Hi how are you. You are probably thinking of Marty Robin's hit version of the song. I've always thought that this was a great song. I it paints a great picture in the mind.

Love Mr. Cash! A song that you need to react to is “ a pair of old sneakers “ by George Jones and Tammy Wynette. I’m certain that you will find this one interesting.

Johnny used to sing this on his TV show a lot when I was a kid. And I loved it. Don, you mentioned that you've listened to a lot of southern rock, (I also listened to a lot of southern rock when I was younger, Was a big influence on me) I have a version of this song by the southern rock group, The Outlaws" on their 1980 album "Ghost Riders". The song itself was written in 1948 by a man named Stan Jones who wrote a lot of Western Music. I read that members of the Western Writers of America consider it the greatest Western song of all time. There's been several instrumental versions done as well. That guitar riff done on electric guitar with a tremolo was always a popular sound. I remember on the soundtrack of the 2007 Marvel movie "Ghost Riders" starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, the rock group, Spiderbait did a version of this song. This classic song has been done by so many artists over the years. It's just one of those great songs!!! 🙂

@Jeff Cather The rendition by the Outlaws may have been the one I was trying to think of when I was doing the reaction---good recall. It seems like this song is one of those songs that is prevalent in so many places and decades, but few would remember it as one of the most noticeable songs even though it was.

Thanks for reacting to this song. I wholeheartedly agree with your rating for this song. Loved Johnny Cash's solemn voice along with the instrumentation and the lyrics.

Stan Jones wrote the song 1948 he says the story was told to him by a old native American .many people have sung it over the years . Makes me think of a time I first moved here to AZ. I took my Dad to a place which is now closed called Rockn R ranch shut down shortly there after. It was a old ghost town in which they had like a medicine show the day I was there . They had it running the ghost town like it did in the old west. Then a dinner show . During the dinner show they sung that song it was dark by then and a white horse ran by the window . It was awesome .

This is one of those songs that you can close you're eyes and actually see what's happening. I think it's about where cowboys go if they don't repent

Great request Hondaguy! I've heard many versions of this over the years - I believe a guy named Vaughn Monroe was the first to have a hit with it back in the early 50s. I remember Marty Robbins version very well, but my all time fave is definitely this one by Johnny. I love the instrumentation and Johnny's wonderful voice - especially how he sings the "mournful cry" with the drop at he end. Thanks Hondaguy and thanks Don for another terrific review and I agree with the 9.8 rating on this one too!

Great analysis Don. My take on the song is this song is a dream or vision that av cowboy who has done some shady things in his past that he's telling someone about I love how well Johnny can tell a story. I am kinda stunned that the group the Highwaymen did do better. There is a guy out there that goes by Ghost of Johnny Cash that does covers of other songs in Cash style. You guys should check him out he is pretty good. And Don, as you know I have been watching your older videos, when you wore hat backwards. With it backwards, you remind me of Art Burke from Ice Road Truckers, without the F bombs . 🙂
