I just got back from Denver last night, most of the parks are closed but I still found happiness up on high in the mountains nearby. In fact I was in tears walking down, I looked at the white mountain tops, said my last goodbye and cried descending the hills. I felt a definite connection to Colorado and sang this song up there in the mountain I hiked. Thank you John, this song is pure beauty. Thank you forever.

My family has vacationed in Green Mountain Falls CO for 3 generations. On our drive there, my mom would always listen to this music, but this song was special. She would always save it.... We would exit the highway, drive through CO Springs, and then go up the pass (a road/highway with mountains on each side). As soon as we turned, the windows would roll down, this was when she would play this song! The air got cooler & cooler the farther we drove & the crispness & smell of pine flooded the car..... Such wonderful memories & it wouldn't have been the same without this song!! John Denver could turn the canvas of CO into poetry, and to put something as beautiful as CO into words seems impossible. God bless!

It's a peaceful memory, my sister and I both not even 10 at the time, we would lean on each other and fall asleep, and when i woke up with my sister still asleep, I could see the mountains through the windows, my dad silently driving through the valley with this song playing. Such a good song.

Anywhere else is just me being homesick for Idaho, even when I'm in the very town I grew up in. It just ain't home anymore, and, honestly, it never really was.

Fue una pena su muerte tan temprana pero dejó su obra perdurable I heard this song for the first time when I was 20 or 21 years old in the distant 70's, it captivated me, it's a story, today, living in this country I've had the good fortune of bringing it to me, to delight with its music, with its lyrics , is one of my favorite songs, I would say one of my favorites. Even with the age I still have, it makes me dream and see the majesty of the mountains of North America, of the beautiful nature of this country and of which I thank God for having known. John Denver was a poet, he was a lover of mountains, rivers, forests and animals. .It was a pity his death so early, but he left us his beautiful songs.

Had it not been for John Denver and this song, released in 1972, I would've NEVER picked up a Guitar and become the Musician I am today. I was 9 years old when this beautiful song first hit the AM RADIO Airwaves and I just happened to see him play on TV.....back when there were only 4 Channels. Your Network Stations and PBS......not to mention, YA HAD TO GET YOUR BUTT OFF THE FLOOR OR CHAIR TO CHANGE THE CHANNELS BY HAND!!!!! Man, life was hard way back in the 70's!!!...LOL... After seeing him on TV, it was all over with from there. Being the youngest of 3, the next oldest being 6 years older than me, played the Piano so I took her cheap, little Sears and Roebuck Acoustic Guitar and taught myself how to play by looking at the Chord Layouts above the Piano Staffs on the Sheetmusic!!! 46 years later and still goin' at it. It's really sad how we lost John and I am Greatful and Thankful I was able to see him live, " In The Round " at the old Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, TN. I may have been 13 or 14....I know it was before I was able to drive!! My Father had to drop me off then come back to get me. I'll never forget the vast number of Acoustic Guitars he had on the Stage, all Tuned to different Keys and back up Guitars just in case he broke a String. Too bad there is NO ONE making this MUSIC anymore. Full of life and love for this Country and our Majestic Beauty . R.I.P. John and THANK YOU for the GIFT of Music and the path you paved for me. My Musical Journey has been, in the immortal words of Mr. Denver.... " Far Out!! "

This is John Denver’s SIGNATURE SONG (1972). He started writing it during the Perseid Meteor Shower which happens every August. He was camping ⛺️ with friends at the tree line at Williams Lake near Windstar (Colorado) and, all of a sudden, there were shooting stars 💫, and he noticed “The shadow from the starlight”… thus the line from the iconic single. He explained : “I worked in the song - and the song worked on me - for a couple of weeks. I was working one day with Mike Taylor, an acoustic guitarist […]. Mike sat down and showed me this guitar lick and suddenly the whole thing came together. It was just what the piece needed. When I realized what I had - ANOTHER ANTHEM, maybe; a true expression of one’s self, maybe - we changed the sequencing of the album we’d just completed, and then we changed the album title [into ‘Rocky Mountain High’].” Here are some of the references in the lyrics : - “He was born in the summer of his 27th year” - John was 27 that summer. - “Coming home to a place he’d never been before” - He and his wife had just made Aspen their home. - “And he lost a friend but kept his memory” - A close friend of his had come to visit and was killed riding John’s motorcycle. - “Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more” - This referred to a debate about bringing the Olympics to Colorado. On “The John Denver Show”, he set the stage for “Rocky Mountain High” by introducing it with this very story : “You and I have just broken out of a huge stand of Douglas fir. The trees tower hundreds of feet above us. We’ve come out of the solemn, cathedral-like darkness of the trees, into the bright, early morning sunshine of a grassy slope. The grass is wet and soft with morning dew beneath our feet. The air is crisp, so crisp it sends little needles of joyful pain through the membranes of your nose. The air is so clear, it seems to purify your lungs. On both sides, above and beyond, stretch the awesome ROCKIES, their great, snow-capped peaks jutting out of the early morning mist. THIS IS LIVING. This is what man was created for : to live and work and continue what these mountains represent. THIS IS TRUE FREEDOM. Being part of nature and drawing from it, and returning back to it.” WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MIND❕ 💜⛰️💙🏔️💛 Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed will you remain, Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., a.k.a. John Denver (1943 - 1997)… 🌹

My home I miss sooooooooo much being on the east coast ppl have no idea the high, the beauty, the longing for nature that 14ners can bring to your soul! The peace with God skiing down a backbowl to see the entire Continental Divides beauty in front of you! It goes on and on! I miss this man so much! Thank you John for all the growing up years of my Aspen! Daddy’s ashes are scattered in the Roaring Fork… 😔❤️

Hit a snow storm going up to Tahoe in 1974 to ski with a friend of mine. Came out of it just as we drove by Pollock Pines and this song came on the radio. The mountains were stunningly gorgeous, glistening with snow.. Pulled the car over and just sat there looking and listening. Thank you Jack Davis. We have lost track of each other now but what a beautiful memory. I wish you well, Jack!

Sheer interest brought me here. I asked everyone under 90 about their favorite radio songs, and started collecting them. There’s music like this-classic forever-and some that should be buried forever. But someone somewhere loved it…

Took a Greyhound cross country from PA to California. Ended up homeless in Denver for you 2 weeks. Made it to Cali, but even though it was tough, it was a good time. This makes me remember the sunset over Denver on the 4th of July, when I was camped up in the mountains.

What a visionary! I saw him all over the country, but my favorite was when he would come to Tulsa to share a private concert with a couple of hundred of us that he would play for his grandmother who lived in Tulsa. He has a rich history in Oklahoma, one of the kindest entertainers I've ever known! We are all fortunate to have known him. Gone Too Soon!

Though it saddens me to leave Colorado and the Rocky mountains, I have to take care of my momma down in Texas. But doesn't mean I won't be back. Was blessed to live there for almost 4 years. It heath taking and gives me the serenity I needed. This song gets me every time 🥲♥️🏔

My favorite song by John Denver! I remember this song growing up in the seventies and it always touched me with the lyrics, the melody and the meaning behind it. The opening of the song he says, he was born in the Summer of his 27th year, which means he got born again and started a personal relationship with God. What awesome lyrics and scenery from the majestic Rocky Mountains.......truly God's country!

My mom is such a huge fan of John Denver, and we lived in Colorado for 10 years-in Boulder. When she leaves this world, her wish is to have her ashes spread on the great divide and have “Rocky Mountain High” playing as we do. Thank you for sharing!

After all these years. Decades. I never knew. I didn't know this song was about a man's new relationship with God. I love John Denver. . . . "He was born in the summer of his 27th year . . . "

Er, I believe John Denver means he found his spiritual home when he was 27. If you insist that he means 'reborn' in a religious sense, you spoil the song.

Er. I insist that he was born again.

Yes the character in the song was likely born again. All these years I had not properly grasped the lyrics. I used to think that instead of "Talk to God and listen to the casual reply" it was "but you got to listen to the casual reply". Other lyrics I was mistaken about. I decided to learn this song as it is perhaps in the top 10 of all time so that's how I got here.

"Rocky Mountain High" is primarily inspired by John Denver's move to Aspen, Colorado three years before its writing and his love for the state. The seventh stanza makes a reference to destruction of the mountains' beauty by commercial tourism. The song was considered a major piece of 1970s pop culture, and became a well-associated piece of Colorado history. The song briefly became controversial that year when the U.S. Federal Communications Commission was permitted by a legal ruling to censor music deemed to promote drug abuse. Numerous radio stations cautiously banned the song until Denver publicly explained that the "high" was his innocent description of the sense of peace he found in the Rockies. In 1985, Denver testified before Congress in the Parents Music Resource Center hearings about his experience: This was obviously done by people who had never seen or been to the Rocky Mountains, and also had never experienced the elation, celebration of life, or the joy in living that one feels when he observes something as wondrous as the Perseid meteor shower on a moonless, cloudless night, when there are so many stars that you have a shadow from the starlight, and you are out camping with your friends, your best friends, and introducing them to one of nature's most spectacular light shows for the first time.[3] From the "Rocky Mountain High" Wiki....

For me John is one of the great composers of the twentieth century. He was gifted as a tunesmith as well as a wordsmith .His voice had a great range and his songwriting demonstrated a Wordsworthian affinity with nature. He was an essential part of the soundscape of my teenage years. RIP John. I hope your spirit soars with the eagles of the Colorado rocky mountain high. tunesmith as well as a wordsmith
