I have the same radio restored it and it is the best radio I've ever owned, also the mobile cp-300 with matching power supply. I have a second cpi cp-2000 in the process of being restored just waiting on capacitors the axials are getting harder to find.

Very high power for that period compared to small car devices with barely 2 W and poor modulation. High sensitivity. Excellent CB radio. Real.

Great video. I would have liked to a see CW demo but still a fantastic demo. I believe this was the transmitter in the bombers paired with the BC-348 I. The early part of the war and eventually replaced with the ART-13. I have a BC-348-R. It’s a single conversion with 2 RF staged before the mixer and 3 IF stages after the mixer at a freq of 915 for the IF. The CW key used in the bombers with this transmitter was the J-5-A flame proof and I have one in absolute mint condition. 73!!

On the board that contains the "less used" controls, the ones underneath the hatch on the top. See here and look at photo 3, you can clearly see the coin cell there (soldered): www.ebay.com/itm/196421016962

The little link wire is called a Dogbone. It would be great if I could chat with you about this as I may have spares and assist you. :) Great video mate.. So I take it you don't have your Radio transmit HAM licence yet as you are using dummy loads. Also may I ask where did you get it from? You do have a nice set up. :)

That is correct for antennas that are resonant. When an antenna is not resonant (which is almost always the case for this transmitter in an aircraft having a trailing wire antenna), there can be a large component of current that does not take part in delivering actual radiated power ("out of phase" current, also called "bad SWR"). This is the part of the RF current that the built-in antenna tuner needs to cancel out. But the RF ammeter cannot distinguish between such resonant currents and "blind" currents, and will therefore show a large current going into the (non-resonant) antenna depending on the impedance of the antenna (which on it's turn is frequency dependent). Think of it as the power factor that applies to the AC grid. An inductive load (or capacitive load) will show a large current going in that does actually not dissipate any power in the load. That translates to a power factor of 0, and won't make your outside kWh meter move. A purely resistive load (like an incandescent light bulb) will exhibit a current going in that DOES deliver actual dissipated power, and the power company will charge you for that one. That is a power factor of 1. Anything in between (like an AC motor) will be a load that is partially resistive in combination with a partial inductive (or capacitive) load. It is the same for the antenna that forms the load for this transmitter, but then at a much higher frequencies than 60 Hz. But the concept remains the same.

Interesting - I used to have an Icom R-9000 HF receiver, and that had a very similar look - it had less controls on the left side, but the CRT and the stuff on the right was pretty much identical. I wonder how much of the same platform the units shared.

228 / 5,000 Yes, that's right, the manual explains it (you can download the SL20 manual from the web). It is one of those small jumpers encased in plastic, which they often used for computer hardware in the old days. If the jumper is removed, the power supply is "softer". All you have to do then is adjust them all for the exact same voltage (without load), and when putting them in parallel. Use the same DC wire length for all 3 power supplies. then the current will distribute nicely across the SL20 supplies. 73s.

I remember when this radio came out. Back in the late '80s, when the FCC totally revamped the rules and created the novice voice class that allowed novice operation on a small segment of 10 meters. That's when I got my novice license, but I immediately got my technician license, bypassed 10 meters, and went straight to 2 meters. Radio Shack later came out with a 2 meter handheld, the HTX-202, but never had a 2 meter mobile.

@@LifeIsTooShortForQRP I don't remember those. I bought a Kenwood mobile. Cost almost $400. In 1988. Now I have a Yaesu FT2900 in my car, that cost less than $150. But it's too complicated for me. I had to buy a USB cord and the software to even set it up. That Kenwood was so simple. I wish they still made radios like that, just cheaper. A radio should be a radio, not a computer.
@spaceflight1019

The caveats with this generation of radios, and I own a Yaesu FT-225RD, are these: No built-in CTCSS. If your local repeater is on tone squelch you're not going to be able to talk through it. No memory channels. The radio is controlled by the VFO. No scanning feature. If you want to scan the band prepare to spin the big knob! Low power. Most of these put out only 10 watts, as it was common practice for them to be used with a linear. If you have no technical skills, don't buy one. After 40+ years they will require some attention and the OEMs and radio shops won't touch them due to the age. But if you can live with all that... you can get a very good price on them at hamfests. Happy hunting!

It highly depends on condition, serial number and installed options. A nice KWM380 in good cosmetic condition and no corrosion, but without any options and with serial number above 700 can be close to $3000. All options installed and good condition (like a HF-380 version) can go for more than $7000. A raggedy KWM380 with a serial number below 300 is probably more in the $1500 range. Hope this helps.

I was a radio operator (05b20) instructor in 1967-8 at Ford Huachuca, AZ. We had the GRC-19 on the bench for training until the summer of '68 when we got some mid 20 count GRC-106 sets to start teaching. I helped set up the lab but transferred out of instructor duty before it was complete. I thought his was was much better than the GRC-19 in my experience.

Communications Power Inc. was a subsidiary of the Gulf and Western Industries conglomerate during the 1960s and 1970s. Gulf and Western Industries, founded by Charles Bluhdorn, was a diversified conglomerate with interests in various industries, including entertainment, manufacturing, and commercial communications. CPI was part of Gulf and Western's portfolio during that period, a commercial grate 11 meter radio with components typically found in the commercial two-way radio world. That’s the reason many of the CPI radios today still perform well, 40+ years after they were made.

Ah yes, the old 40-channel Hy-Gains. I converted several to 10-meter FM back in the day. Forget the procedure for the band conversion, but I sourced the FM front-end kits from Bob Heil. Didn't know the 2SC2166 prices had risen above a dollar so I just checked eBay - the first 2166 I ran across was listed for $84. Good grief! You performed a good test for confirming authenticity of the replacement transistor, but shouldn't it be possible to compare the replacement using a transistor checker for equivalent values, especially the hfe?
