In my experience, most people who have aged, as old as the granny shown in this movie, don't really change their ways, they have lived a whole life with a certain way of thinking, even if they feel they went wrong somewhere, they will never completely admit it or act on it, i have an 85 year old grandmother and she has done a lot of things to screw up the family relations, she still acts,, thinks and lives the same way

Exactly, there are still such families in india where they believe so hard in patriarchy or other conservative ideas so in the movie it was not at all exaggerated, we see it all the time, I don't see any mistakes it was a proper commercial family drama and romcom entertainment film. All the characters justified their roles. including the supporting actor/ gym trainer of Rocky😂 The crown goes to the dialogue writer of Ranveer Singh. Ranvir looked exactly like a Delhi guy. I would literally give ranveer and his dialogue writer an oscar😅 The dialogues were hilarious and the entire crowd in the theater was cheering and laughing. It was realistic to show that sometimes person's nature/personality can not change especially when they are so aged.

Exactly. I could careless about Bollywood movies but this one was decent. I didn’t care about the love stories, didn’t see any chemistry between Alia or Ranveer and Dharmwndra and Shabana. What I loved about the movie was how it went against “respecting elders” which majority of Indian elders automatically assume that they deserve respect. Respect is earned not given for free. Alia Bhatt’s scene with Ranveer’s father was chef’s kiss. If I were her I would’ve 🥊 him in his face. Anyway, majority of Indian elder people are toxic. I’m Indian American and I know how they are.

Indian grandmas can either be the sweetest, nicest or the meanest, vile, cunning, narcissists...there is no in between. Also it's so nice to see so many people accepting in the comments section that elders are not right everytime and how many people have suffered at the hands of egoistic elder patriarchs and matriarchs of their families. This whole thing in India about passing generational trauma in the name of family, love and values has been called out very well.

They are always the sweetest to their grandkids (most of them) but they can be so bitter to other people in their lives, sometimes due to their younger times. They cannot get over it and it just translates to them being bitter. And I think Jaya not having a change in the end is one of the most realistic take bollywood has taken. Granny not getting a redemption is actually the most realistic part of the movie and different from most bollywood movies. Because in real life if your grandmother treated your mother & sister like that for years, basically turned your Dad into a puppet, wasnt even affected by your grandfathers death, and tried to separate you from your gf/bf....would she really be welcome backed? She only sent a peace offering because she lost everything but even she said that she cant admit she was wrong and thats fine because people do not change overnight. Especially elder people have a really hard time changing their mindset that they grew up with.

I think this time Karan Johar became quite introspective of his his previous works, he could've easily shown Jaya getting redemption just like Big B got at the end of K3G, that would've been a perfect fairy tale ending, but reality often doesn't work what we see in movie endings, and Karan gave the ending a real touch and showed that misogyny can also happen from a woman's end, its really hard for older generation to accept their mistakes, it's not their fault, its bcoz of the society they've lived in,my own paternal grandmother was quite like Dhanlaxmi, she even once said to my mom that I admire the fact that girls are becoming liberal now, but at this age I don't think I'll be able to accept it, and it wasn't her fault , she was a daughter of a wealthy man, yet her dad only showed love to his sons , and daughters including my thakuma, was treated extremely badly, all good foods were given to the boys of the house, and if the daughters craved for good food, they were beaten, so who are we going to blame, they didn't show any backstory of Dhanlaxmi , but I'm sure if they had they would've showed the discrimination she faced, misogyny didn't arise in one day it's been for generations , and a single individual cannot be blamed for the entire toxic society, but yesss it's high time now to get such toxicity eradicate completely from our society, maybe we wont be able to fully change our previous generation's thoughts, but we should make sure that we don't nurture that and pass it on to our next generations.

Yes, there were many painful memories and fractures in our relationship, but that's just the way it was. Although I used to be furious about everything at one point, I no longer harbor any resentment towards her. She was simply true to herself and never meant to harm anyone intentionally. Most grandmothers are little girls who were denied all rights and freedom, who faced gender based discrimination at home, were married off to strangers, became mothers when they probably weren't ready mentally and emotionally. Most grandmothers have stories buried in their heart that we as a society don't have the heart to hear. Their toxicity is the result of the poison they've been silently swallowing all their lives. This is a very beautiful movie. It gives so many emotions. One of the best performances of ranveer singh. Three legendary actors Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra Sir. And Jaya ji were so well casted in the movie and they performed extremely well. Shoutout to Karan as well that he gave atleast one Scene to every actor to show their talent. Music by Pritam was good as well, he had included the classic hindi songs in this movie giving tribute to those musicians. Costumes and locations were beautiful as well. Only two problems I felt was the ending with Jaya ji's character and on the nose social messaging. Dharmendra Sir now is suffering from the same health issues which are showed in the movie for his character. An 88 year old living legend showed us why he is among the greats of the world cinema. Fun fact in early 70s he was regarded as the most handsome man in the world and was known as Heman Of Bollywood. He received World Ironman award as well. If you guys can react to two of his modern movies Life In A Metro and Yamla Pagla Deewana it will be your tribute to Dharmendra sir. It's my request, if you can make it possible will be great. It's a weird way of giving Rani her most precious possession - the recipe on which she built an empire. Remember, for her - it was even more important than her husband. By giving it to Rani, who has no use for it from a commercial standpoint - but rather, at most will make it for her family and friends... she is saying that she wants her legacy to be one of keeping the family happy even though she herself has made her choices in life.

Even if they've sufferred their entire life and know it's wrong, they won't admit and not change. I would've been satisfied even without the letter scene to be honest. Grandma's can be utterly angelic with their grandchildren but treat their daughter/son in law like pure garbage. This is exactly what I was thinking! Grandma's redemption. I feel that the letter from Jaya Bachchan should have explained why she became a person like that. Maybe she could say that right away in 1978 she found out that her husband was cheating on her, and from that point, she lost her love for her husband and raised the son away from the father, that would have been justifiable. She saved her marriage and was just performing her duty as a wife, mother, and businesswoman, but in the process became the person she is today!
@seemonjena659 Жыл бұрын
Actually it's obvious! The way Tijori and Dhanlakshmi reacted when Jamini came to their house and met Kanwal for the first time (the fear and disgust in their eyes) clearly proved that Dhanlakshmi was well aware about Kanwal's affair! There are many many Indian families whose existence I can vouch for where the elders never ever change no matter what. The redemption would have been an utter waste. Dhanlakshmi was such a stubborn character that showing that she had a 360° change in the end would have been forced.

Why does granny need a redemption arc? In real life a lot of people do not redeem themselves...especially the older generation. That was a very intentional choice by the director. But yes that character was very underwritten.
@poulamimukherjee4787 Жыл бұрын
I can see why so many people wanted a redemption for the grand mother, but in real life most old people do not accept the new ways. That’s why so many of us choose to separate ourselves from toxic relatives. Coz the redemption never really comes for most people.
@kaushiksunapu5657 Жыл бұрын
Granny did technically still have a redemption though, even the fact that she decided to recognise her ego and accept it, was enough in a realistic context...even just that doesn't happen alot of the time, in real life! Its just not meant to be perfect, thats a difference in this movie, because of which I liked it!

There were a lot of parallels of this movie with Crazy Rich Asians, especially the part where the characters Dhanlaxmi and Rani talk over making laddoos, it was a lot like the scene of the characters in Crazy Rich Asians where they talk to each other over making dumplings. I had say this is the Indian version but addressing issues in terms of Indian context.

You people just don't know what DHARMENDRA was and he still has it... he is versatile in real sense.. He ruled Bollywood in later 60- mid 80s..blur in later 80s.. Powerful in 90s and just supportive in 2000s and in 2020s, hands down 🙏

I feel this was the perfect ending coz not everything and everyone in our life will be happy with us or our decisions. Plus it’s really difficult for oldies to change their thinking at that age. That is why when we visit our grandparents here in India, we live and behave according to what they like or say. And ofcourse there are oldies who move with time like how Rani’s family is like. So this movie was a perfect showcase of different cultures and characters in everyone’s family where everyone could relate to atleast one member in this movie.

Dadi's redemption wouldn't really make much sense. It could've only happened in a movie, but I am happy they didn't chose to go with it. When you grow old with some sense of idealistic world in your head, you can't bear anyone making an attempt to change it. They would rarely ever be willing to adapt with the changing world, and others just sort of get used to them being like that

Ranvir Singh should be preserved at all costs. He is an actor par excellence. The only other actor who is as versatile as Ranvir is Rajkumar. I believe both RKs dont get enough credit in the industry.

I think that the grandmother was not entirely wrong. If you look from her perspective - she was ambitious and wanted things in her life but her husband was not competent (not the way she thought was need to achieve those dreams.). So, she had to step up, she took over the business and realistically speak when you have to build a business and grow it to the height she did - you need to be mentally strong, rough around the edges and have a discipline of doing things so as to make it work. I am not justifying her behaviour or saying what she did was right but she was not entirely wrong. She did change in the end because the people she loved told her she was wrong.

Parents don't change. In this one, they still do. With the idea of the granny's redemption, you're asking for too much from the desis 😅
