@@rockfordfosgate just unpacked my Punch 240 trans ana that I loved back in the mid/ late ‘90’s . It was a great amp that I had running in my S-10 pickup. I can’t remember exactly how my entire set up was wired but there was the 240 Trans ana, and 2 other Punch amps that I had powering everything. I had an MB Quart component set (aprox 1” tweeters, 6” and 4” mids). Then 3- 12’s and a 15”. The neighbors probably weren’t too pleased 🤣 when I “forgot” to turn down the volume when getting home from school. But it kept me out of trouble and super busy…school, sports, car stereo, family and friends… never enough time to get into bad trouble. Anyhow, I’m finally getting back to putting a descent system into my 4Runner and will more than likely run either a single 12” , or 2 10” subs for my lows. Now I’m trying to decide which punch amp to run the subs. I’m for sure going to be looking for the amp to push aprox 750-1000 rms. And of course match whichever subs appropriately. Any suggestions on the amp to either run a single 12” in a ported box, or just 2 10” subs? Thanks in advance. Random question, my 240 trans ana… is it at all possible to send it in to RF to be looked over or serviced? Probably not. But just curious. Cheers!!

When i check tha max outputs of my estéreo Kenwood exelon dmx 907s 😅 i used 1 kilohertz testtone and no distorted but when I set my gains of my amplifier dsp audiocontrol D-4.800 they shows distortion wy 😂😅 at volume 28
@rockfordfosgate Жыл бұрын
If your AudioControl D-4.800 was a unity-gain processor, this wouldn’t happen. However, because this is an amplifier, it’s is amplifying the signal, causing the clip LED to illuminate. Once you find the maximum clean output from the radio, do not adjust the volume knob when setting the output level. If the gains are all the way down, and it shows clipping, you might be at the threshold, so you may want to click the volume down one notch.

Please give me an honest answer. How do these amps compare to the DSM series, reabillity, SQ and powerwise. I have a rather complex system in my car from before, and plan to add subs. This means 2 PCs Power 250M for Subs 1 Power 250x2 for Midbass 1 Punch 400x4 for Midranges 1 Punch 240x4 for Tweeters. Yes they are all in my posession. Everything a have been used by me in different systems for a couple of decades. BUT i have no way of installing this in my station wagon without making the car looking like a "smoergåsbord" for theives, and still keeping the amps cool. Since a pair of Punch P1000X5 and a Punch P1000X1BD at least in theory could replace my 5 DSM amps, and probably could be hidden in a 8" deep compartment in my cars floor. they are definetivelyt tempting.
@rockfordfosgate4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lochmodor, I've worked at Rockford Corporation for 30 years. I wrote the owner's manuals for the 250m, 250x2, 400x4, and 240x4. You can look on the back page to see my initials :-) Both set amplifiers will work fine. However, the capacitors in the older amplifiers will need to be replaced since they have a "shelf life" of 10-15 years. The input stages on the newer models utilize the same methodology developed for the DSM amplifiers, but have been updated with Differential Inputs and CLEAN circuitry. Both old and new amplifiers incorporate Class-A/B topology (with respect to the Class-BD model) for supreme Sound Quality. Both sets of amplifiers utilize the same unregulated power supply type that produce unreal Dynamic Output Power. Look at the older manuals in the Specifications table for Dynamic Power and for the newer models, the website shows Dynamic Power too. Either way, you can't go wrong. -Eric R.

Hey guys, I have my heart set on Fosgate, I only consider you guys for amps. But I have a simple question about my head unit and high level inputs. What is the max voltage the amp can accept, I think my head unit puts up to 10V through the speaker wire, and I heard not all amps can support such high level inputs? Secondly, how would this Punch compare to the compact PBR400X4D amplifier? Lastly, I want to run components up front and coaxials in the rear, and they are going to be 3ohm or under, is it ok to run either of the above mentioned 400W fosgates at 2-3ohm full time? The speakers handle 135W RMS so that is not a problem, I believe both these amps will put that out per channel, or close to it, at 2ohm. I'm not going to blast it all the time of course, just here and there, my system is geared towards great midbass and great quality, but I will want volume on occasion which will require almost 100% from the amp. Is there any real reason to get the Punch 400X4 rather than the compact 400X4D? Should I consider the 600X4 Punch or even the Prime 500X4 instead for my setup? If you take the time to comment, I would greatly appreciate it!
@rockfordfosgate4 жыл бұрын
The MAX INPUT VOLTAGE varies by amplifier and is listed on the SPECS tab of all our amplifiers under the "Input Sensitivity" specification. The Punch amplifiers utilize a Class-AB circuit topology and is better for sound quality installations versus the PBR400X4D which uses Class-D. Yes, all Punch amplifiers are stable into a 2-ohm load, so 2-3 ohms will be fine. If you have absolutely no space to offer and low current availability (Mini, Smart Car, Honda Fit, etc.) then the PBR400X4D works great for those applications. Otherwise, if SQ is the most important aspect, you have adequate space, and adequate power, then the traditional sized Punch amplifiers are your best bet.

If i am using the p600x4 with a sub on the rear channels, do i still use the 40hz tone to set the level of the sub or will the 1khz be the only tone that would be used?
@rockfordfosgate Жыл бұрын
Great question! If you’re using a preamp with a fixed output, RCA outputs or speaker line outputs from a radio, you can just use the 1kHz 0dB tone. If you’re running the signal into a preamp (DSP) that has different level settings for full-range and sub outputs, use the 1kHz to find the clipping level of the radio volume, then you can use the 1kHz to adjust the full-range output and 40Hz on the sub output respectively.

Any issue mounting this amp upside down?
@rockfordfosgate Жыл бұрын
Yes, we don't recommend mounting amplifiers upside down because the hot air dissipating from the heatsink needs to rise and cool the heatsink. If mounted upside down, the hot air has nowhere to go, essentially rising back up to saturate the amplifier. If mounting upside down, we highly recommend forced airflow (fan) to prevent this from happening.

Planning on getting a SINGLE Rockford fosgate power T1D212 and getting hooking it up to the RF Power 1000x1bd or what would that be a good amp to push that single 12? Or what amp would you recommend to maximize that subwoofer?
@rockfordfosgate5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jr Reyes, that's a GREAT subwoofer! The T1D212 is rated to handle 800 Watts RMS and can be wired to a 1-ohm load. The Power T1000-1bdCP is rated to produce 1000 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm and can dynamically produce up to 1395 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm. So this would at least be 200W over-powering the sub. We would recommend the T500-1bdCP because although it's rated at 500 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm, it can produce up to 707 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm. It's slightly under-rated for the RMS rating of the sub, but at least it will not overpower it like the T1000-1bdCP and you'll not be in fear of burning up the voice coil.

Thank you for the great instructional video. I have the same amp in 400.2. However i have a question. Is it possible to to connect it in 3 channel mode such as in older RF amps? I have 2 subs @ 2 ohms each channel rated 150rms. But im thinking of also installing a 4 ohm 400 watt rms sub in bridged along with the the other 2 which are wired normally. Id appreciate your feedback. Im looking to maximize the output. Thanks
@rockfordfosgate6 жыл бұрын
Great question arrepuess. YES, you absolutely can using passive crossovers. The article below explains how to do this on DSM generation amplifiers, but the concept is exactly the same. You'll run stereo speakers from say 100Hz High-Pass at 12dB/octave, then run the subwoofer bridged (using the appropriate terminals for bridging the amp) using a 100Hz Low-Pass crossover at 12dB/Octave. rftech.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/83
@arrepuess6 жыл бұрын
Rockford Fosgate excellent thanks for the quick reply! So i guess in order for me to do tri mode i will have to switch the amp to “full range”? So i can just rely on the head unit’s subwoofer selected rca’s make it low pass? If this works i should be getting a lot more bass from this amp alone. I wonder how well it will take the load & abuse? It will basically be pumping out 800 watts rms from a 400 watt amp?🔉🔊🔉
@rockfordfosgate6 жыл бұрын
I just re-read your original post and I have to apologize. I misunderstood and thought you would be using the amplifier in "Tri-Mode" to run full-range speakers on the front stereo channels (coax or components) and bridging a subwoofer, not running 3 subwoofers. Normally we don't recommend mixing subwoofer models and impedances due to the different acoustical propagation and power applied to each subwoofer. However, in you're case, this may actually work ... but we're assuming you have the exact same make/series of woofer (ie: all three are Punch P3 12"). If you're mixing brands, we still wouldn't recommend it due to the acoustical properties of each model.
@arrepuess6 жыл бұрын
Rockford Fosgate yes all subs. They will all be the same brand. 2 of them 150 watt rms 8” dvc wired 2 ohm each channel, “which actually bumps great already”. But i plan to purchase another sub the same brand, but wireable to 4 ohm and higher “400w rms” and put that in the bridged. I guess ill be taking a chance if i do that? It may be too much load for it? As its not a power amp, but a punch such as what you have in the video. 400.2. I think i will take the risk for experimental purposes😈
@rockfordfosgate6 жыл бұрын
O.K. thanks for clarifying ... based on your direction, it should theoretically work on 3 subwoofers. However, I would caution against purchasing that 3rd sub because you'll probably be disappointed with the output. You'll theoretically need to double your cone area (go from 2 subs to 4) or double your power input (400 watts to 800 watts) in order to get a 3dB difference. Going from 2 subwoofers to 3 will only give you an increase of around 1.7dB ... the least detectable difference in loudness is only 1dB. Doubling your power isn't feasible because the subwoofers are only rated to handle 150W RMS. My recommendation ... if you're wanting more bass, you'll probably be looking at running 4 subwoofers and using a bigger amplifier.

Team RF, I currently have the P1000X5 and looking to drive 2 P3D4-10's wired down to 1ohm - is this an acceptable amp to subwoofer match? The amp outputs 600+ watts at 1 ohm at the factory.
@rockfordfosgate5 жыл бұрын
Hi pagostyle, Thank you for providing the model numbers. Yes, this would be a great amplifier for a pair of P3D4-10 subwoofers. Since each sub is rated to handle 500 Watts RMS, two subs will give you 1,000 watts power handling capacity. The P1000X5 sub channel is rated to produce 500 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm, but can dynamically generate up to 863 Watts. Still within the power handling of the speakers, so you made a great choice!

So then is the bass knob connected to the Punch Level EQ knob in the amp? And when setting up the amp, should this EQ be an zero? Thanks
@rockfordfosgate5 жыл бұрын
The built-in Punch EQ is 0dB to +18dB @ 45Hz and/or 0dB to +12dB @ 12.5kHz (depends upon LP/AP/HP switch position). The PLC2 is an overall level control for the amplifier. When setting up the amplifier, we always suggest the EQ to be at MINIMUM since it's designed to help compensate for the acoustical fingerprint of your automobile. IE: some cars sound different if hatchback versus sedan, or truck vs. SUV, etc.

Is re-adjusting at -5 & -10 dB still relevant if using Hi-Res/Lossless music?
@rockfordfosgate Жыл бұрын
Great question, James! Yes, absolutely, because you're adjusting the amplifier's gain settings (it's clipping point) regardless of if playing sine-waves for SPL competitions or hi-res audio for SQ listening. Properly setting the amplifier's clipping point is important once the amplifier starts clipping, more power is generated and delivered to the voice coils, causing them to heat-up faster which can lead to premature failure.

Hi Felix, That's an awesome subwoofer enclosure! The P1-2X12 is rated to handle up to 500 Watts RMS and is prewired to a 2-ohm amplifier load. The R2-500X1 produces optimum power at 2-ohm (500W) but the P5000-1bd only produces 300W at 2-Ohm (Dynamic Power is still only 410W). In this scenario, we'd suggest the R2-500X1 as a great matchup.

@rockfordfosgate2 жыл бұрын
The Punch 400X4 should be adequate power to drive those. These are the power ratings, so if you go from 4-ohm stereo to 4-ohm bridged you're quadrupling your power applied, so you might want to check to see if your speakers can handle that much power. 50 Watts x 4 @ 4-Ohm 100 Watts x 4 @ 2-Ohm 200 Watts x 2 @ 4-Ohm Bridged It might be worth checking your gain setting. If you setup the amplifier using the 1kHz 0dB Gain Overlap track, we would suggest readjusting it using the 1kHz +5dB Gain Overlap. This will get you a little more output while keeping distortion to a reasonable (most people can't really detect it) level.

Am I underpowered?
@rockfordfosgate Жыл бұрын
Hi Tomothy, Looks to us like you have a great amplifier to speaker matchup, especially from a higher performance amplifier like the Punch 400X4! If the speakers are distorting at 3/4 volume, it sounds like it may be coming from the source unit as it's clipping (many radios distort at 3/4 to 7/8 of maximum volume). You should definitely use the CLEAN setup to figure out where your source unit clips, helping you know the maximum level where you can turn-up the volume.

Great question Orfeous and thank you for explaining your setup! Yes, you'll be able to take advantage of the hi-to-low converters built into the P1000X1bd and P400X4 amplifiers and ditch the external converter. You'll be able to use the Pass-Thru from the P1000X1bd and send full-range audio to the P400X4. You may need to adjust the Gain controls since you're dealing with a different signal voltage, but that will be a snap with the C.L.E.A.N. circuit.

You're welcome. Albeit eliminating the converter will simplify your signal chain, it will not be a night & day difference. Sounds like you have everything pretty tightened up. In the future, if you did want better control over the sound quality, the 3Sixty.3 or upcoming DSR1 will be great pieces for your ride.

@rockfordfosgate6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, Thanks for being a Rockford Fosgate fanatic! You can certainly use a Punch amp to run Power series speakers (and vice-versa.) Just keep the amplifier power output under the RMS power rating of the speakers. This will help prevent from overpowering the speakers and possibly burn the voice coils. Alternator size is based on the vehicle, so consider the factory alternator size and add your audio system. The Average Current Draw (13.8V Music) on the P600X4 is 45 Amps and the P1000X1bd is 65 A. If you have a factory alternator at 125 A, then add the other amplifiers on top (125A + 45A + 65A = 235A). Keep in mind, this is a general idea on how to calculate alternator size, so you will most likely get different recommendations. You may want to contact a specialist like Irraggi Alternators at www.iraggialternators.com/.

Rockford, would a capacitor compensate for some of the power differential?

Like a 1 Farad Energy Storage Capacitor used inline with the amplifier's B+ terminal? The answer is no. You're asking what model number 10" subwoofers should you use, if you used a pair with the Punch P1000X5, correct? The amp is rated to produce 500 Watts @ 1-Ohm but can dynamically produce up to 863 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm, so you'll need a pair of subwoofers that handles at least 850 Watts RMS (425 Watts each). We typically recommend to set all your treble & bass settings on the radio to flat, set your bass boost on the amplifier to flat, adjust your gain settings, then tweak the amp bass to taste. You should need only a minimal amount of adjustment. If you have to add considerably more bass, then be sure your crossover isn't set to low (it should be around 80Hz) for your subwoofers.

I have a p1000x1bd. Wired at 1ohm to 2 8" 400w rms subwoofers. Is it normal to have my gain up to 3/4 and out put clip turns on? My volume on my pioneer head unit is set at input clipping. Do I have a bad amplifier?
@rockfordfosgate3 жыл бұрын
No, the amplifier is fine. The impedance load of the amplifier does not affect the input stage of the amplifier. When setting the clipping point of the source unit, the volume should be increased until the LED just begins to blink, then back it off a little. This will be at a slightly different setting depending if you're using a 1kHz sign-wave or music to find the clipping point. Then adjust the amplifier GAIN control until it just begins clipping, then back it off a little. This will maximize the signal-to-ratio between the source unit and the amplifier. The P1000X1bd has a wide input voltage range from 150 mV - 12 V. Again, depending on if you used music or test tones to find the source unit clipping, you may experience different levels of LED flickering during normal playtime.

@rockfordfosgate3 жыл бұрын
@@lylegoodluck You're matching the output signal of the source unit to the amplifier. The gain itself isn't representative of a good/bad amplifier, but it is reflective of how much output voltage your source unit produces. If you have low output voltage from the source unit, you'll need to increase the gain on the amplifier for it to match. If the source unit has very high output voltage, you'll lower the gain for it to match.

The Punch P400X1 is designed for Sound Quality due to its Class A/B technology and is a FULL-RANGE amplifier so you could use this as a center channel amplifier. It also has differential inputs to reject noise and a CLEAN setup to help you get your gains right. Also, the Dynamic Power output is 563 Watts x 1 @ 2-Ohms so it produces much more than its rating. Great! It looks like the Suzuki Ritz uses 16cm speakers, so the P16-S and P16 will work fine. The 15" subwoofer is pretty large for that amount of trunk space, so you may want to use 2 10" subwoofers. Rated at 500W each, you'll have a better match in power handling -to- power output of the amplifier. I have a prime 400.4, but I bought a Punch Pro 6.5" just to test out, and it sounds okay on the prime amp with the front channels bridged and set to 2 channel, but I think the amp just isn't a good fit for it. Seeing that the amp puts out 75-80w per channel in 4ohm, and 200w or so bridged. The speaker prefers 100w rms to 200w max. An issue of too little/too much. I think the Punch 600.4 would be a better fit, as it puts out 75w rated to 129w dynamic per channel. This is all good and cool stuff but one point, its only perfectly set up with the setup disk. Any other source disk you install after setup will not be the same, meaning the output from the receiver will always change with differnt media. However with that said its a good starting point. You could do all this and set it up perfectly, Drop in An AC/DC disk and hear a clipped signal when the canon is fired. Or Buc's 1812 overture It really comes down to the recording studio quality during the recording of the material on the disk, File, or tape??? As the industry mixes using an avg size speaker 5.25" and these guys used to do everything by ear but now use digital recording methods you still at the mercy of the engineer's abilities. So try and keep that in mind and fudge a bit back from RED or blue red lights so your not even close to clipping. Give yourself some Headroom. Overall sound will be better anyway. Your other variable is a drunk customer who thinks full blast is better when he's drunk. Some people will blow the same speaker 10 times until you teach them what clipping is. If it sounds good at 27 then its going to rock at 35! Just long enough to send a clipped signal at 400 watts on a 50 watt amp and blow the Voice Coil out on a speaker. If the Amp dosn't have protection its also going to burn up. If you don't think it can I've seen 3-1000 watt PPI's amps shoot flames 2' out the side. on a customer DIY job.

Proper level setting does change by source and that's easy to compensate for. However, the simple fact is your average car audio enthusiasts does not want to listen to their music at 0dB (no clipping) because it isn't "loud enough". Typical fanatics appreciate +5 dB on the high end and +10 dB on the low end of Gain Overlap. This is the best compromise between sound quality and relative loudness. Our CLEAN setup will help a majority of car audio fanatics setup their system levels correctly using an intuitive method.

Hi@@cuchsluch, The input clip on the P1000X1bd detects when the source unit clips. When you setup the CLEAN circuit, the Alpine CDE-W265 should have been setup to approximately 7/8 max volume (typically the clipping point of the radio) ... if it was RED, the volume needs to be turned down until it turns BLUE. A line driver boosts the signal voltage for long runs or when you are driving a large array of amplifiers, so it doesn't sound like you need one because you say the amp gains are not more than half-way, telling us that you have adequate voltage for the amplifiers to make power. If you decide you're going to install one anyway, you'll be turning the amp gains down significantly, but please note, adding one will not change how loud your system plays.

I took out the wire to see the clamp rise of the other terminals and all the other terminals tighten all the way, meanwhile the left terminal gets right super early before the bottom piece of the clamp even makes it a quarter of the way up. How do I begin this process of getting a new one?

Nobody is been helpful! I need your expert advice,please. I got 2 ddx10s 2 ohm 1000rms. Only amp I could afford was the 1000watt bd 2 channel Rockford Fosgate amp. How due I wire them up to it with out it smoking my subs...

Can you double check your amplifier's model number. We have the Power 1000a2 which is a 2-channel amplifier. Most all out "bd" series amplifiers are mono such as the Power bd1000a1. For the subwoofers, we think you're referring to the DDX-10 dual 2-ohm, correct?

@@rockfordfosgate p1000x1bd is the amp. Its 1 ohm stable but it's not bridgable! I'm confused.
@rockfordfosgate4 жыл бұрын
@@donaldwhiteman3224 Thanks for correct amplifier model, yes this is a 1-ohm mono amplifier. "Bridging" occurs when you use 2-amplifier channels to create 1 big single channel. Since the P1000X1bd is already a single channel amplifier, it can't be "bridged". You'll notice for 2 subwoofers, you'll need 4-ohm DVC models and use "Wiring Diagram #5" as shown on the WIRING WIZARD tab here: www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/p1000x1bd/. There is no optimum way to wire a pair of 2-ohm DVC subwoofers to that amplifier because you'll only get 1/2 the output power. The only way to get full power output, is use two 4-ohm subwoofers.

Y’all think the old school one is still better for example the punch ix 200?
@rockfordfosgate6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the old school amplifiers made what Rockford Fosgate is today. They are durable, powerful amplifiers and were designed to withstand the test of time. We still utilize those same principles today by developing amplifiers that are "under-rated" and will be considered "old school" amps when the next generation has taken over.

@@doilusa I pulled this info from the owner's manual, so maybe this will help: 1) Input Level Knob - The input level control is used to match the output of the audio source. 2) RCA Input/Pass-Thru - The RCA inputs are capable of accepting signal from either high-level(speaker) to low level(RCA). When utilizing high-level for input signal the auto turn-on feature is active. The pass-thru RCA’s are passive, including full input signal range and auto turn-on functionality when active. 3) Crossover Switch - Selectable switch for High-Pass (HP) or All Pass (AP) or Low-Pass (LP). 4) Variable Crossover - Is a built-in 12dB/octave Butterworth filter with a crossover point variable from 50Hz to 250Hz. 5) Punch EQ - A Gyrator based Punch EQ that eliminates frequency shift with boost. This works along with the crossover switch on the amplifier. Variable from 0dB to +18dB @ 45Hz. 6) 2/4 Channel Switch - Setting this switch to the 2CH. position, switches the inputs to a 2-channel mode, allowing connection to only the front inputs with a 4-channel output. 7) Remote Punch Level Control - In/Out Remotely control the output level of the amplifier. The PLC-OUT is used to daisy-chain additional amplifiers controlled by a single remote. Hi I have a Rockford fosgate T1500 1bd amp I wanted to know if this amp is good to push 2-10” fosgate p3 subs
@rockfordfosgate4 жыл бұрын
Hi Junior, That might be alittle too much power. P3 subwoofers are only designed to handle 600W, so if you have 2 subs, that will give you 1200W of total power handling. The T1500-1bdCP amplifier produces up to 1715 Watts x 1 @ 1-Ohm, which would be over powering them by 500 Watts. Personally, I'd recommend the T1000-1bdCP since that's a better match-up!
