We’re in Canada in the province of Manitoba on the southwest shore of Hudson Bay where the Churchill River empties into the bay. The town of Churchill is so remote there’s no road that will get us there. Our only way in is by plane. Churchill is a crossroads of Arctic tundra forest in the Hudson Bay which is almost half a million square miles of Arctic Ocean pushing into the heart of Canada. It’s also a crossroads for two of the world’s most fascinating and rarely seen animals: Polar Bears and Beluga Whales.
This is coastal Tundra, there’s only a thin layer of soil over the permafrost - the permanently frozen ground beneath. That’s why trees and shrubs are scarce and small and only the toughest kinds of plants can survive the trails. We’ve never been so close to the impact of the Earth’s changing climate. The far north is where change is happening the fastest and it’s affecting almost everything we’ve seen. The melting ice on Hudson Bay is making it harder for polar bears to go out and hunt seals and it’s making it harder for beluga whales to escape orcas. The ground under the walls of Prince of Wales fort is softening and giving way because the permafrost is thawing.

This is cool! You know, on the subject of bear protection (spray, firearms, etc), I think bear-spray is a good first-defense, but only if it’s in someone’s HAND, like as they’re walking, hiking, traveling or whatever they’re doing. It’s useless if someone says “oh; I have bear spray,” but it’s in their backpack. Lol. If an attack happens, good luck reacting quickly enough… I say have it in-hand. Make sure it’s small enough to not be a nuisance. I live in a major southern California city and I still carry mace, air freshener, rubbing alcohol or even AXE body spray in a small bottle when I walk around the city! Stray dogs, crazy people… never had to use it though. I recommend my sisters and females to also carry something-in their hand!! Not in the bag!

I know you guys mean well, but why bother the birds? It stresses them as they try to defend their nests.

What kind of fish are in the Churchill River? Salmon run?
@RockTheParkOfficial
@RockTheParkOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
While the Churchill River hosts an array of fish (whitefish, walleye, lake trout, pike, yellow perch, cisco and numerous sucker species), the northern pike and walleye are the top drawing cards for anglers. The rapids and back eddies are a haven for walleye
