I recently wrote a placement essay for college that was about the importance of history and how it should never be forgotten, and this video makes that perfectly clear in a gaming sense. Too many people nowadays take old classics in gaming for granted and focus way too much on what technology has to offer us today. Video games are not always meant to be taken in a realistic approach, and that's exactly what the founding generations of gaming prove to us. They may not have had the greatest in immersive plot/story, which is why it's always good to use your imagination for once and think of how the in-depth story goes on your own, instead of having the game decide that for you. All the oldies had were "This is you; this is what you do; here's how to do it. Go!" They were simple, to the point, and ready for you to get straight in and play. No tutorial or instruction manual required. And that's what makes these games worth while. So what if systems nowadays have high definition graphics, immersive sound qualities, advanced controls, and so forth; They're not completely necessary to make a good game. Take a look at Pitfall for the Atari 2600, or The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Those games kicked some serious butt for their time, and in my eyes, they still do. Yet at the same time, they were simple. Rest assured, I'm not saying that today's games are bad in any way shape or form, what I am saying is this: give today's gaming assets a breather, and take some time to recollect on where history has brought us in gaming. We would not be where we are in today's world of gaming, if it were not for the creative minds of those before us. And for this reason, classic "old school" games will always be my favorites. A well-stated video.

Right on, man. I haven't been a serious gamer since the first Playstation (which could be one of the platforms that started the hard-core transition from past to present you allude to in your post). What I love about videos like this, is that it brings EVERYONE who has ever dabbled in the gaming world- into the joke. I vaguely know of some of the characters in the "New School" world- but I will ALWAYS know and have fond memories of- those characters that videos like this show in the "Old School" world. Creative stuff like this serve as a great bridging of generations. There's a great doc on Netflix called "Video Games: The Movie" that describes this whole thing. I'm not even a gamer (these days, anyway), and I absolutely LOVED that doc.

***** It really depends on what we're describing as old school, especially since I would go as far to say that the NES/SNES era of Nintendo are 'old school'...And I think somebody like Link would make short work of Chell, Freeman and definitely Trevor. As an artist, I feel as if games today focus a lot more on making the game look and feel like a piece of art now that the ability to do so is present. Turning up the difficulty setting, while presenting a nice challenge, might make it impossible for some to enjoy the art. Like paintings in a gallery, they are there for all to enjoy, but getting in the way of that deters people.

I'm sorry if you misunderstood me, but I actually agree with you. Games should absolutely, above all, be meant to be fun. My analogy with the painting was not meant to put focus only on the visuals, but rather to accentuate the fact that games should be made so that everyone can enjoy them to some degree (in a manner similar to how paintings can be enjoyed by just about anyone to some degree). If you go back and look at my original post more closely, I think you'll find that we are on the same page. I was only pointing out that games, like paintings, should have more of a mass appeal. Again, I am genuinely sorry for any confusion.

Back to the subject, I work in the 3D industry and I do understand the need for our work to be as awesome as it can be. It makes me proud when I do a great render, or back when I designed game assets I was happier than a child on Christmas day every time one of them turned out amazing. Visuals do make a huge difference in a game, but I see it as a trend nowadays to just create boring games that look pretty good. And I say "pretty good" because you can clearly see that most graphics have been made in a hurry by artists with arguable talent, even the main characters, so they look kinda bad, but then they throw in a new technology like direct X 11 and some powerful game engine that required the latest graphics card to run, and they sell it. That's why I don't play games anymore. The second I bought a really expensive graphics card that allowed me to play the newest games, I suddenly stopped enjoying playing them.

CerealKiller The old school games in this video are based before Zelda and Super Mario, the games shown in this where from the late 70s to early 80s, classic arcade titles that never ended it was all about getting the high score until you died. Super Mario bros and Zelda didn't come till after 1985 with the release of the NES.

Old school in this context is technically limitless because there is literally no end game to speak of. Zelda, mario, those don't fall in to "old school gaming", case in point: no one ever played zelda on an arcade machine. 8 bit games were not just old school, they were more or less the first school. On the other hand I think that was way too old school, even for me who played since the 8 bit era as a kid. I actually consider the time after 8 bit and before the "We must have graphics fidelity and easy to win designs", the most fun era.

Assassin's have hidden blades, a vast array of swords, a large number of personal firearms (mostly flintlocks over .50 caliber). Connor Kenway has the Aquila - a 30 gun (on each broadside) frigate with swivel guns (2), chainshot, flameshot, grapeshot, heavyshot and an iron ram. Edward Kenway has the Jackdaw - a 23 gun (per broadside) brig with 4 chase cannons firing chainshot, heavyshot, 2 mortar cannons, 2 swivel guns, a powerful ram and it (or she...) can release fire barrels from the rear which function as sea mines. Only got hidden blades? Yeah right.
