Western Australia Now and Then

Western Australia Now and Then

Күн бұрын

Rockigham is one of the fastest growing areas in W.A. and sadly this will lead to over-crowing, traffic congestion and has already led to a loss of the 'country town' feel that it once had.
The area has some remarkable attractions and the proximity to Perth means that it attracts many visitors during the warmer months.
A short 45 minute drive from Perth, Rockingham (or swinging pig as it is sometimes called by the locals) offers safe swimming beaches, boating, fishing and sight seeing. The large shopping complex at Rockingham City offers a variety of goods.
The area is somewhat spoiled by the industrial strip along the coast to the north. What would have been one of the world's most picturesque bays, the Cockburn (not surprisingly pronounced Coh-burn) Sound area is now cluttered with heavy industry.
The sound was named after Vice Admiral Sir George Cockburn.

I lived there in 72 (Palm Beach). We used to go to Garden Island on the ferry before it was developed. White kid from England I burned up. We moved to Sydney then came back to England. Back to concrete and no colour. I’ve never been back to Oz. There was nothing in rockingham then. We used to have the school swimming galas between jetties. Catching blowies and popping them on the jetty. Kids are cruel. 😂😂

I went to high school down here and remember what is was like before all the development. So much better back in the 70s. Like you I came out here from England, went back but THANKFULLY came back again and have been here ever since.

@@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen I was in juniors there. Old man lethby ran the ferry. He might not have been that old. We never wore shoes. Got in a lot of trouble for disappearing off to Warnboro Sound for the day and not telling anyone. We ended up driving across the Nullabor and settling in Maroubra in Sydney. Totally different place. Worst paper round ever. Up and down hills with my trolley. Also used to sell papers outside the Holden factory. Surfing skateboarding and boxing. Came back to England and it was criss country running in minus 3 and swimming at the local baths. You never realise how good you have it as a kid. Lived in Spain for a few years now thinking about moving to the coast again. Once you’ve had the sea on your doorstep you never want to live inland again. 🥴

Great vid - I go there often and live in Fremantle. My eldest son learned to walk on the grassy area before the beach at Rockingham.

It sure has changed. I remember the golf course next to Reid Rd, Woolworths down at the beach and a very small Rockingham City.
