Charlie Starr is from a very small town on the Alabama / Ga border called Lanett. Charlie used to work for my brother as a body repair man in a collision center in Marietta Ga. His dad was a mechanic / body man as well. My brother told me that when Charlie was working for him he was also writing and playing music and he would bring cassette tapes he had recorded to my brother and ask his opinion. Charlie didnt want to fix cars, he wanted to be a Southern Rock Star...He followed his dreams and he made it.

The very first time I heard this song, I related to it immediately. I grew up in a small town in Alabama. In high school, I thought baseball was going to be my ticket out. It ended up being the military that kept me from getting stuck as a construction laborer, a drug addict, or living in my parents house forever. I was able to avoid all that and see the world. I have friends who chose other paths and they are still there today some 20+ years later. I never moved back, but I live in a small town in Florida now and could never see myself living in a big city after the military. I will always be a small town man at heart, just not the same small town I grew up in. Thank you for rating this song @RockN2Country!

I grew up in a small shithole town in Alabama that this song describes perfectly and got the hell out of there as soon as I could and you would be amazed at how many family members and "friends" acted like I did something wrong by wanting to get away. This song has always hit me hard. I've seen and continue to see on social media so many people from where I'm from continue to live this song.

A well deserved rating for an excellent song! This one's on my daily playlist...a simple slice out of the life of a southern boy that many should be able to relate to. Making a career of the military and attending half a dozen large universities, I guess you could say this small town boy became worldly! But who knows?.... here I am back where I was born in bustling town of 388! :-) I've tried city living but I found it dangerous and boring. Yeah there's plenty of stuff to do...just not the things I like. I hear city folk say the same about living in a small town...and even suburbanites have their own ideas of things. But here's the thing...if you're going to sing a song or write a book...stick with what you know. There's a lot of subtle nuances you pick up from living in different environments and there's simply nothing worse than hearing an outsider trying to tell you who are.

Well said. I spent 30 years in cities and a twist of fate/career brought me back to my hometown. So thankful to be here (although I have to occasionally travel to get my city life fix!) This song captures so many of my classmates lives. They took over their parents' farms and businesses because that was the expectation. Most seem satisfied, but I wonder?
@davidemswiler43515 жыл бұрын
@@tupelohoney622 Thanks Tup! Yeah, sometimes you have to get into the city for some things but we both know the best part of that trip...leaving! Seeing the congested traffic in your rear view mirror and the green loving arms opening up from the sides of the road always makes me smile! :-)

Dude, I'm in rural Virginia. I've been listening to them since 2005... Damn Yankees. The funeral sound is an organ. I appreciate your reaction, and thanks for listening to my favorite band. It's more southern rock than country but I can see the confusion.
@RockN2Country4 жыл бұрын
@Rebel with a cause First time I heard these guys I was thrilled because I practically grew up on Southern rock, and not many folks have done it to where it roped me in. When you grow up on Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers it's tough to compete with that, but Blackberry Smoke has their own sound and they are seriously good. As for rural Virginia, that's some of the most beautiful land in this country. The Shenandoah Valley/Mountains are unreal. Now if the cops would only let me drive the way they do in West Virginia, I'd be golden. Ha! Welcome aboard the channel, BTW!

I'm born and raised in northeast Indiana. Small/medium town. Here you got three choices Farm (that you have to be born into) Factory (That you have to either know people to get in, or be treated like shit and payed accordingly) Customer service (It dont pay hardly anything, and there is little to no chance for advancement) Even if I won the lotto though, I would still live here. It has it's problems, but it's home.

Reminds me of Springsteen’s “ they bring you up to do just like your daddy done”. Don, You are a really interesting person. I hope you write a book someday, maybe an autobiography. I was watching a David Hoffman vid the other day about a guy name Herbie who drove from his home in Georgia to Nashville, hoping to get a deal. Little naive. David filmed his journey. Herbie did get a contract from a producer, but didn’t get famous. There was something in his story that made me comment with a poem I wrote in ‘76, when I was 16. It looked very odd to see it typed out on KZbin, and I got a kick out of that, so I’m going to do it again here. Should mention I was listening to a lot of Kris at the time. I know you write, and don’t expect you to critique it, wouldn’t want to embarrass you: So he lies there contemplating His chances of fooling the world When he’s only really trying To find a substitute for the hating Of a way he knows ain’t right Cause he’s living without believing And he thinks he should be leaving He’d rather walk away than fight With relief he turns to one night stands And the bottle helps to ease the pain Of the insanity of playing the game He hides his tears in trembling hands So in the comfort of darkness I hold him tight And pray to God I never cling See, to me that man is everything But Lord, it’s gonna be another empty night.
