80’s Mazda 323 Gt that was indeed turbo, they just removed the turbo and adapted it to be mounted longitudinally. That’s why you can turbo it without changing the internals until you reach the critical 280bhp (on an healthy engine). And then BBR turboed it again in the mid 90’s giving the 1.6 around 150 bhp.

I remember the 2.8i Capri motor slotted into my mates 2.0 Sierra pretty much "plug'n'play", and even the inner wings were pre-marked for things like the V6 airbox and fuel meter... you could virtually throw a motor into an engine bay, and it would fit itself back in the day!

This is what the MX-5 should have been like from the start. From the factory, it only ever got the performance it deserves with the recent 180 hp ND. I always thought the NA in particular should go like a baby RX7 (howzzat for a Mazda swap? Stick a wankel into an MX5!). This example appeals to me far more than an S2K, there is nothing wrong with the interior as far as I'm concerned, but the reason I never considered buying one (apart from insufficient crash protection) is the propensity of these cars to rust. As a restomod it would make sense, if they galvanise the chassis. Still, it looks like great fun to drive. BTW The Rocketeer is a truly wonderful film and although somewhat Disneyfied, I think I even prefer it to Dave Stevens' 1985 comic book, which is also fantastic and helped bring Bettie Page back from cultural oblivion.

Or Supercharge it - which i've done to mine and it offers bags of torque low down and just under 200bhp which is plenty for a car that size.

Fun fact about that "pre drilled oil feed line": Its not there to make it easier for the tuning crowd to turbocharge the car but because the original MX-5 came out of the Mazda 323 Turbo that was, well...how to put it? Turbocharged :D Edit: Colin Ashdown beat me by a whole day...

I hope this is California legal. I have had my beloved NA since 1992 and it is approaching 230000 miles. I am not concerned about resale value as I plan to be buried with this car, so it would be a nice option if the engine ever goes. Great review James. The reviews always are, but anytime with a Miata is extra special

Great review, I don't know about others, but I would much prefer to hear what it sounds like inside the car, for the driver, than it does to hear what a microphone sat next to the exhaust pipe picks up.

Great review, Rocketeer seems to have the quality and the appeal nailed down. That being said, It appears that the US home of Rocketeer is no more, so sad. Really want to see an example of one of these swaps here. Mazda " Miata " = BEST CAR EVER MADE ! I'm so glad I drive one of these little gems ❤, she will be mine until I die...

Interesting conversion. My brother in US was tempted by the MX5 turbo that Mazda marketed there but several of his Miata mates went down the super charging route that seemed to be popular there. I think they used to get about 250bhp out of them. But my question is about gearboxes. I have owned both the Ford ST24 and the ST220. Both had really nice V6 engines, very smooth and docile at low revs ( very little torque) but very enjoyable from 4000rpm and above. The ST24 came with a 5sp gearbox and the ST220 has a 6 speed box. I thought the 6sp would be better but I actually prefer the 5sp. Am I alone in my preference for 5 speed? The reason I feel this is because I love B road driving. The top gear is a cruising gear. On a 5 speed box I use 3rd - 4th for having fun on the B roads. On the 6sp box I need to use 4th- 5th and that's a cross plane gear change that is slower and less fun. Does anyone else out there prefer 5sp to 6sp for the same reason?

agree with nearly all u say (although the exhaust is too M3 carbon/ reedy / loud) - with all that induction cost & work, they should rely on that for the charisma for sure....which brings us to the elephant in the room... £20k+...? - Just think of your options...not least of which, a Grffith (not much bigger / heavier, far better interior, rarer, prettier, more durable, original, similar mpg I suspect, even better sound....oh, and way, quicker...with no lack of mid range torque...just squeeze the pedal at 40 in fourth and you wont be disappointed - it the other end you have the S2000, which is a bit of a rev monster - - cant help thinking that if u want a better powered Miata, try and achieve a budget, unmodified swap from, say, a 350z incl gearbox - sure the whole conversion could be done for c £5k inc all parts (and no vat) - less than 1/2 price, more torque, bhp, arguably better sound and far more power (choose from 260-340bhp)..just saying....Nice, but over engineered & over priced...

I agree with the sentiment Jay. I'm in the middle of sticking a GM Z32SE engine from an Omega into a Tigra B, despite given the option of using a Z16LET from a Corsa D VXR. It's the torque I want rather than that peaky shove up the rev range. Though not on the same level of driving experience you get with the MX5, the power control in the Tigra should be much more predictable than using a turbocharged engine.

Mazda could have put their amazing K-series 2.0 V6 in the MX-5. They did it in the MX-3 (albeit in 1.8 form) and it was amazing. Their K V6 is really a free revving, superb sounding, reliable, overbuilt and lightweight engine. It would have been perfect. Also, James, you should try a Mazda 323F Type-R V6 or even a Mazda Xedos 6 V6, rare gems that have almost disapeared but just unique experiences.

Aluminium block LS motors are cheap here in America. The weight is very similar. To the original cast iron, 4 banger. The only advantage I can see to this V6 is that it possibly will bolt up to the Mazda transmission.

Yep ever since my dad had an S-Type with that engine, it's been my dream to build something like a Nissan S15 with a single turbo AJ30 at around 500hp. You can buy forged pistons and other supporting parts for cheap and it's a relatively easy engine to tear apart. I just gotta save up some dough and get it done! Should be a riot!

Surprisingly, there are still a few engine swaps you can get away with on some more modern cars - the VAG 1.8T into pretty much anything from VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda being a good example. I've got a MK7 Fiesta ST-engined MK6 Fiesta and even that wasn't a terrible job although some fiddling with the wiring is necessary!

Good review Jay. Mine is a Mk1 and i have done a lot more to the interior (including Lotus sets), i also went for the five speed gearbox which has a taller final ratio. Prices seem to have gone up a lot, when i built mine you could have the kit without the engine for a lot less than £10k which was much more attractive. As you mentioned each conversion is going to be done to the owners own taste but you could have your dream MX5 for a lot less than £20-25k IMO. The other draw for me was that i wanted to do the engine swap and all the work myself, to just hand over money for a turn key would not have made me a customer. It is sacrilege you did not have the roof down (off), that is when the car is at its best. I can also attest to the car being fantastic on the track, as you alluded to its not about being the fastest car (although its far from slow), on the road and on the track it is fantastic fun with no aids to test your limits and the car gives you plenty of warning its going to lose traction. Hopefully i can still get you in my car when Covid is done.

I think he got some of the pricing wrong. Not sure as I am in the US. I bought my kit from the second batch. It it sitting in my basement, waiting for me to finish collecting suspension and plumbing bits. I am in a queue to get my AJ30 built up and balanced. It should be on the road this summer. Don't be jealous. But feel free to throw money at me to speed up the project. :D
