This video shows the Collins MP1 mobile power supply, and how to restore it. The MP1 was sold by Collins Radio Co. from early 1960s to late 1970s. It allows the user to operate the tube-based Collins KWM2(a) and KWM1 transceivers mobile from a car battery. Most of these MP1s are not usable any more after more than 60 years due to deteriorating electrolytic capacitors which leakage often also corrode the PC board. We therefore have developed a drop-in upgrade kit replacing the old PC board and the old and hard-to-find germanium transistors. This kit will restore your MP1 to better than new, using modern high-rel capacitors, MOSFETs and a microprocessor for soft-starting the MP1 at power-up. The efficiency of your MP1 will go up with more than 10%, resulting in less heat dissipation and less current consumption from the DC power supply. In fact, the MP1 will work so much better after this upgrade that you will want to use the MP1 as your primary power supply for desk-top use of your Collins radio as well, instead of the large 516F-2 supply.
