Uno dei vantaggi di non esser più giovani è anche l'aver avuto la possibilità di vedere in teatro questo unico, parafrasando una vecchia canzone "yesterday and today he is the ONE!"

My father always said he respected Maestro Rockwell. And I also respect him. I am unhappy that I did not learn his vocal technique directly.

I have listened to male voices for 50 years. Tenors have most taken my attention as their seem to be no definitive stamp to characterize "This" as tenor and "This" not quite what one means ( said with a touch of disapproving sniff). I was taken with Rocky the first time I heard him....as was I Corelli, Bruce Ford, Lauritz Melchior, Leveshev, Pavarotti (duh), Bjorling, Wunderlich, James King. There are others I've grown to appreciate over time and Russell Oberlin who is in a class by himself. If reincarnation was to bless my vocal chords one mystic night, I think I'd opt for Wunderlich.....Why so, I wonder? Versatility! No one on my list can do what Rocky can and yet, I think I'd shy from him in German lieder or Neapolitan folk songs ( not the Wunderlich did many either), but I think truly one must be "born" to Rossini as the text is ridiculously difficult. And, yet Rossini decried the ornaments of castrati as getting absurdly out of hand. I would think that many Rossini operas are limited in the regularity of performance as their just seem so few tenors who can handle the arias AS WRITTEN. What was Rossini up to? That's not a rhetorical question. Anyone with an answer I'd be pleased to hear it.

I definitely see what you mean. It does seem hypocritical that Rossini disliked the style of the castrati, then turned about to write some of the most heavily ornamented/embellished music of all time.

i think of all the great rossini tenors of that period, bruce ford had the sweetest and most beautiful tone, compared to the more idiosyncratic voices like blake and kunde. but we were very lucky to have them all at the time, and merritt too. today we have spyres and romanovsky, and other young talents coming up.

I think Blake and Merritt are radically different from all other singers. I don't mean they're better, but the only good ones.
