I bought Greg's book and literally could not put in down. I started reading it around 7 in the evening and finished it about 7 in the morning ! Bought it for several family members as a Christmas gift. I highly recommend reading, ' I'm no Angel'.

I first saw the Outlaws with Blue Oyster Cult & Edgar Winter at the Lebanon Valley Speedway in 1980! I love the Outlaws! But, I’ve always felt like Henry Paul is such an arrogant human being and Hughie was such a humble down to earth man! RIP Hughie…

The thing about Henley is that lyrically he was tops but he was smart enough or felt uncomfortable tackling the music part of a song. He was fortunate on a couple songs to have Mike Campbell who provided the brilliant musical arrangements that made a lot of those songs memorable. Boys of Summer is a prime example. He also worked with Kotchmar another great multi-instrumentalist.

I enjoyed this interview. Thanks, gentlemen. I am a huge fan of biographies and autobiographies. Among the best written of the music genre I have read are "Who I Am", by Pete Townshend, "Morrissey" by Morrissey and "Lou Reed - A Life" by Anthony DeCurtis. Great, informative reads that chronicle rock history of their respective eras. Also, very well done is David Byrne's "How Music Works".

I liked his book also. And, the first Outlaw album was and is outstanding. There Goes Another Love Song is one of the great rock songs.

I thought Gregg Allman's book was quite good. How do you tell your true story, if you're not going to tell about hard feelings & conflicts & arguments. I didn't feel like Gregg was knocking anyone, just telling it like it was. Maybe Henry's life was rainbows & roses, that doesn't mean everyone else's was. I'm not being critical of Mr Paul, always loved his singing & songwriting, I just disagree strongly about "My Cross to Bear" being a disappointment.

I have not read it but I heard an interview he did and he shared a lot of things including his Christian conversion that gave him true life and purpose ..he seemed very humble to me. Apparently the book got great reviews , I looked it up. I do know as a songwriter, writing a book is much different and a big undertaking ..I don't know anything about the Outlaws, was not a fan . The Alman Brothers were one of my favorite bands , still love to listen to them. My 2 cents

Songwriters are much different than authors of books. Its easy to write a few verses and a chorus but to take on a book and make it enjoyable to me seems very hard to do. In all fairness to Gregg , he became a Christian late in life and he seemed very humble in the one interview I heard. I had so much respect for him being transparent about his struggles, addictions, and his obvious love for Jesus that had changed his heart and turned his life around. Jesus' can change anyone , he did me. Just sharing my 2 cents

Seen...Henry Paul Band....Outlaws....Blackhawk...(4man band) Outlaws...met Henry several times...always stopped and talked as long as there were fans around.....signed autographs and just hung out and visited his fans...

Perhaps Gregg was a talented yet self-absorbed narcissist with an inferiority complex because of the supreme talent of his late elder brother. This might explain his lashing out and denigrating other talented individuals rather than being gracious.

It's been a while since I read Allman's book, but I do remember a paragraph or two about how he didn't dig some of the other Southern Rock bands or consider the Allman Brothers to be 'Southern Rock'

Henry Paul wasn't afraid to call his music "Southern Rock", even though I always thought of the Outlaws as Florida's version of the Eagles or Poco

I've always been a big fan of the Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman's music but to me, he came off as petty in the book, especially as regards Dickey Betts. They wouldn't have been the same band without Dickey and it was him who was the driving force behind keeping the band going in the 70s when Gregg couldn't get it together.

I found My Cross to Bear a really good read. So to each his own. Didn't find it to be overly critical either. He gave his opinion why he didnt care for Dickey Betts and I can understand why.

It’s true. Gregg’s book is pretty much a cliche of what you would imagine it would be. The best of the genre are Keith Richards and Bob Dylan. Pete Townsend’s book is great in parts, but focuses too much on home renovations and other shit like that.

Take an ALEXA and ask to play BlackHawk or The OutLaws and you will know the first 25 songs of Both bands. You will know the Lyrics of most songs Too!! Incredible!!!

Eric Clapton's autobiography, by contrast, was the exact opposite of Gregg Allman. He was VERY complimentary of virtually everyone he performed with over the decades. Hardly had a bad word to say about anyone in the music business--he did say that he thought the San Francisco music scene was "second rate", but that was an opinion shared by a lot of non-SF musicians

Not surprising since the Wrecking Crew was the real musical talent behind the scenes for many of those front bands (which was all a cultural conditioning psyop by the military industrial complex from the start....read "The Strange But Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon" by Dave McGowen and have your mind blown.

@@reesedaniel5835 I was thinking mostly of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Big Brother and the Holding Co, whom both I , and Frank Zappa, considered "hype" and an absolute bore. You can be a jam band and keep things exciting---but the Dead's jamming went nowhere for me. But yes---some of the "poppier" LA bands were just as bad in their own way

Huge Outlaw fan, and in general a fan of Henry Paul's. I have even bought the Blackhawk albums. Greg's book was readable and I personally found no fault with it. My buddy's who served in Vietnam sure did! Like, it really pissed them off. I do believe Greg was very hard to deal with in the first place. His manager was legendary for being an A hole.

I think Gregg Allman was so rough around the edges. A great vocalist and a masterful organist but rough in so many ways. I think part of it stems with all the demons he allowed to enter his life drugs and alcohol. When you travel down those roads it has got to affect you more than one way.

His father was murdered, his mom returned to school to train for a profession and sent the boys to military school, I believe, for a while, Gregg's six marriages, his brother's then Berry's untimely deaths in thirteen months are bound to damage even the strongest people. A rough life of incredibly emotionally taxing experiences involving numerous losses. Drugs and alcohol may have been the only true, reliable comforts he had..

Gregg's book was a major disappointment. It was essentially just a run-down of all the drugs he did and all the women he slept with. I wanted a full on, insider's story of the music, the touring, and all that goes with it. Instead I got nothing but the drama. It was Dickie who held the band together after Duane abd Berry died, while Gregg fell apart. I was really hoping for the written musical journey, but that didn't happen.

If you've even been in a band, then you know it's hard to get along. Add touring and it's impossible. Add talent, and if they're that good they won't tolerate morons. Clapton is a racist and liar, but a great guitar player. Stills was absolutely washed up by 73, a drunk and drug addict according to Nash.

I would only be curious to know more about Frank O'Keefe. Two albums and he was gone, he gave no interviews, dropped out of the music business. Frank was by all accounts a really sweet and very likeable guy, generous with a good heart, but he had demons due to an addictive personality.

Lol, he’s reviewing a book, without having read Gregg’s book, if he "Gregg" hammered others ,well. Buts it’s rock n roll, it’s going to get nasty. So typing out of ignorance of the books inside. You don’t know if it interests you until you start reading. I won’t read either book, not interested, love the music tho. Never got into the AB, tho the talent was top notch.
