I'm a 70 year old American man, a Native of Iowa. Decades ago I made friends with an Old Timer Rock Hound. His entire basement was his rock shop. Someone had told him that their were no jewelry qaulity rocks in Iowa. He took this as a challenge and over a decade made 50 belt buckles with rock from Iowa Quarries. He had them mounted on the wall. Stunning Collection. Wonderful Man.

My Daddy worked at GE; Battery (General Electric). He had a friend at work that, as a Hobby, found and cut stones. He started with Mama, and had a stone cut to go into a Ring, the stone was a deep Blue that sparkled Red under light. My older sister was next, but, I don't remember what her's looked like. I didn't get mine until after I finished Basic Training. I joined through the Delayed Entry Program, so, I signed my contract on January 3rd, 1975, and, was, therefore, required to Report for Duty to begin Basic Training on June 3rd, 1975, 3 days after I Graduated HS. When I got my ring I was bummed out because the stone was Orange. Being a Floridian, the only Orange I liked was Citrus Fruit. I had 6 MOS's B4 it was all said and done, but, the one that sent me to Germany, was the Heavy Equipment Mechanic MOS; ALL of the call #'s & letter's have changed since I was in, but I picked that MOS on purpose, to learn how to work on stuff. Anyway, one day in the Motor Pool, it fell off of my finger. I discovered it was missing just B4 Formation in front of the Orderly Room, for our 5 mile "DisCom Run", and, I went and told Top that I had lost my ring and I was going to go find it. Top said, "You can do that AFTER the run," and, I said, "Top, my Daddy gave me that ring, and, he's Terminally I'll; I may never see him again B4 he dies; I'm going back to the Motor Pool to find my ring !!" So, I walked back to the Motor Pool, and, quickly found it... Or, more than half of it, anyway. I could no longer wear it, because, the back of the ring was gone. It was a Sterling Silver ring that only displayed the very top of the stone. Rather "Ho-Hum..." I hand-carried across the North Atlantic 12 times and never lost it. In 1994, I manipulated husband #1 into having the stone re-mounted into a Tiffany Setting. When I got it back, I couldn't get over what a BEAUTIFUL STONE it was, now that I could see a lot more of the stone. The Jeweler at Zales looked at it through his monocle, and, said, "Tell me the story about the Stone, again ?? " So, I did. I've used it, when it was in the old setting, to scratch glass a few times, when the top of the stone wasn't covered. It always cut the glass, but, never scratched the Stone. He said that it was beautifully cut, and, asked me if the man who cut it was looking for a job cutting stones. I said that, I was pretty sure that he was dead, because it was a friend of my Daddy's, and, Daddy had been dead for a long time.

Iowa gal here. 😎 No jewelry quality rocks in Iowa? Puh-leeze! Apart from our fame with geodes, we have all sorts of jasper here and there. It's why we have a county called Jasper. Red jasper is one of my favorites, and there's plenty of it where I live. 😁😁 I'd love to eventually get into cabochon making, with the water blades and everything! It's been a while since I have been able to do serious rockhounding, but I work with stones and crystals in my spiritual life and Iowa, my home state, has plenty to offer if you look past the obvious.

Always great to get the kids involved in something outside. When I lived in NJ and my kids, nieces and nephews were young I used to take them to places like the Franklin mines and quarry. We were allowed to "pick" and collect as much from the quarry as we could carry out in a couple of bags. Then, we were allowed to choose a couple of fluorescent rocks from the mines. I bought a long/short wave black light and the kids were all excited to see their rocks 'glow in the dark'! 😮😁 That was in the late 80's__I'm going on 71 and I still have my rocks, love 'em! 💖🙌😺

I was on the Connecticut coast one Thanksgiving. When we went for a walk on the beach after dinner, I (a birder) was delighted by the variety of waterfowl in their little cove, but what knocked me out were the vivid red and deep slate-gray stripes in the sand. My hosts told me they actually did like the Marianne of the song -- they'd often be down by the seaside sifting sand. The larger red and gray granules would stay in their fine sieve. Then, they'd run a magnet over it to pull out the gray bits, and voila -- lovely red and black sand to sell to local sand artists. They were bits of garnet and iron ore pounded out of the granite face New England presents to the Atlantic. I thought that was pretty nifty, but maybe they should have been arrested.

@Koshka-cola So draw the line. At what point does it stop being ridiculous to be upset over theft? P.S. This is because everyone had the 'I only took one' attitude and it was destroying the local ecosystems.
@Koshka-cola3 ай бұрын
@SylvanApe but it's a parking lot. I understand where you're coming from, but how often are parking lot rocks actually taken? The location is much less desirable for memorabilia, and less likely people will have that "I just took one attitude." Plus the enough people having an impact to destroy local ecosystems already happened when they set the foundation for the store. If you called the police about a parking lot rock theft, would they even write a report? If it was a problem, wouldn't people have signs n laws stating like on your beach to not take rocks home? I suppose i draw the line depending on circumstances and location. Sorry lots of text..I'm an overthinker, also not trying to be rude or anything, but why choose to comment this here? So many threads who aren't people grieving a lost one are going about this topic.
@SylvanApe3 ай бұрын
@@Koshka-cola "wouldn't people have signs n laws stating like on your beach to not take rocks home?" Well, we do have a law against it. We don't have street signs saying 'Don't assault people', because it's basic and commonly known that it's illegal, like taking thinks that are not yours. "why choose to comment this here? So many threads who aren't people grieving a lost one" Because this is a prime example of someone deciding that their personal circumstance is an excuse for breaking the law. I understand the grief, anger, sadness etc people feel in different life situations, but I don't see that as a defense for breaking the law. The use of the term 'freed' to justify it also is an issue, as if the OP was doing something noble and kind, rather than just accepting it was wrong (albeit a very petty wrong that no one is going to lose sleep over).

They're both beautiful! I've loved rocks since I was 9; kept a bag of them under my bed till my mom made me move them. I did in our backyard! Forward in time, I became a lover of gemstones-- semi-precious and precious BUT a man I knew gave me his entire rock collection! I had a bag of fossils,3 metal labeled cabinets of gemstones and 2 huge bags of rocks. I recognized citrine and had a local man make me a huge citrine solitaire. Worst thing? I had to move and covid hit-- so much to pack and I forgot the rock collection! Hurts still 5 yrs later. Keep on doing what you love!!!❤

I really should have read all the comments before i commented, i didnt think this may people woukd be butthurt about a rock being taken from where rocks dwell, nature. I havent heard ONE complaint about folks who take ricks and paint on them. Some they keep, some they put somewhere for someone to find, which tells me that the reason anyone has an issue with his taking a rock and replacing it with another, is because he has found something special. Something he could potentially make money with. Id also like to point out that hes not on anyones private property. This is, in fact, public property. I personally find it quite lovely when someone finds something that thousands of people cared nothing about and gave it a whole new beautiful life! Im sure the rocks are much happier around the necks of those who cherish their beauty, compared to the poor quality of existence it had being stepped on, kicked around and unappreciated. It all boils down to jealousy and money. Its not his fault that some are to busy b******* about absolutely everything that everyone else does to actually learn or even want to turn something that nobody else cares to see the beauty in, into sonething so beautiful and appreciated. Now, of course my opinion on this would change drastically if the day comes that rocks are in short supply. Endangered of becoming extinct all because of a random person is taking all of them, which by the way, how do we know that this rock wasnt stolen in the first place? Where do rocks come from? I really hope this message helps some find their uncommon sense and find a little beauty wherever you can in life.

I had some old busybody grump call Security on me for wading through the endless pieces and bagging some up. 1 of the Security guys was just angry that someone was so petty to turn me in for a theft and it was just picking up rocks and wasting his time and he had to go out there for "Stupid rocks"... he told me he didn't care about any rocks and to have at it and the second Guard told me which lot had the best ones in his opinion.
