We have also learned from the video for Everything Sucks that they always blow the money they are given to make a music video and end up having to make a cheap video. I love how they don't overboard on their videos. They keep it simple and hilarious!!!

Ironic how many people watch videos like this and miss the point entirely. The song is about how easy it is to continue the cycle of abuse if you’ve been treated roughly. That line is what’s meant to illustrate how his worldview is wrong because it illustrates how his toxic views lead to him slowly succumbing to hate and becoming the romantic partner that he hated.

The song never once hints towards abuse, it just talks about how he's hardened his heart due to past relationships and so is being emotionally distant towards her with the expectation that she will also try to break his heart. That's why he, "dares" her to break his heart, he thinks he's learned how to defend himself from such things.

Is if you're not doing the hurting, You're the one who's getting hurt. and this part is where the facade collapses and it becomes obvious that this isn't about protecting himself anymore, it's about proving his philosophy correct by pushing her away by hurting her to stop her from hurting him. after this part the music cuts away and he starts to sound lonelier and lonelier as he has pushed everyone else away and hurt the ones he loves in an attempt to prevent himself from being hurt.
