In the Bottom Dollar Bounties DLC Rockstar changed the class of the Impaler SZ from Sedans to Muscle. The first time they've changed the class of an existing car for 11 years. And I'm left wondering why. Why this car in particular? And why haven't they done this before?

Seems like some of the early comments are missing my point so I'll write this to get ahead of it. The question at hand isn't exactly why they changed the class of this car. Maybe it was to make it wheelie (though they didn't have to change the class to make that happen), maybe they just thought it fit better in muscle, whatever - the actual reason doesn't matter. My point here is that any reason for this change pales in comparison to the hundreds of better reasons to change the classes of other cars over the last 10 years. The question is why did this one get that treatment when the others didn't?

I think the Moonbeam is Rockstar's version of the "Lil' Red Express" / "Midnight Express" variants of Dodge's D series trucks from 1978/79... That truck left even the Corvette of that time in the dust.

I knew from the very beginning that GTA V's car classes never made sense. I remember one of the first things I did when the game was new was taking a Manana to an LS Customs to modify it. I recall thinking how strange it was for such a car to be listed in the sports classics class, as it's not exactly a car one would call "sporty." This is true of all the slower cars in that class as well as the slower cars in the muscle class. Really, such vehicles deserve a class all their own, which I seem to remember them actually having for online races in GTA IV. I think it was called the vintage class or something along those lines, which included vehicles like the Manana, Peyote, Voodoo, etc. They really should've had a class like that in GTA V, which would also include vehicles like the Tornado, Roosevelt, Chino, Broadway, Eudora, Dynasty, etc. Maybe even some of the older, slower vehicles in the sedans class like the Emperor and Regina.

I would honestly love a rant/list of all the potential class misallocations over the years, alongside how they would perhaps benefit a different class by adding to a certain tier, I know you’ve brought it up through various fully upgraded cars series videos in the past but a compilation of sorts would make for good viewing imo

It was because before the impaler SZ before this update could not wheelie despite it having loads of drag racing modifications like wheelie bars etc.. I don’t get why they didn’t just leave it in sedans and make it able to wheelie but I guess they decided that it was better to change it to a muscle class to allow it to wheelie.

But my point isn't exactly the reason they changed this - it's that any reason for this change pales in comparison to the hundreds of better reasons to change the classes of other cars. I have two theories, first is that this was a change they pulled from upstream GTA 6. There could be several new vehicles that would be introduced with GTA 6, and someone was reworking the classes, they would only pull in changes that are relevant to GTA 5. My second theory is, that the developers/teams who originally created a bulk of the vehicles have since moved on and there are new people working on, these updates and the new devs aren't going to modify any of the historical models/categories, but maybe they're willing to adjust some of the things that they are working on/created. Maybe the SZ supposed to be in the muscles class all along, but someone made a mistake, probably copying and pasting something, and because they were the ones who created it they felt comfortable changing it. I know from my work, I feel comfortable changing things that I created, but I am hesitant to modify something that someone else initially created or something that is extremely old. Hopefully this is a good sign that they are thinking about it and they are making a concerted effort to get the classes right in 6.

I can't help but be extremely pessimistic about GTA6. Maybe if you subscribe to GTA+++++ you'll be allowed to run cars in different classes to what they have assigned.

From the start, I was expecting it would be made a muscle car based on the fact the 96 Impala SS was made a muscle car in Midnight Club 3.

It might take some more significant code changing, but surely they could change from a single field (Sport, Sedan, or Classic) and replace with tags (Sport + Sedan + Classic). Allowing cars to race in multiple classes and be accurately described.

The only reason I can see why they changed the car class, is because it has a drag-racing parachute at the back, therefore it should have the ability to pull a wheelie. Still, it is weird why they only changed this one.

100%... Coupes class is full of sedans and the Impaler SZ was a better sedan than muscle car.

Some theories: 1) It's a test and they'll do others later. 2) It's an accidental change. 3) It's going to be in GTA6 and the GTA6 dev team wanted it in muscles for some very specific reason e.g. a player character owns this car and it needs to be in muscles so that it's raceable in some muscles race they are building into the story. 4) Someone reported it as a bug and the bug report just happened to get handled by someone who thought it made sense to change it. Other bug reports (if there have been any) about other cars got handled by people who didn't feel like changing the classes. 5) Some inside joke; like a dev owns this car in real life and claims it's a muscle car. His buddies laugh at him, so he moved the in-game version into muscles to prove he's right.

This reminded me of a comment someone made a long time ago, I believe in one of your videos, on how doing these kinds of changes is very complicated when it comes to integrating that in the workflow of development and some other corporate BS I can't exactly recall. Then this happens. Rockstar just doesn't have anything better to do now I guess, they just randomly mess the game up for fun to see people's reaction.

@@broughy1322 I fully understand that, I'm just saying that at this point Rockstar's decision making for GTA 5 has become absolutely hilariously bad, with lack of simple logic seemingly the main component of it. So maybe the reason for it is just... because they are Rockstar and this seemed to be a logical step? For them, obviously. It's why any question about this game that starts with 'why' should be answered with 'because Rockstar' because the real answer (should there be one) will only raise more questions...

This whole time they could have fixed the classes, they even proved it to us leaving no questions about how possible it would be. My guess is the Impaler SZ in real life is kinda muscle car-ish. Irl the SZ is based off an early 90s Chevy Caprice and those have beef cake engines, V6s and V8s

The Impaler SZ is based on the Impala SS. The only thing it has from the Caprice is the chrome trim. In real life it's the sportier version of the Caprice with a Corvette engine.

My baseless speculation: Some slightly higher-up person in Rockstar once decided "We're not going to change classes of cars that have already been released, that's just going to confuse players" or something. Then 10 years later some new guy works on car data either and changes it without knowing you're not supposed to do it (or even just accidentally while they're supposed to be working on a different car). Turns out either nobody notices or nobody really cares after all and it ends up going live.

the only reason i can think of is because this generation of impalas is the last true ss impala you could buy and to not have it marked as a muscle car hurts as a chevy guy(although i understand the argument of keeping it in sedans) at heart the ss impala is a muscle car small block ls with rwd it just so happens to be a 4 door the generation after this ruined the name with a fwd and a v6 with an ss badge so if they had the 2000s model that could be the sedans and the 90s model in muscle

I think your mistake here is to assume a greater purpose to this. From an outside perspective, it looks like GTAO is maintained by a skeleton crew with little supervision. In that sense, someone on the team decided to make this change on their own, with no fore or afterthought. They saw the car, they wanted it in muscle, they put it in muscle. I highly doubt any other thought crossed this one guy's mind in this process.

Reason why they did it is because the people who made this DLC, their brains are rooted. Both new HSW vehicles do not possess the additional suspension drop, when they should get it like all the rest, which is why I find the Turismo Classic to be the most fascinating amongst them all, seeing as tho it never had a suspension upgrade to begin with.

They’ve Also Made A “HUGE” Change To The Mechanic Feature . You No Longer Can Have Mechanics Spawn Bikes Or Tri-Cycle Like Before . . . . . They Also Simplified The Organization Of Your “Garages” When Calling Mechanic If You Have A Garage With Multiple Floors , They’re Inside A Folder And You Have To Open That Folder . For Example , Night Club Has 2-4 Floors For Cars , You Have To Go To Night Club Folder , Then Go To The Floor You Want . This Makes Finding Cars Somewhat Harder Because You Have To Remember “Where” It Is And Remember “What” Floor Its On .

Lets begin with the fact that the whole class system in the game makes very little sense just bc people who created it are absolutely clueless about the terminology they're using. There are important classes, that are missing, like the Pick-up Truck class or the Cruiser Class for older american non-sports cars like the Virgo. Instead they shove cars like Virgo into the Muscle car Class, which is a dump site for miscellenious american cars. Doesn't matter, if they have nothing to do with performance. Instead there should be a Classic Sedan class, because by definition every cruiser or a personal luxury "coupe" is a sedan indeed, bc it features a 3-box design. A Classic Muscle shoud be there too, bc to actual muscle car would compete against a modern muscle car. A rally class is also badly needed, bc there is a respective class of vehicles in the game already. There is just one motorcycle class, no division between racing bikes, enduro bikes, you name it. There is one redundant class in this game, which is the Coupe class. It they had put cars into classes according to their definition, the Mamba would be in coupe, the Ruston would be in Coupe, and everything with a second row of seats - wouldn't. The Tuner Class... ahh makes no sense as well. The definition of this class in the game is cars from the repsective update. A class of random sports class indeed. Why and how am I not able to use the Jester Classic and the Elegy Retro Custom in tuner races, which are the most iconic tuner cars in real life? But a 1969 Ford Mustang? There you go. An underpowered japanese compact utiliy truck? There you go. Pick it and lose ever race

The Euros X32 should be available in sports as well as coupes, I want to race it against all the other JDM. What we really need is an open class that allows the race creator to add vehicles from multiple different classes but also the ability to leave it completely open to all classes.

My best guess would be Rockstar received enough tickets/complaints from players about this car not being available for muscle class stunt races that they decided to make the change. For various reasons, most people (likely more casual players) who bought this car probably already expected it to be a muscle car, and were disappointed when they couldn't select it for various Rockstar-created races locked to specific classes if they decided to quick join a few casual stunt races or something along those lines. I can't imagine much additional potential justification either beyond that

My best guess is this change was made very late in the update before release, and car was chosen randomly as the first car to be changed, to see how the game reacts to said change and what issues arise from doing so. I'm guessing they were weary of changing several cars at once and potentially breaking an already very fragile game, as right now the Online is only held together by glue and toothpicks.

I understand they probably did it because the Impaler SZ could be good at wheelies but it's the one car they decide to change. If they wanted it to wheelie, they should have given it the treatment of the Weevil where it's not in Muscles but it can still wheelie. If anything the Impaler SZ was most likely nerfed from being an A-Tier car in Sedans to probably a B-Tier car in Muscles despite looking more like an old school sedan. I am actually interested in seeing all the vehicle misallocations because after doing it with the Impaler SZ, it means they can change a vehicle class and I think they definitely should but if there are some cars that can be competitive in 2 classes (like the HSW Stirling GT in both Sports and Sports Classics), then I get that but still there are tons of cars that can be more competitive in a different class.

I'm a game developer, but disclaimer: I'm not familiar with Rockstar's processes I think such class adjustments were never made because a lot can go wrong (player saves, recorded lap times, etc.) So when vehicles ended up in the wrong class it wasn’t labeled as a bug, but a feature GTA Online (GTA5) is approaching its end... It's conceivable that now, they might become bolder with such changes, perhaps to test things in a live environment. Even though everything will look new in GTA6, R* will likely rely on the existing systems as much as possible, just improved

I imagine the actual real reason for it was whoever put it in Sedans at first didn't actually know what a Chevy Impala was, and there was a bug report made by someone that actually knows what cars are what. An internal bug report, mind. Noone reads the actual bug reports and tickets that customers make. That's crazy talk.

Plenty of strange decisions made with this update. Ghilliemaster had a rant video earlier over the "buff" that the Bombushka was given. The guns still don't shoot where you aim, and it can only take one more rocket before it's destroyed. My friends are also having a similar rant with the clothing glitches since the telescope method to combine glasses/masks/helmets and the like has also been patched.

There's two things at this moment that rockstar need to do 1. Put ur screws back in the head with these crazy choices with the vehicle allocation. 2. Redo the vehicle class system and put the cars in the right vehicle class. They had more than 10 years to put things right and it is both annoying and laughable when this happens

And just another thing, most chevys from the late 90s are in a odd place due to the sedan look but having a muscle car heart

This reminds me of being confused a while back because the tornado rat rod was a Sports Classic and couldn't wheelie when they had recently added the ability to wheelie and then they gave it the ability to do so and thought they changed it to muscle. Was just wondering why they didn't just change it to Muscle.

So they can change classes but the moonbeam is still a muscle and the blista COMPACT isnt a COMPACT.

Rockstar blacklisted the festival bus. It’s a Pegasus vehicle yes but it’s a whitelisted vehicle and usually everyone has a festival bus, but rockstar decided to blacklist just the bus. They didn’t blacklist the MTL Dune or the Bunker Caddy, they just blacklisted the bus, and everyone’s bus is gone.

Something that makes this change all the more confusing is the fact that this car, being based on a 90's Impala irl, is around the year model where the Impala kinda stopped being a beefy muscle car like it's predecessors and became a somewhat generic family vehicle, making the sedans class more fitting than the muscle. I just.. huh??

The Impala SS had the same engine that the Corvette C4 had, that's why, it doens't fit sedans at all.

My guess: They could not change the classes properly before, and Rockstar decided to test it with random new car that nobody would mind too much if it got broken. Especially since the car fits both classes, so they could just left it stuck in both classes if something went wrong. Otherwise there would be no sense. Must be just a test thing.

its quite easy to change, literally just one line of code, and they did it before when releasing GTA Online, they changed the Prairie from Coupe to Compacts

I'm not mad at the class change but they should've fixed the modifications so we can add dual exhaust pipes instead of the single pipe in the back
