Rocky knew from their last encounter how dangerous the clever Walcott could be. He didn't want to waste a single chance to get the knockout. Walcott tried to get up in time, but he seemed too dazed to process the count he was hearing. He disputed the loss and didn't plan on retiring right after this fight, but when he finally saw the film he changed his mind.

You can tell Walcott is MUCH more cautious the first round of this fight compared to his first meeting with Marciano. He got a taste of Marciano's punching power in their first fight and wasn't a fan of it. It still didn't do him any good.
@watchmanonthewall14
@watchmanonthewall14 2 жыл бұрын
After their first fight, Walcott came to realize that 1) Rocky could take all of his best punches, punches that had knocked out many fighters before that, 2) Rocky could put 15 rounds of non stop pressure on him, 3) Rocky's punches hurt, not just the one that KO'd him in the 13th round. Realizing all of that, he tried a different strategy of repeatedly engaging, then quickly tying up Rocky in order to try to neutralize him. When he got flashed knocked down in the first round, he was not severely hurt. But you could see it in his body language that many things were going through his mind in those seconds on the ground. He did not want to go through hell again, so he POSSIBLY purposely stayed down a half second too long and then through a fit, claiming that he beat the count. The rest is history. Peace.

Walcott should’ve at least got himself into a crouched position to stand up, rather than sit there on his ass until 8 then start to slowly get up. A fighter who wanted to carry on would never have sat there like that. I think he knew there was more pain coming all night long if he got up. Marciano, you can all have your own opinions, but he was strong as a bull, fit, and was looking every second of the fight to take your head off. You couldn’t stop the man. Well- 49 people couldn’t. He didn’t look much- that’s where people get it all wrong about Marciano. He didn’t look much, but he WAS much.

Fedor Emelienko has always reminded me of the Rock. He doesn't hold and undefeated record yes but his sheer tenacity to win against guys bigger stronger and in some instances clearly more technically skilled then he is just mirrors Rocky. Not to mention his complete lack of ego. Dude has always and will always be humble and caring to everyone especially the men he just destroyed in the cage. IMHO Rocky Marciano is the greatest Heavyweight fighter in Boxing history if not the greatest fighter period in boxing history and the same goes for Fedor in MMA.

He did not beat the count. When the referee said 9, Walcott hadn't even started to get up. He appeared to jump up in that split second however his left glove was still down as the referee reached 10. @Tucker Johnson It was Marciano's choice to not put on any weight cause he'd compromise that otherwordly stamina of his going into the late rounds. He could have been easily fighting at 200+ and I presume that for the first 6-7 rounds, a heavier Marciano would land considerably heavier punches, which would be a problem for any fighter regardless of weight. Who knocks you down or not is not a good predictor for other fights. Ali was never once dropped by Liston, Foreman, Shavers, Cleveland Williams, Ron Lyle but Henry Cooper rocked his soul. Likewise Marciano was knocked down, but not really hurt, by slick punchers and not the bigger dudes he fought. Tyson, would knock the monsters out of this world but he couldnt even hurt Hollyfield who was small for heavyweight himself. Hollyfield in turn was never once hurt by Lennox Lewis but was beaten by the light heavy Moorer. And Hollyfield, like all the 80s, 90s guys, was roided up to the gills. Can you imagine Marciano on as much steroids as these guys? Furthermore, the younger guys like Joshua fight 10 or 12 rounders instead of 15, which changes the game totally.

It was a clean hard punch and a true knockdown. No mystery. Marciano's right was crushing and that alone explains the result. That also explains why Joe was slow coming up. Yet he COULD have gone on, because Rocky's punch here was not equal to the famous 13th round punch.. Maybe Joe didn't want another Suzie Q. And who could blame him? How many of us would have undergone the lifetime of fighting Joe had? He was a good fighter and a fine and courageous man. The fact that he didn't get up quick enough just tells us he was also an intelligent man.

There were no younger guys to take the place of the guys Marciano beat. Even Louis was on a 7 fight win streak--all within a year of fighting Marciano--and only a few years removed from being champion. He wasn't at his best, but there were no young guns Marciano ducked to fight Louis, Moore, Charles, Lastarza and Walcott instead. And it should be noted that he was the first HW champion to score most of his big wins over black fighters...even Johnson and Louis didn't do that
@Pedro_Le_Chef

Louis was on an 8 fight win streak against very weak opposition that he failed to knockout. Only two out of the eight were ranked and it was painfully obvious Louis's reflexes, speed and power were gone. "Only a few years removed from being a champion". Louis won the championship a *full 15 years before the Rocky fight* That's the way you need to contextualize this. To put it into perspective, Rocky's entire career lasted 7 years. To say that Louis was past it would be a massive understatement. And I struggle to understand why more victories over black fighters matters on a boxers resume.

The Referee pounced on the count as soon as Rocky started towards a neutral corner. He started the count at 4:05 and finished at 4:13. So unless this footage is slightly sped up, it was indeed a 7 second count. Perhaps it WAS the memory of the first KO that made him hesitate, but sometimes a big punch to the head can make your blood pressure drop, and your hearing and sight goes muffled and fuzzy for a moment along with spaghetti legs. Walcott was probably counting to himself because he couldn't hear, and waiting for the black and static to clear and color to return to his eyes. That or perhaps he was looking to his corner for the green light to get up as Foreman did years later in Zaire.

Sonny was a brute with a long reach and good power but his chin was average which is not a good thing for a guy facing Marciano. Fights are about match ups. Marciano does not match up well vs Foreman, Ali is probably to fast for him Marciano would have Koed Louis even when Louis was young. IF we are talking prime vs prime this would be my top 6 or 7 list. Ali Marciano Louis Foreman Tyson Holmes Dempsey Liston

Right, styles do make fights and I truly understand that concept, but the fighters that gave Rocky trouble were slick master boxers such as Walcott, Charles and Moore(look at Moore's body shape against Rock's as compared to his body vs Floyd, it's a huge difference) with George's big wide open swings maybe Marciano could get underneath them, it's easier to punch up with power then downwith power. And if Foreman wasn't allowed to illegally push fighters back with both arms.. continued

What's your evidence??? How do you know Wolcott wasn't hurt? That's quite a statement to make with such certainty. And the ref was a player too? And this you know by the "Fast count"??? Ridiculous.
@MrMarco855
@MrMarco855 8 жыл бұрын
LazlosPlane It's a fact that many fights were fixed over the history of boxing. Everyone agrees with that, yet when someone thinks a particular fight was fixed, everyone says he's crazy. Do you agree that there have been fixed fights in boxing history? If so, which fights? You don't know, but you doubt someone that suggests a given fight may have been fixed. If you read my statement, I said I believe the fight was fixed. That's not the same as saying I know for sure it was fixed. Obviously I have no evidence,.....how could I have evidence 65 years after the fact? I can however, make an educated judgement based on what I see. I've seen hundreds of fights, and I can only recall 2 fights that ended with fast counts. This fight and another fight( that was definitely a fixed fight). That's what leads me to believe this fight may have been fixed. Why would a referee intentionally count too fast? It makes no sense, unless there was a crooked game being played. That's only one indication, not enough on it's own to think it was fixed. The fact that the fight ended in the 1st round is also an indicator. It's not impossible for any fight to end in one round, but these 2 guys just fought 13 rounds, taking each other's hard shots until marciano landed a hard right hand. In this fight, the first hard shot and Walcott crumbles? Then he looks okay, wide awake looking at the ref, he hears the count clearly but gets up a half second too late? Still not enough? The reaction by walcott after it was over was another indication. He didn't plead with the referee, neither did his trainer. Walcott walked away stomping his foot and hitting the ropes like a spoiled child, a very bad acting job. A pissed off fighter would react much differently, I've seen that numerous times. Add it all up and you have a fixed fight. I didn't say before and I'm not saying now that I have proof or that I'm 100% certain, and most people know that's the case. I'm offering a strong opinion and gave several reasons for thinking that. I could be wrong, I've been wrong before.

@studentofsweetscience That's fine and if that was his reason for the fast count it still doesn't contradict what I am saying. I never said that the Referee was at fault, but he does fit a 10 count into 7 seconds, and Walcott likely being unable to see or hear the Ref to verify the count was my point. Are you trying to argue that?
@aiyahuntacheimumbi236
@aiyahuntacheimumbi236 4 жыл бұрын
@studentofsweetscience Alright, so then the footage is either sped up slightly as I said in my original comment that it might be, the Ref was rushing to catch up to the time keeper as I mentioned in my response, or the time keeper was fast and the ref was trying to catch up which has and still does happen at times. I don't think that we are really disagreeing here.

The uppercut by Marciano was hard to see so it's hard to tell if it hit Joe hard,....................... or if it hit him at all.............Walcotts trainer didn't look very upset either, he was jawing with someone in the crowd. You would expect Walcott and his corner people to be arguing with the ref. By the way, the referee was definitely counting too fast. Did he do that to assist Walcott in making sure he didn't get up in time? Watch the referee counting; he counted to 10 in about 7 or 8 seconds in real time I believe.
