We live in Fresno where most days average 0.00" of rain during summer. No joke, that's why 100% of the U.S. raisins supply comes from here. We have used jackhammers to get through hard pan before. It really does eliminate a ton of work and swearing.

I need to keep the jackhammer to make it easier to plant more trees. I know of the Back to Eden method and it's great for creating soil but with soil this bad, the more trees, the better the soil will become because the roots penetrate horizontally and deeply and bring moisture up towards the surface. (See food forests) Tree roots are amazing, they can move through this hard soil. I have over 30 trees that are doing it well (eucalyptus, cottonwood, Cal. peppers, and more :) thx for the comment!

I need this! I basically live on solid flint rock! I have been trying to landscape my yard this year. shrubs, trees, flowers... and just to dig a little hole for a 1 gallon shrub takes FOREVER! I am 5'3" 110 lbs. not exactly a beast in the muscle department. i use a pick axe to dig the holes and I have basically made a retaining wall out of all the rocks I have pulled up out of my yard 😬
@groovesme11 жыл бұрын
WOW I needed that when I planted my grape vine! Although if your soil is that hard you probably want to dig out a larger hole.

Awsome! thanks for the demo. Im gonna get one as i'm planting over 100 photinia in solid clay ground. When the ground is so hard I really need half meter deep n wide holes to add quality soil and so the plant doesn't become root bound once it reaches the edge of the hole.

I'm glad I don't have to use a jack hammer! Men to the rescue lol but you should have known that as the name of the machine says it all. Thanks for your sub and enjoying your vids. Regards Glyn

Why would anyone down vote this? Working work clay soil is a pain!

Not the best looking soil.. They say tree mulch really helps to improve soil like that.. Is no quick fix & does take a few years though.. Our plumber lent me his small unit to dig a 2 foot trench for some power & water lines to go in... Was fun to use :)

Yes, we are very pleased with it for the price. It will get a lot of use around here :) thanks for watching!

good idea!... that looks like the nasty stuff we started with... at least we have a half way decent top layer now... but you go down any distance it is still like cement...

That's a hilarious, but brilliant idea! I wish I had a jackhammer.

That is so neat - I had been waiting for this update. I would never have enough thought of that (looking for a jack hammer). Would have been helpful when we were digging some BIG holes to put in fruit trees two years ago - perhaps next time :)

You should dig much bigger holes and then backfill with improved soil. Small holes like that are just going to lead to root bind in that hard of soil. I too have the same hardpan and have learned the hardway.
@smarteepants64316 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget drainage. A hole becomes a small pool and your plant will die. Check drainage by filling hole with water. See if it drains away in less than 3 minutes. Longer and you’ve got a problem

That's awesome! How does it do in an area with lots of roots?

Very nice "home use" jackhammer! Looks like it did a great job for you all and now you are set to plant your new trees. Good deal. I was wondering how it worked out, from way back when you bought it.

Well done, sad about all the negativity, probably unit dwellers? Yes even tradesmen use demo hammers digging trenches in hard or clay soil, and not all of us have the strength to dig out a swimming pool in 5 swings.

Hey, that's a good point! I'll have to tell him that digging more holes will actually help him, lol.
