Used this and another video to fix the mechanism in my 1968 Rock Ola 441. The two models (441 and 445) are very similar in this area. I had the classic symptoms - record not laying down properly and the bow missing the record on return to the carousel. The take-apart, clean-up and reassembly went exactly as per the video, and the end result was a fully working juke-box. Result. Thank you for a superb tutorial. Much appreciated.

I've had to do this with all my Rock-Ola machines , I have the Rock-Ola 444 , The Rock-Ola 478 Mystic , The Rock-Ola 477 Max, The Rock-Ola 454, I have a collection of parts for them as well that I've collected over the years. They are full of different genres of music in each machine . Like 80's music in one 70's music in the other and Big Band etc etc .. I love to restore these machines for my collection.. I'm glad to see you restoring these beautiful machines for others to love and enjoy . This will actually help others to fix this common issue . Not many people have posted videos of this being done this detailed for others to follow .. Thank you again so much for the step by step process . I'm also looking to pick up a set of them Pin punches you have i actually love them thank you for the idea, I've always just used regular punches, but the ones you have there made for them with a blunt end should be better for the pin and the inside of the cast. Stay Awesome buddy !

In the mid 70's I worked in a restaurant that had a jukebox in a store room with about 20 pay/selection stations at the booths. I was facinated with the thing and always hung out when the guy came and opened the mystery big black box. When I hear a song that was in it I still think back to those times. As I recall it seldom had any problems and got played a lot.

Thank you for your videos - this has been a HUGE help to us as we work on a Rockola model 461 jukebox given to us by someone in our neighborhood. It had belonged to his grandfather - and hadn’t been played in years. It played initially - and then we worked in perfecting it, which meant disassembling the mechanism exactly like in this video - then reassembling it after piling it with the 3-in-1 20w oil. It took a few tries, but we did it! Thank you, again! Keep up the great work!!

Joe, thank you very much for taking the time to put together this video, it is very informative, and I will clean my gears etc this month. I just picked up the 488 model and it doesn't work, nor had a key. I have already master lock picking, so I was able to open it without a key, but order one anyway. The trick was knowing how waffer locks work, once I did, I picked the lock in less than a minute, and then found the cash box lock key inside. I am hoping greasing the gears will get this thing working. I started watching your videos earlier in the year after I bought 2 non working EM pinball machines, which I have working now. Thanks for all the great videos and help.

@@LyonsArcade Definitely seized up, nothing would move and I have now worked it free with oil and finesse. 478 gripper asmbly is mounted reverse of your video so the two single gears are on the backside making it a little harder to see what is going on. 478 also has that needle brush you mentioned and uses a flathead screw instead of a bolt. After the gears came off, I realized one was cracked and the other was missing some teeth!!?? I have replacements arriving this week. I have been able to test various bits w/o the gears by manually rolling the motors but, I cannot do a logic board test. I see the 9.6 v led lit but nothing else works red and blue buttons on the board appear to do nothing.

Hey Ron, Thanks for a great set of videos. Your presentation style is perfect! I decided to attempt the cleaning of the gripper mech on my Rockola 484 as it was missing the occasional record and leaving it on the turntable. I ordered the pin punches and the (SAE) 20 wt oil. Basically after one day, a very sleepless night and the next day, I managed to get the gears back in the right place. The mech kept jamming and it caused the circuit breaker to kick in and it's a good job the CB was there otherwise I would have got through 20 fuses! When the thing jammed first of all, the basket (carousel) would not budge so I thought there could be all sorts of fuses or transistors or whatever broken and that I would never get it to work again. In spite of taking photos, I still did not take enough - as you would say, "take tons of pictures, people!!!" The cam on the back of the gears on the 484 is for the stylus brush. Happy to report the whole thing is working great now and the gripper sets and returns the record perfect every time. Thanks again. Now, to fix RED and TED'S eyes on my Road Show pinball!

Those eyes may end up being harder to fix, LOL lots of little parts! I'm going to do a funhouse one of these days :) I've found on the Rock Ola mechs the pin that you put in it if it's sticking out slightly on either side, will cause the piston to not be able to go in and it'll jam too. I had to file one down slightly once...

Great jukebox video! Thanks! I'm like the only vintage audio tech in St Louis, and I get calls for these and others. I fixed a 1945 bubbler last year, thought i was in over my head when I realized it had a Cobra arm retrofitted and a preamp problem... then multiple mechanical issues... but one thing at a time... if all I had to do was these things, life would be easy, but I'm doing Hammonds and Leslie's one day, guitar amps, then restoring sparkle-top Rhodes pianos, wurlitzer pianos... and nearly all of them carry lethal voltages... sheesh... only got shocked one time in all my years... but that was enough to make me realize that I never want that again! I got my first shock at age 3... with a fork in an outlet! I still remember that one too! Lol. The only time it happened professionally was in a church, working on their organ that was wired wrong from the previous guy... after which I began to speak in strange tongues, much to their shock! Love your videos. My Rockola is 1970. Turn it on and the platter moves only. Hit scan, and it makes a strange buzzing noise. Buzzing noise coming from wipers, I think. Can I get some advise? Do you think it may stem from the same mechanism that you cleaned in this video? Thank you for your help.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 жыл бұрын
You've got about a 80% chance the problem is the mech is gummed up like on this box. I'd try turning the knob on the end of the motor by hand and see if anything moves by doing that, if it's hard to do disassemble it like we did and it'll probalby get you going. You probably also need to clean the pcb that the wipers ride on so they conduct as they should.... the good news is these are very resilient boxes, don't buy any parts for it until you're positive the part is definitely dead, usually cleaning and oiling them will get the entire thing working again with NO PARTS. I see people buy new motors all the time, it never fixes them.

Thanks for such a great video! I have a Rockola 490-2 in excellent working order, but with just one problem. . .it won't load a record. Everything else is perfect, it scans, stops at the right number record, but just doesn't put it on. I've manually turned the motor by hand underneath, to get it to pick up and play, which it did, (I gave myself a sore finger!), and when the record has finished, it picks it up and puts it back really smoothly. So it the motor works in reverse, but has no power in forward. Do you think this could be a problem with the micro switches, or maybe the brushes in the gripper motor? It's such a shame as it's a great bit of kit. Regards from the UK :)
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the motor, like you said it works one way, the way they reverse the motor is they just reverse the polarity of the voltage so the motor is fine. When it gets to the record, there is a cam switch that allows the power to switch from the basket to the mechanism, if that's misadjusted it might do that. You need to find a copy of the manual, it describes what order everything works in from start to beginning, so you read through it until it says 'the arm stops over the correct record' blah blah blah and whatever it describes happens next must have an issue since it doesn't pick the record up. It may be a switch, or a relay in that box under the turntable may be dirty.

One more question when putting back together and you put the center shaft back in that the gear mounts to is it supposed to be able to fully free spin. Mine seems to get caught up cant spin 360 almost like the metal got warped or something if that makes sense?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
it should spin around but not if the gripper bar is in it of course. But yes there shouldn't be anything in it, as long as the gear isn't installed it should freespin. You may be able to place it on a table and roll it looking to see if it's warped, sometimes people would grab things and bend them by hand, or the motor may have even bent it trying to turn it while it was gummed up.

Thanks for the video, but I need help. I decided to follow the instructions from this video, because my 440 would grab the wrong record, or miss the record about 10% of the time. Now, after disassembling and cleaning the gripper arm and gears, it works only about 10% of the time. The gripper arm is not smooth as it operates; very jumpy. The record falls out almost every time. Since it does work, once in a while, I must have reassembled it correctly, but I don’t know how to fix this new problem. I used 3 in one 20 weight oil. Please help
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
There's different sequences as it moves, for instance it pulls the center piston in first to grab the record, then it starts lifting the record, then it turns it, etc. which area is it jerky in? if it's grabbing the wrong record out of the basket, the basket probably needs centered, there's an adjustment in the manual that shows how to get it to line up directly over the record when it grabs it. If this adjustment is wrong, sometimes when it hangs the record up the record will hit the side of the basket, those metal cage arms.
@markyounie3571
@markyounie3571 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, I took it apart again and reassembled it. It seems to be working better. I have discovered that the jumpiness is the gripper motor not connecting tight to the gear. The three bolt, which hold it are tight, but it still skips over some gears. The other issue is the 45s play slow. I ordered new grommets to replace the old ones.

im getting ready to do my 71 seeburg usc2 . I've been a lil intimidated about disassembling all the gummed up moving parts to clean since i've only worked on pins and vids. the mechs between manufacturer's should be a similar set-up. Correct??
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
Russell, to be honest they are completely different, not even close to similar. You would think they'd all be about the same, but they all had patents and sued each other.... so Seeburg made theirs not even close to the same. The big difference is the Rock Ola uses a basket and the records spin around, then the arm puts the record down on the turntable. Seeburg brilliantly made the records in a rack, and the turntable actually moves to the place in the rack that the record is, then plays the record standing straight up and down! The good news is all the Seeburgs were the same for 40 years, it was a nearly perfect design. There is a shaft inside the mech though that gets gummed up like the Rock Ola issue so yes the best way to get it going again is to disassemble the mech. I'd imagine there's some videos on youtube showing it, but unfortunately it is a bigger job than this. One of these days I'll do some Seeburgs and film how to do it if you haven't gotten around to it by then :)

The whole mechanism is smooth under my power, but I goofed up and put the end piece (part #20) on 180deg out of order and it wouldn't clear correctly. There is usually on most machines on one side or the other a bar attached to the door (the top)... and then it goes down into a plate with a hole in it on the side of the machine, the end of the bar has a little hook on it so it stays in place propping the lid up. that piece may be missing on yours...

It mainly happens when it try’s to move the record from the turntable back to its slot. Also I cleaned every record before putting them in the JB and just now the gripper dropped the record before it got to the turntable, when I removed the record it had “gunk” oily rust on it. 😳

He probably sprayed oil or wd-40 all over it to free it up, I used to do that too but just like it shows in this video, you need to clean all that stuff out or it will drop records when it tries to pick them up and put them back... If it's dropping them before it gets to the turntable it may just be a fluke with that one record being slightly smaller than the others or warped a little bit, or it may be that the basket needs adjusted slightly, it's picking them up slightly off center (the basket isn't centered under the bow when it gets to position)

How did you turn the motor in order to get the last gear off?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
There is a knob on the bottom of the motor that you can turn by hand to get it all to spin if it's not locked up too much. If it is locked up too much, you can take the motor off which disengages the gear and allows you to turn it all by hand too.

Joe's Classic Video Games i will try that later im working on my rock ola ultra but its reversed so its hard to see the gear since its what your doing but gear faces that back wall of juke box with not much room to see!

I know what you mean. I think they expected the operators to pop the whole mechanism out of the cabinet but that's a big pain...

The terms Grease oil and lube all means the same Thing right.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
Technically they're a little different but I'm using them all interchangeably... Grease is usually heavier 'weight' stuff that's a solid like Vaseline... oil is usually more light weight stuff like a liquid, and lube is used to describe any kind of lubricant
