The part you said was a "valve" is a capacitor. It's the main filter capacitor for the amp's power supply.

The 474 (and it's close cousin the 50-record 473) were the first Rock-Ola models to have LED displays to show the record playing and the last models to select records from the pinbank system. Later models have an electronic selection system using an optical reader. BTW, I replaced the gas springs on a similarly-built model 478 by using NAPA auto parts Lift Support # BK-819-5208:

When did they start hiding the record playing mechanism away like this? I remember using one of these in the 1980s as a kid, and thought it must be using some kind of tape-based playback system, as I couldn't see anything happening!

Cool machine Marcus! Yeah you'd have thought that removing that mute relay would have cut the COM-NC contact to the speakers or amplifier and it would have gone silent. Amazing selection wheel and coin mech counter system. Certainly reminds me of an old pinball machine that my mate had. That had the same sort of thing inside - when the ball hit certain areas this rotary counter inside the unit would go round until it reached the end and triggered the counter (like a bonus score) many times as it returned back (hmmm wonder if he still has it). Definitely need to take a look at that sometime ;)

The mute relay is used to mute the amplifier while the mechanism is rejecting a record. The relay will close once the mechanism loads the record to prevent the sound of the brush cleaning the stylus or unwanted noises of the mechanism. Once the record has reached the end and the mechanism rejects, the mute relay will open, muting the speakers.

I have a 474 that is driving me crazy. The write-in arm will flip the switch but the read out arm never reads it. It just circles around back to home.

The Rockola 474 doesnt have any valves in it .If you knew your onions , you would know that because it tells you its "solid state".

I have a Rock-ola 450 that when the selector buttons are depressed, there is no selection made. and the reset button does not reset buttons when it is pressed. manual selections can be made and the jukebox works great. Believing something is not powering some where on the selection unit. Any help on what to look at, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not a professional nor an expert but in all of the audio equipment I've dealt with in CB and ham radio it's usually a bad capacitor in my experience good luck
