The dog Butkus in the movie I believe was Sylvester Stallone's real life dog during the filming of "Rocky". I read Stallone had to sell Butkus around 1975 (he had had him since 1969 at 6 months old) because he couldn't afford to take care of the dog. Once he got money for selling the"Rocky" script he was able to afford to buy Butkus back. I read that Stallone, before making it big, had promised his dog the he would be successful and someday Butkus would fly first class with him. Butkus died in 1981.

The only reason Rocky got the fight was it was Jan. of 1976 and they wee celebrating the USA's 200th Birthday for the whole year, so they couldn't cancel the fight, that is also why it was in Philly, the original capital of the USA. That is why Apollo was dressed as George Washington, also all of our quarters in 1976 were special edition quarters. So, Apollo Creed wasn't really a clown, it was just the year, and the story, he wrote this with 1776/1976 in mind.

Apollo's fanfare entrance honored 200th anniversary of American Independence (declared in Philadelphia). Fight happened on January 1, 1976. Pro boxers fight 3 or 4 times a year, and usually never in the same place in the same year. That was probably Apollo's only fight scheduled in Philadelphia that year. That's why his fanfare entrance was in January. Probably also fighting in Vegas or NYC Madison Square Garden that year, and the Declaration of Independence wasn't signed in either of those cities on July 4, 1776. Apollo may be a boxer, but in his heart he's a showman

As you said, there a ton of Rocky (or Rocky connected) sequels. This paved the way for Slys career and made him one of most famous action heroes of all time! The Rambo movies didn't hurt. Thanks for another fun time and you are a champion Ms. Murray!!!! (Enjoy that cookie!)

People keep calling this a love story. There is a love-story arc, but it still takes second place to the underdog drama. Rocky's struggles within himself.. angst, dreams, pride, self doubt, etc.. Great characters, beautiful gritty cinematography and one the best musical scores ever.

Great Rocky reaction. As you proved, you don't have to like Boxing to like Rocky. It is much more character study/romance than sports cliche movie. This movie was inspired by a true event of the time. Muhammad Ali did something very similar. Another piece of trivia. Stallone was broke, and was offered life changing money for an outright sale of the script, but refused and held out to star as well, taking a much smaller amount. The gift dog in the film was actually his dog. Another good Stallone film that is often misunderstood is First Blood (1982). Also more character study than the big dumb action movie it is often assumed to be. For unique action movies with depth, I think two that might be worthwhile for a reaction, if you haven't seen them are: John Wick (2014) The Matrix (1999)

Yes this is a love story. But I truly believe, it is a story about two good people finding each other. Both of them live in an awful environment, surrounded by not so good people, but in the end rise above it all and escape from the situation that their Both in. All the time, remaining the good people they àre.

(LOL) TBH, this was not my kinda movie either, when I was a kid...but over the years, even I have learned to Respect this Classic; I can even see now why so many (honestly) prefer Rocky over Rambo! Glad You noticed that He also Wrote this movie...Stallone Loves to Write as much as Act, but this was His Most Passionate Project to date; almost everything in it is based or inspired by his own real-life experiences...even that dog was really His too, before and after the making of this movie! This is also the only "Rocky" ever to Win the "Best Picture of the Year" Award! Btw, in addition to More Rocky Sequels, I have another Suggestion for You: "Real Steel" (2011). Yes, it is another Boxing movie, but instead of People fighting...this one has Robots!! Believe Me, it's a really Beautiful Story, and I know you'd Love it (so would Your Sister, if She ever gets around to it, LOL)!

'Split Decision' means it was a tie (according to the judges). That mean Apollo keeps the Champion title because he didn't lose.

Split decision does not mean a tie. It means that one of the three judges voted for the other fighter as the winner. Two judges voted for Apollo and One judge voted for Rocky. Apollo did win the fight. No tie. (But as close to a tie as you can get in boxing)

A split decision is a tie. In that case the advantage goes to the champion (in this case Apollo Creed), who is then declared the winner. I really love to see women react to this movie, to see their surprise when they realise that is actually a romance movie.

A split decision is NOT a tie. It means 2 of the official judges scored the fight say Apollo won and the 3rd said Rocky won thus the split decision goes to Apollo as the official winner. Each round is scored individually 10-9 to who was "better" in just that round (this is where subjectivity and corruption come into play), rounds with knockdowns typically being 10-8 (the knockdowns in Round 1 and 14 effectively negated each other) gives the fallen something they have to make up for somehow whether by knockdown, total beatdown in a round or drawing a major foul that the ref deducts a point (usually there should be warnings 1st beforehand for excessive holding, low blows or other illegal punches like the headbutt Rico did to Rocky at the start of the movie before the ref resorts to deducting the point). Then the totals are added up. This was back in the day when championship fights were 15 rounds (12 now) so draws were less common as typically someone won 8 rounds so the other won 7. With an even number of rounds now, 6 to 6 is easily attainable but if 2 judges say draw and the 3rd said someone won it's officially ruled a draw (though the one who had the 1 judge win would have his bragging rights to the inevitable rematch).

@@TaraTunesIn Sorry but Rocky did lose. Can hear announcer clearly say a split decision, not a split draw. Of 3 ringside judges, 2 of them scored Apollo as winning more rounds while 1 judge scored Rocky as winning more rounds. 2-1 for Apollo so Apollo won. Split draws much more frequent in fights with even number of rounds like today's fights with 12 round limits. Hope that helps
