Thanks for sharing your experience with the bike. Had my Transalp 750 over 4 months now. Kept mine pretty basic with quick shifter, heated grips, hand guards, 12v socket plus the tank knee pad graphics and wheel rim graphics. I’m happy. Comfy. Good fuel economy. Love the dash. Going to opt for a centre stand due to regular cleaning from regular UK riding. I use it to commute and for leisure rides. Took my bike 1700 miles for the tyre noise to stop despite correct pressures used. I chose the Black colour as I just loved the stealth look. That’s subjective of course but I’m glad I did. It’s likely to be the bike that I will own the longest of any bike I’ve had. 👍

Perhaps it's a stupid question, but does the tyre noise reappears every time you change them, or is it just a problem with the stock tyres?

Another comprehensive report - thorough and easy to listen to, as ever. I largely agree with your observations, now at just over 3,000 kms on mine here in South Australia, although I did find some of the criticisms a little harsh, given the price of the thing. The vibrations, or 'tingles', I have found have 'attenuated' (gotta love a Vlogger with a vocabulary!) over this distance, and are quite tolerable to me. There IS actually some rubber isolation/insulation at the base of the handlebar risers; if you grip the base of one with your fingertips, and 'work' the end of the 'bars up and down with your other hand, you will feel some rubber swelling under your fingers. So the tingles are in spite of Honda at least making some effort there. And incidentally, to me the steering feels much better with those risers reversed, such that the 'bars are in a better alignment with the actual steering. That was almost a breakthrough discovery for me, and really improved its 'feel'. The fuel level indicators are, again, less than ideal, but I have taken some comfort from Honda's assurance (owners manual) that once the last bar starts flashing, we still have 3.7L remaining in the tank - about 80 kms. Its range of 400 kms I find acceptable, and the economy, as you mentioned, remarkable. Of course the blinker switch placement will always trouble those of us with other bikes, and the lack of an ambient temperature reading is an annoying oversight, although they may claim the sensor would have added to the very reasonable price of the bike. Perhaps that can be added later as an upgrade, but yes - its absence is puzzling. Tubed tyres, and low-rent suspension? We bought the bike knowing about these, and I am sure the suspension can be improved, and for me that cost was factored in when purchasing. Some improvement may be able to be wrought with the forks just by experimenting with fork oils, as they are 'separate function', but the rear unit will eventually be replaced with something better (as with many bikes!). But I have found the bike improved with those risers reversed, and the heavy rear rack removed. Tubed vs. tubeless tyres a longer discussion, but there are pros and cons for both. In the meantime, the tubed tyres contribute to its killer price. Tubeless tyres cannot always be repaired at the roadside, such that (without a bead breaker) you may be really stuck if you were on your own, for example. But I have so far found it a good value bike, which - as you say - almost 'does everything'. I don't find it completely lacks soul, in spite of my 50 years of Ducatis, and in fact it seems to me to have a surprising level of character for a Honda. It also has the subtle virtue of being happy at any speed, unlike many others. Having to go back to fifth to overtake at open road speeds is no bother to me - it is a 750, not an 1100 - and yes, the sixth gear is really an overdrive. Thanks again for your detailed reports.

Hi, for fuel I use the option to show in the dashboard the number of liters consumed, I find it very realistic and is give us almost exactly the fuel already "burned" by the Transalp.

There's also an option to show fuel consumed on reserve. So reserve is .73gal and you can watch the dash slowly reach that figure.

@@RocketMan_Moto it would show as 3.3L if your bike is set to KPH (metric). I'm in the UK (mph) so it shows it as gallons. The option is called Res Fuel Cons page 42 of the owners manual. It normally shows ---- until the low fuel light comes on and then shows what you've used since reserve started. It's not ideal, a range till empty would be far more useful.

@@RocketMan_Moto Love your videos. I'm also in the Algarve, in VRSA, just across the river from Spain. You probaly cross over on that great suspension bridge there. Here's a question for you RM: for a second bike, moving up from a Cb500f, would you recommend this Transalp over a Moto Guzzi V7 Stone? I like carving up bends on country B roads, but also like to put some bags on and head off on a tour. Best wishes, Martin

@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
Hi, Martin. I'm doing a group ride over in your neck of the woods tomorrow. The V7 looks nice, but it's a bit old and doesn't really have much power for carving up bends, imo. The Transalp is surprisingly good at that and can also take a fair bit of luggage. Also, there's a Honda dealer in Tavira, whereas with MG you're looking at going all the way over to RS in Lagos :)

@@RocketMan_Moto Thanks for the swift reply, RM. Yes, the Moto Guzzi looks great, and fans talk about character too, but I'm not 100% convinced. Unfortunately, I don't have my bike here. I don't live here full time, I tend to come for three months of the winter. I love this town, quiet, unassuming yet it has everything you might need. The Honda NC 750X seems popular around here, at least I've seen quite a few parked up around the place. I was talking to a man who road his new Transalp all the way from Austria the other day with luggage and a passenger; said it just ate the road, not a bother. It was the same colour as yours too. If I see a group of bikers around the town tomorrow I'll approach, and with a bit of luck you might be amongst them. 🏍👍

After 4 months owner of the Transalp, the only negative point that i can remark is the efficiency of the head light. When i say negative points i mean issues that can not be known BEFORE buying the bike. I knew that there is no cruise control or the Range gauge, so i can't be complained for things like them. Hopeful, in the next days i will receive the SW Motech crash bars (ordered at end of August!), and it will be possible to add extra lights, because in the dark you have two zones of light. One zone is 2 meters in front of you, after that a dark gap of about 4 meters and then the second light zone which at any case is not sufficient lighting for night riding. At the end, i still haven't used to the horn button
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
Yes, I've heard from several people that the headlight is disappointing, but tbh I find most bikes have terrible lights anyway. One more reason I rarely venture out after dark.

Seems I’m one of the owners who are fine with front light of TA. I maxed rear spring preload (still not at 30% of SAG) and then properly adjusted front light using upper screw on the back of the lamp. I rode it just Today in the dark and rainy forrest roads - no issue at all. Sure, it would be nice to have even more light but 60-80km/h was not a problem. My reference point is a modern SUV with led lights so TA is for me not bad at all!
@ride-fly-dive
@ride-fly-dive Жыл бұрын
I did all the same. There was a slightly improvement, but generally i am not satisfied from the final result. In city roads with low speeds it is ok. But riding on the highway at night, i always have that feeling of unsafe condition. Furthermore, it is always different result riding alone in comparison with a passenger. Extra lights is the perfect solution. My critic comes as i still have fresh in my mind the efficient double LED headlights of my previous bike Honda Varadero@@Luk4s7St

My plan is to keep mine. I first wanted a africa twin. But this feels much lighter and geometry is somewhat similar. Rear swingarm seems to come from the africa twin. From what i could see when i placed mine next to it. Obviously different linkage. And the front fender. But anyways my plan is suspension upgrade during this winter. Change battery as you can shave kgs with that. Different tires etc. The abs has a surcuit you can take out. Not tried that my self. But seen others do it. And it starts and rides. I have tube valve bend in my jacket pocket so no issue with that. Hitting 9000km very soon. Not a single issue yet. Loving the bike.

Yeah, in the US we only get the downtuned, black edition... But we do get the quickshifter as standard. And after running the numbers through an online currency calculator... The US MSRP is $1760 cheaper in the states than the UK. That price difference allows the US consumer to modify and kit out the Transalp completely, for the same price the UK consumer leaves the dealership with a completely stock bike. I'm personally more than okay with that compromise. Thank you Honda.

We never had any of these gizmos in the old days. When you ran out of fuel you had a reserve tank operated by a fuel switch under the tank. Easy, but you had better find a garage sharpish. The point is you don't need all the bling to make a bike enjoyable. All you need is a good engine, chassis, cycle parts and reliability. I'm on my third Transalp now having owned the two previous incarnations. They are great bikes and this one is no different. My only minor gripe is the twitchy low-speed throttle response. Still not ridden the Transalp but can't help but feel like there should be an equivalent to the V-Strom 800RE for this bike. That Suzuki is also much closer in price to the Transalp and has better brakes and suspension in exchange for lower top-end power. There are handlebar dampers where the extenders touch the top yoke, they do seem quite solid though. Hey Rocketman I like how you explained the power need. Yeah it’s fun to rev out a small cc bike once in a while (I have a CBR250R) but as I get older it gets tiring. I bet it’s much nicer to have more torque and hp and just use the grunt of the engine with some lazy revs. Good overall review. Cheers!

Really nice review and summary. Its funny, but the lack of a fuel range/ distance to empty display is a really big niggle for me. For any travelling, I have that visible on my Tiger dash all the time. I'd call it 'strongly desirable', or even 'indispensable'. Tube tires also a major drawback for me. I know the arguments on both sides, but that is a 'you're not serious', kind of thing. We all have our own priorities of course; those are just two of mine.

Hi there! Thanks a lot for your videos. They are an inspiration! We spent 3 months on the algarve during the first lockdown in 2020. So your videos were always a welcome throwback! 😊 We are currently on the hunt for a small property on the algarve coast. I would love to have a motorcycle here too. Is there a website or app where the portugese prefer to put their bikes up for sale? Or is it better to go to the dealers? We are located in Albufeira right now. Best regards

The most popular small ads site is olx.pt but second hand prices for cars and bikes in Portugal are absurdly high. I would recommend going to one of the (relatively) big dealers, like Triumph Loulé, BMW Faro or Angel Pilot Portimao, and - if possible - ordering new. Otherwise, you could always buy used in your country if the market is more favourable and import into Portugal. It is a long process, however, especially if you are outside the EU.

Appreciate the thoughts and update on the bike, I have had mine for just more than 2 months and am getting quite used to it. I love the combination of power, fuel economy, wind protection, and weight. I’m 5 foot 11, 32 inch inseam and I can just flatfoot the bike on both sides, like you, I had the taller screen added. I have noted a strange noise occasionally at certain speeds, not sure if it’s from the tires or wind coming up through the gap down the front forks. I’ll try to narrow this down… but other than that, yes this is a keeper for me… All I need. Quick side question, I want to add some grip puppies, have you found a local supplier in the Algarve?

Nice review all your points are valid although many are minor IMHO. Had mine for 5 months 4k miles (it’s my 2nd bike), ridden hard, now on new street Karoos. Love the bike all round winner, as a day / weekend rider I favour it over my Multi. I’ve changed the rear shock (400 euros) and it’s transformed the bike on the road, only limit now is the tyres. I prefer tubeless tyres and plan ti convert the rear over the winter. 200 miles day would be my limit. Good fuel consumption and difficult to get it under 50 mpg unless running over 80 on motorway. Love rain mode in the wet, soft throttle but then builds up to full power at speeds.

Nice video and detailed overview! About the engine heat on the V-strom 800DE: many other reviewers/owners are not complaining (or very little) about it. Perhaps you had a particular bad version, or newer versions improved the issue? Also, an ugly exhaust shouldn't be a dealbreaker as you can easily fix it (and probably should). Hello Rocket Man! Thanks for the video. I recently had the opportunity to ride the Transalp again. Previously, I complained that the engine vibrations were very noticeable in my hands - very high frequency. Additionally, the engine whistled in an irritating manner. This time I had one with a mileage of 1 km. And I didn't feel any vibrations. None. Has Honda improved anything? Does it depend on the copy? The biggest disadvantage of the Transalp are its tube tires and a very cheap suspension. Unfortunately, you can feel it. Transalp's best competitor seems to be the motorcycle you didn't mention - the Tuareg. More expensive but definitely more advanced. Americans have 10 km less (noise standards?), but it may not matter at all because the highest power is achieved by this motorcycle at really high revs. In everyday driving, torque is definitely more important.

Very nice review, thanks. I see you have had a CB500x, and I have a question you are well positioned to answer. I moved to a small ADV bike a few years ago (KTM 390 ADV) after decades of big street bikes, and really enjoyed the off-road side of it but wanted something more for street use. So over the last couple of years I added a KTM 350 EXC-F for the dirt, which is great, and a CB500x, thinking I would like it would better on the road. This was a mistake, I dislike it a lot... a bit smoother than the KTM 390, but no faster, no less vibration, top heavy, lousy suspension, just plain boring. I'm glad I didn't sell the 390 yet, it is far more enjoyable, but I am left still wanting something bigger and smoother for cruising with my more road focused friends and I'm considering the Transalp. It is winter here in Canada, so trying one is not an option right now. Other options in our area would likely be a T700 or a KTM 890. The Transalp seems to have impressed a lot of reviewers, but my experience with the CB500x has me feeling a bit hesitant - can you comment?
@RocketMan_Moto

I understand your hesitation. The Transalp is a much nicer, more modern bike than the CB500X. Yes, they look similar, but feel quite different on the road. I have tried both Transalp and Tuareg and yes Tuareg is much more capable off-road because of better suspension and ground clearance. For touring I personally prefer Tuareg because of tubeless rims and cruise control as standard but they are pretty similar in comfort. Tuareg feels little more like a larger dual sport bike compared to Transalp lower seat height. Transalp have more engine power and strangely less engine heat problems but electronics, suspension and overall handling is better on Tuareg. The engine on the Transalp is really great, actually better than Africa twin, so it is sad Honda did not made a more off-road capable platform like KTM 890/Husqvarna 901. Only problem is that there are few dealers for Aprilia, specially in UK as I understand so not many have the option to test it.

In short, if I may ask, do you consider the Transalp a Mini African Twin, or a beast-mode CB500x? Also you mentioned in one of your positives regarding the heat that emits from this bike. Singapore is summer all year round, with temperatures 30-35 degrees on afternoons, does it really not heat up that much? Thank you Rocket man for your videos and I look forward to your replies

Imho, the Transalp hits the sweet spot between the AT (too big, too expensive) and the NX500, which is a bit lacking in power. The absence of engine heat is a real advantage in hot climates and I’m missing it now with my Tiger 900.

Great 6 month review. I'm also an owner and, for me, the lack of low down torque is it's biggest failing. It loves those reves and that makes hill starts a noisy affair, plus traffic riding a bit of a pain.

@@ajohnwaters Yes, agreed. The XL600 Transalp I had many years ago had way more torque thats why it was so popular. It ran out of steam a bit around 80mph though. I have the XL750 and it is disappointing having to keep changing gear. The new V-Strom 800DE has more torque and is more fun to ride, and more confidence inspiring. Gonna try the 800RE soon, and the new Himmy 450. Having said all that the XL750 is still a great bike.

I'm still vacillating around whether to get a Transalp 750 or maybe just go for a Suzuki V-strom 650 XT that's a couple of years old and save myself a few thousand euros. Yes, the V-strom 650 is showing its age now and doesn’t have the bells and whistles that the Transalp does, but do I really need them I ask myself? One thing that is encouraging from your video is the fuel consumption, which is pretty good for a 750cc bike with 92hp on tap. Some more deliberation is required.

@podunkman2709
@podunkman2709 Жыл бұрын
@@richard3803 Let's start from 'Why are motorcycles getting hotter?' Most manufacturers are reaching emissions targets with water-cooled engines that run leaner and therefore hotter; big fans that blow radiator heat on to the rider; and massive catalytic convertors that burn carbon emissions and are extremely hot. Looks like Transalp has little more space between engine and catalyzer. I thin this piece has also some cover in Transalp. Perhaps the shape of the engine also favors appropriate airflow. I believe Suzuki could easily eliminate this problem, but Suzuki doesn't give a damn. As can be seen in the RE model - they transferred all the shortcomings from the previous model, creating a new motorcycle without any real reason, instead of simply improving the DE.

Speaking of gearbox, did you have any problems switching from 1st to 2nd, especially during the break-in period? I quite surprisingly often miss 2nd gear, although mine is just 300km yet. On a test ride where bike already had 21k kilometers I maybe missed it one time at the very beginning, so I hope this will vanish right after first service.

Sat today on a tiger 900 in a dealership. While I can touch ground on the gt models just about, rally is way way too tall for me. And considering there are no deals on the GT models and plenty on rally models making them a hard choice, I am really torn. I'm planning on doing anything from commuting to long trips in the summer, also including a small bit of offroading on fire roads for weekend camping. So it's between this and a tiger 660 sport (maybe 660 rally if my prayers will be answered this eicma). Any thoughts on those two?

The Tiger 660 is a great bike, but really won't take you very far off road, even relatively smooth fire tracks. I suppose you could swap the tyres for something a bit beefier... The 900RP is good off road (at least for my limited skills), but I didn't feel so confident with the GT Pro, again mainly due to the tyres, and if you're much under 6', it's going to be a challenge.
